Ok so the mares allowance was introduced in 83/84, I’m not sure but was it originally a 5lb allowance then increase to 7 later? Naturally in the last couple of weeks we have seen three mares win grade ones, vroom vroom mag, Annie Power and apples jade. My knowledge of horse racing is pretty recent so perhaps some of the longer established followers could let me know what other mares have won grade ones in receipt of a 7 pound mares allowance? I think feathard lady won the Christmas hurdle but was she getting 7 pounds?
May 3, 2016 at 17:23 #1244444When the mares’ allowance was introduced in 1983/84 it was set at 5lb. The beginning of the 2003/04 season saw the concession for mares increased to 7lb for pattern races, this 2lb extra being adopted for all jumps races in 2004/05.
As Feathard Lady won the Christmas Hurdle in 2005, I’m guessing with some confidence that she carried 11st as opposed to the 11st 7lb impost for non-distaff runners in the race. Off the top of my head I can’t think of any other mare to win a Grade 1 off a 7lb allowance, but I’m sure someone more knowledgeable than myself can come up with one or two.
May 3, 2016 at 19:11 #1244447Flakey Dove 1994 Champion Hurdle; wouldn’t she have received the allowance?
May 3, 2016 at 20:18 #1244449I’m not sure about this but mares might have received a 3lb allowance before the increase to 5lb in 1983/84.
twm – Asian Maze won the 2005 Sefton Novices’ Hurdle getting 7lb and the 2006 Aintree Hurdle also receiving 7lb. The mare also won the 2006 Champion Stayers’ Hurdle at Punchestown but she benefited by only 5lb in that contest. (I note the allowance for mares in that race, and almost certainly other G1s in Ireland, is now 7lb.)
huddipuddies – I would have thought that Flakey Dove received a 5lb sex allowance in 1994 (after the 1983/84 change but before the 2003/04 increase). However, the Sporting Life results page for the race gives Flakey Dove (and two other mares) 10st 12lb with the rest of the field carrying 11st 2lb.
I have no idea why Flakey Dove got just the 4lb.

The simple answer is that the Sporting Life results page is bollocks.
Flakey Dove carried 11st 9lb and the male horses carried 12 st in 1994’s Champion Hurdle.
Hardy Eustace was the first horse to carry the current weight of 11st 10lbs in 2004. I can’t recall it ever being 11st 2lbs, so the Sporting Life were barking up the wrong tree totally with their figures.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
October 12, 2016 at 15:43 #1266811Thankfully, it looks as if she will at least be trained as a Champion Hurdle contender.
October 12, 2016 at 23:39 #1266846Visually most impressive juvenile hurdler, but have to wait to see the strength of her generation
October 28, 2016 at 13:43 #1268980Just looking at the entries for the morgiana hurdle. She is entered, now I know its not a handicap but apples jade has been rated 154 and Ivanovich gorbatov is rated 153, can anyone here explain how that could possibly be the case? In a handicap with a mares allowance apples Jade would be carrying 6 pounds LESS than IG. Madness
October 28, 2016 at 15:20 #1268996No she would carry one pound more in a handicap as she would not receive the allowance. She will carry 7 pound less in the Grade 1 and 10 pound less than older geldings. I had similar feelings as regards Annie Power in the CH but others couldn’t see it.
October 28, 2016 at 17:03 #1269015Sorry my bad there. However what is the justification for having apples jade only one pound superior to IG?
November 4, 2016 at 14:02 #1270511Well I think we can see already that trainers make a difference. Mullins would not have ran apples jade today because she is clearly not fit, he also would not have run her in cheekpieces, Elliot has never been wonderful at getting the best from 2 mile hurdlers and if anyone thinks that moving the best horses away from the best trainer is somehow good for racing then I’d love to debate with them.
I said it at the time when the 150-160 rated Mullins horses move to Elliot he will turn them into nothing better than handicappers, getting them lower marks than their ability. That isn’t good for racing.
November 4, 2016 at 14:42 #1270517Gordon Elliot just said on ATR – “She wont be winning any champion hurdles I can tell you that.”
Also “She will be stepped up in trip.”
“She looked slow.”November 4, 2016 at 14:59 #1270519Yes, she did look slow, woeful in fact but unless there is a problem the question Elliott should be asking is why she has gone from looking exceptional to very ordinary in one run for his yard. She didn’t look slow when she quickened clear in the Triumph and she didn’t look slow in her subsequent runs.
I think coming up with an answer to that question first rather than what just looks like a knee-jerk reaction would have been a more appropriate response.
It might have been different had she been beaten by an established two miler but she has just lost to a horse who she was superior to last season.
If she were mine I would get Cooper back on board, wait for a little softer ground and give her another shot over two miles. When the dust settles hopefully that is what will happen.
November 4, 2016 at 16:06 #1270530You’d think the next race she’ll be entered for a step up in trip will be the hatton’s grace where you’d expect Faugheen or Annie Power to be starting off. Unless they want to keep her in lower grade till later in the season.

I would agree with your thoughts Stilvi, she is worth another chance, she is a lot better than she showed today.

I’d imagine it would be a soft touch next to get her head back infront

Maybe she has gone backwards but surely you don’t give up on what appeared a definite plan after one reverse? If it wasn’t a definite plan and they really thought she wanted a step up in trip I would question why Walsh wasn’t trying to stretch them out well before the straight.
