With the recent retirements of Frankel and Black Caviar, can anyone tell me of any other horses that have gone through their careers unbeaten, even if that career was fairly brief?

Obviously thinking of something a touch more substantial than winning a 2yo maiden or NH Flat race then never being seen again!

Good one. Unbeaten in two and nominated as the worst post-war Derby winner by racing historian John Randall:

Sorry, it’s just occurred to me that the above post sounds as though I’m being sarcastic. Absolutely not the case.

Looking down that list of ‘worst winners’ Arthur Budgett’s other Derby winner Blakeney is also there which seems a bit harsh!

Zarkava was unbeaten in seven, including five Group 1 wins.

Other undefeated Derby winners that spring to mind are Golden Fleece and Lammtarra

    Of course!

She’s had two foals so far, a filly by Dalakhani in 2010 who we’ve yet to see and a colt by Sea The Stars (both Arc winning parents no less) in 2011 (so 2yo this season). Can’t find a name/trainer but here he is in younger days:

Picked up a great obituary for his legendary jockey Steve Donoghue from that. Printed in NZ’s Wellington Evening Post, March 1945:

A quick look at google brought me to this old beast

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kincsem

Bit before most of our times, except maybe Himself

Don’t forget the mighty Eclipse also. 18 straight I believe.

Zarkava was one my favourite unbeaten, we never saw her absolute best, she won every race with something hand! Gave Goldikova a pasting a couple of times with out breaking a sweat. She truly was a great horse.

    Wasn’t Zenyatta unbeaten… oh wait..

I know he only ran three times due to injury, but Guineas winner Footstepinthesand was unbeaten. We never found out how good he was.

Can add Teofilo to that list Admiral!

Dawn Approach and Certify are the most prominent pair of unbeaten 3yo horses at this stage, anyone expect either or both to go all way?

Probably not Certify I would have thought. Fillies are much less likely to train on from 2 to 3, and to remain unbeaten I would say, plus she’s with Godolphin. Maybe was a great 2yo but average 3yo filly.

I fondly remember a cracking hurdler named The Grey Bomber (early 80’s) who ran up an unbeaten run of five before a horrible accident ended his life.

    Ribot ( 16 – 16 ), Ormonde ( 16- 16 ) and Nearco ( Grandsire of Northern Dancer ) (14- 14 ).

Three of the very best. 8)

We’ve been lucky enough to have a flurry of great mares lately Black Caviar, Zenyatta, Goldikova, Rachel Alexandra, but I think Zarkava is definitely the best mare I’ve seen. So easy to forget how unbelievable she was. She never ever came close to get defeated. Won the French Triple Tiara and finished the season with the world’s biggest race in the Arc. She’s also the only one to have beaten another of the mares on the list in Goldikova (twice). What she did to Goldikova in the Poule D’Essai des Pouliches (also beat her in the Diane) was absolutely ridiculous. She went past Goldikova as if she wasn’t there with Soumillon giving her a hands and heels ride and even looking behind for the last 100 metres. People didn’t quite realise how incredible that performance was back then as no-one really knew the legendary racemare that Goldikova would go on to become. But, there’s no way I could imagine any of the other mares giving Goldikova a thrashing like she did that day and on Goldikova’s specialist distance too. Her finish in the Vermeille when she came to pick up Dar Re Mi from an impossible position after completely flopping the start was another jaw-dropping performance. Most underrated horse I know of.
