Have been watching quite a few of the recent AW races and have noticed more than the usual number of horses not running anywhere near their mark.
Are trainers being given incentives to run horses that are not at peak fitness?

I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysJanuary 22, 2023 at 13:48 #1631877Maybe the whole cost of living crisis has cut into the trainers profit margins, with the cost of feeding and caring for their horses increasing, thus causing them to do more plot jobs?
Could also argue the cost of living has effected the smaller owners more than the bigger ones, meaning they’re struggling to find an excuse as to how they can afford to keep a horse in training, so are more inclined now than ever to encourage their trainer(s) to do the old plot jobs – and it’s those smaller owners that are more likely to have horses racing on the AW.

Everyone knows racing is 100% straight at all levels and every horse that ever leaves the paddock is trying for its life.
But just in case it isn’t….

Incentives paid by who and at what level? Sending a horse to the races costs a minimum of about £300, even if the track is close to the stable. My last runner, at Wolverhampton on DEc 21st, involved an outlay of £650 over and above the normal training fees. The only ‘incentive’ was the prize money on offer.
As for Ben’s ‘plot jobs’ all I can suggest is that he buys himself a horse and tries to arrange a win on that basis. Sounds easy, just spend five grand running the horse down the field, so that it’s dropped a few pounds in the weights, then pile on and collect your winnings.
Unless of course there are three or four other runners in your chosen race with the same plan. Or your horse really isn’t as good as you thought.
But of course. we’re all at it – how else can losing punters explain their losses.

I think that to suggest any horse that didn’t appear to have been run on its merits in a race must automatically be the words of a pocket-talking losing punter is stretching credulity to its limits.
There are documented cases of trainers and jockeys getting “done” under the non-triers rule.
And these are just the cases that were actually spotted.
I’d disagree with those who say that racing has integrity issues from top to bottom.
But I’d also disagree with anyone who said racing has no integrity issues whatsoever.

January 22, 2023 at 15:51 #1631890And if Chezza was your trainer, Ben, the duo would have been warned off years ago!
“After the 1.40 at Sand Pit, the Stewards held an inquiry into the improved form of the winner Notoffayard, owned by Mr Ben Bernanke and trained by Che Zza, who had been beaten an aggregate of 179 lengths on his first three appearances at SPs of 50/1, 100/1 and 250/1 (all three BSP 1000) before winning this Class 6 Handicap by 25 lengths hard held at an SP of 8/15 at having opened at 33/1 in a place the night before. The explanation that the horse had ‘improved for the application of chocolate hob nobs’ was recorded.”

One day Rodney!
January 22, 2023 at 16:19 #1631893Some horses run badly because they aren’t very good, some run badly because they are having an off day, some run badly because connections are cheating.
The biggest bet I’ve ever had was on some all weather tripe on a horse that I was reliably informed would be trying somewhat harder than it had been previously. It certainly was.
I’m not sure anyone is suggesting that everyone is at it but it happens. If it costs a monkey or more to send a horse to a race for the sake of winning a couple of grand I can see why some are prepared to cheat.
January 22, 2023 at 18:46 #1631910I was not suggesting that there was any cheating as such going on, just that maybe some horses were not at peak fitness.
I do know that in the early days of Sunday racing such incentives were offered to entice trainers.

January 23, 2023 at 16:47 #1631960John & Thady took Emily Upjohn to run in a Class 5 at Wolverhampton on 23rd November 2021 for her maiden run and she won at 12/1 it was her soul outing as a 2yo. It really was an amazing, never to be repeated price as less than 10 months on she won the Fillies & Mares on Champions Day at Ascot.
So were punters thinking the Gosden’s were out to get a run into their filly and gain a little track experience for their budding star or was she there to win the race as they were also running Godolphin owned Aerospace who was Evens Favourite and could only finish 4th.
It’s all a game of chance from a punters point of view to weigh up what you see and try to second guess what you don’t see. To be honest that’s what I love about the game especially when it works out.
Horses have off days like us, the difference is they can’t put in a sick note and excuse themselves.
As Ground says above ‘it’s judging the risk’ and learning by what you have seen. Like our own Sporting Sam
it can pay some good dividends for future investments..
