A top trainer who can moonlight as a top professional boxer deserves to win every race at Cheltenham, imo.

I’d love to see Original and Calgary Bay jumping the last together.

Can you imagine those those giants trading blows up the hill – with I’msingingtheblues sandwiched between them?

Although the last 2 winners were already proven at 2 and a half miles its worth bearing in mind that the previous 8 Arkle winners, before those two, had never won at 20f or more before the Arkle, and many of those had tried 20f and flopped.
It is received wisdom that you need a horse that stays further than 2 miles to win the Arkle but in my view a close inspection of the winners would tend to suggest otherwise (over a number of years).
Having said all that, there isn’t the normal group of classy hurdlers in this years race and I have gone for Calgary Bay.

Calgary Bay jumps well, of that there is no doubt, but I can’t be the only one who has serious reservations about a 2-3l beating of Kicks For Free? I didn’t see the race as it was run, but the reports that followed suggested he had won in almost effortless fashion. Watching the replay was, I have to admit, rather disappointing given the build-up and I just don’t see how he can win an Arkle.

He’s another near market leader I’ll be happy to take on.

Kicks For Free is a very talented horse, but far from straight-forward.

I’d rather look 13L back to Tartak in third, who has run well in defeat against some good novice chasers this season and won very well last time out.

Calgary Bay also ran I’msingingtheblues close at Doncaster on his seasonal bow, despite the former (who was giving weight) having the fitness and experience advantage.

Paul Nicholls horse has since won a very competitive handicap.

Cheltenham and AP McCoy bring out the best in this horse and you just know he’s been prepared to the second by Hen and Terry. The fast pace will suit and the ground appears to be perfect for him.

I can’t have him for the Gold Cup either, GWILSON77, not with some of the chasing potential we have around at the moment.

I don’t think he’ll be quite strong enough (given his size) to see out the Gold Cup trip against battle-hardened pros next season. I think HK will bring him along slowly and target races between two and a half and three miles.

As an 8YO in 2011 (all being well) he’ll be the complete package.

My first Ante-post bet for next season is Calgary Bay at 33/1 to win the Gold cup and Equitrack disagrees with me, no change there then!

I’ve had an ew on Panjo Bere; he’s a soft ground horse who has beaten Calgary Bay in a time that compared favourably with Master Minded’s race; I didn’t see his last race but he’s generally a sound jumper.

I am already on Imsingingtheblues and Planet Of Sound. Now the rain looks like making soft going, the former is a bigger price than my wager. The Doncaster handicap win was on a soft surface and hopefully won’t be too much worse than that.

I’m actually growing more confident about Tatenen’s chances, though won’t be rushing to back him again at the currently prohibitive 4/1. I have, however, had a little each-way interest in

    Gauvain

at around 33/1 following his last gasp victory at Sandown. There’s a chance that race could have taken too much out of him, but he won effortlessly in soft ground at Lingfield and was travelling well when falling at Fontwell in early February. His jumping is a worry, but I’m hopeful that a reasonable pace will iron out any serious flaws.

Well I got Forpaddydeplasterer all wrong I didn’t think he was good enough to win an Arkle. Tell you what though you might as well back Master Minded now for next years Champion Chase because if this horse is the best two mile novice its gonna be another procession next year acts of god permitting.

Said for a while on here that i couldn’t have Tatenen, and it is the first thing i have got right all day.

I didn’t think Forpady would be good enough to win an Arkle though.
