Why I am thinking there was something similar run at Newbury?
August 18, 2021 at 19:16 #1557278LD- there was a similar match earlier the same season at Newbury, in which Willie Carson beat Cash Asmussen.
August 18, 2021 at 20:33 #1557286The Tom Jones Princes Gate is one animal that springs to mind though I would have guessed it was a team comp a year or two earlier. I do recall a young Chris McCarron in one of the teams comps and without meaning to go off track, he appeared in an episode of Quincy – think I have must have watched them all and two had racing themes, one was a Panoramaesque slaughterhouse one – cannot remember which one McCarron was involved in. Must add that the celebrated Klugman was a successful owner at a high level and a genuine racing enthusiast.
August 19, 2021 at 14:58 #1557385Prince’s Gate is correct; he made all under Shoemaker. Everyone struggling with Lester’s mount?
Here are some clues: trained by Jeremy Hindley; ran in the famous Mrs Haggas colours; won the Cecil Frail earlier that season.
August 20, 2021 at 16:25 #1557562No takers on Lester’s mount?
If not, I’ll pass the baton to Cancello, seeing that he at least got Prince’s Gate right.
August 20, 2021 at 16:28 #1557564Don’t think I would get the Hindley horse but think he began with an ‘O’ if it’s the one I’m thinking of.
August 20, 2021 at 16:41 #1557566Initials are SP.
August 20, 2021 at 17:35 #1557578I’ll throw a Q from getting Princes Gate but obviously if someone got the Hindley animal they can of course take their turn.
OK, my Q – what was the name of the highest rated animal
(both OR and Timeform) that John Dunlop trained for Nelson Bunker HuntAugust 22, 2021 at 18:30 #1557860Some clues – quality middle distance handicapper who ended up a pattern winning stayer, being campaigned over further as he aged. Was still in training as an entire at six. Achieved his highest annual Timeform rating of 120 as a five year old.
August 22, 2021 at 21:24 #1557868I had to go through my old Timeform annuals to find the answer; so that disqualifies me.
August 23, 2021 at 12:49 #1557910I’ll leave it open for another 24 hours – will add that he won the Beesborough, was warm favourite when turned over by John Cherry in the Queen Alexandra, and also won the Henry 11 in his final year racing……got SP but also had to raid my bookshelfs.
August 23, 2021 at 16:48 #1557930Cancello – Would I be right in thinking its the same owner of Dahlia & Empery?
If it is I think I might have got the right horse from a very odd connection to dual Champion Hurdler Sea Pigeon…..the horse I am thinking of is Billion who finished tailed off behind the great horse in the 1980 Vaux Breweries Gold Tankard at Redcar.August 23, 2021 at 17:20 #1557934I think you could be right with Billion, @LD73. I’ve been racking my brain over this and Billion was the only horse I could think of. No idea if it was owned by NBH mind, but vaguely remember Billion was a decent handicapper who progressed into a group class performer when upped in trip.
Just worked out the horse Lester rode in the match was Spanish Pool.
August 24, 2021 at 23:38 #1558042LD 73 and Jimsun – yes, Billion the one. Yeah, Bunker Hunt had a terrific but manageable sized number of animals in training – Youth and Exceller two other notable ones.
I believe Gladiateur will confirm Spanish Pool is correct too.
August 25, 2021 at 15:00 #1558069Spanish Pool was correct. Over to whoever got Billion first without looking it up… LD73, I believe.
August 26, 2021 at 16:09 #1558170I happen to have a question to post, if I could have the first go.
How about it, LD73 ?August 26, 2021 at 21:41 #1558202Have at it – got nothing lined up. Apologies for the delay in replying.
