Madison Du Berlais all the way now Denman is out the way. Carruthers will give him a run for his money but just won’t catch him!
It is great to see Taranis back on a racecourse. Let’s hope he gets round safely.
January 30, 2010 at 08:39 #272865Today’s meeting is looking doubtful (another inspection due at 10am ) but if it goes ahead, then Carruthers will take all the beating, in my opinion.

Thing is about Madison Du Berlais is he’s never ran well at Cheltenham but then again 2 of his runs were in the Gold Cup and the others were when he wasn’t in good form anyway.
It was suggested he was ridden for 2nd in the King George and it did look that way so he probably had an easier time of it than most.
I read somewhere they are thinking Gold Cup for Carruthers so this is a big day for him if he is going to have any chance of running/winning.
Should be a good race between the two if it goes ahead and surely if they have any chance in the big one they can take care of PN’s what…4th string 5th string?…..whatever he is.
January 30, 2010 at 09:47 #272884Fist, I believe Inchidaly Rock is Nicholls’ runner in the 4m Novice Chase! Completely agree about Carruthers though, think he’ll win with something in hand.

Madison De Berlais simply get left behind off the strong pace in the King George imo, but this isn’t Kempton, isn’t 3m, and isn’t ground bordering on good. I doubt Carruthers has the class to do the same in these very different circumstances.

Madison Du Berlais is very much at his best on flat and/or quick tracks – five of his last six victories have come at Newbury (twice), Kempton, Aintree and Warwick – so I don’t think a slog around Cheltenham is really going to suit. He’s undoubtedly the class horse in the race and, more than likely, in a different league to Carruthers in terms of natural ability, but conditions hugely favour his market rival and that should be enough to beat him.
Whether you’d want to back Carruthers at 2/1 is a different matter entirely, though with Madison Du Berlais unsuited by the ground, Nicholls’s horses running poorly and the other four well out of it, is it such a short price?
January 30, 2010 at 11:42 #272922Well I’ve backed Carruthers at 9/4 but I’ve had a bit on Joe Lively at Betfair SP. Very wary of CD winners at Cheltenham who revel in soft conditions. Badly out of form, but with the way this race has gone in recent years I don’t think it’d be a huge shock if he won.
January 30, 2010 at 14:09 #272964These type of events appear easy to assess, but they can throw up some ‘surprise’ winners.
Joe Lively, Ollie Magern, Knowhere – OTT. Forget ’em.
Taranis – off with injury for over two years. No chance.
Madison Du Berlais, Carruthers – yet to reproduce their best here. Good Luck.
Inchidaly Rock – unproven at this level. ?????.OK, a bit tongue in cheek, but I can’t be overly confident about any of these.
Madison Du Berlais has just two third-placed efforts from six starts at Prestbury Park and Carruthers has disappointed just twice in his career – both at this venue.
I think Madison is the best horse in the race, but Carruthers was travelling well in the RSA before an almighty blunder last season and, only seven, is open to plenty of improvement and this small field will suit.
I’m going to take a chance on Inchidaly Rock, who won over CD on his last start. Stays well (trainer has highlighted the four miler in March as a target). Could find things happening too quickly, but the conditions will make this a true stamina test.

Well, I told you this race can throw up a surprise winner.
Talented horse, but did anyone fancy it after over two years off the course?
January 30, 2010 at 14:59 #272985I don’t want to throw up any aftetime facts here but he has won his first race of the season in this country 4 years in a row, now 5!
