For years older residents of the village where I live have told me about how they used to have a point to point at the next village along; I’ve only just got round to looking this up and it looks as if it was quite famous; it was run by the Maynell [?] Hunt, the village is Aston on Trent….am now on a mission to find out about this little bit of history on my doorstep [how annoying that it is no more].
April 25, 2008 at 21:03 #159884My form books are a bit sketchy in this period I’m afraid Moehat. I do know that the Meynell Hunt was still running meetings at Aston-On-Trent in 1960.
They then joined the High Peak Harriers and had joint meetings at Flagg Moor in the mid 60s.
More recently they have joined up with the South Staffs and run meetings at Sandon and Weston Park.
In 1960 their meeting at Aston-On-Trent comprised of 6 races including The Leicestershire and Derbyshire Yeomanry Heavyweight (won by Kilticky ridden by Major A. Gilks from Lollypop ridden by J Inglesant – presumably a relative of Rupert Inglesant – and the Open race for the Osmaston Cup won by C Foulkes on Golden Galleon II.
I’ve gone back through my records and certainly the Meynell were racing at Aston On Trent as far back as the 1947 season. In that year Major Hanbury’s Hopscotch, ridden by his owner, came from the Grove Hunt to win the Osmaston Cup. In the race Mr M Naylor Leyland (a good racing name)’s Sir Percivale finished 2nd but was disqualified for missing a flag!
The secretary of the hunt lived at Osmaston so I guess it is quite near to the venue.
