Every racing quiz I have ever seen on any forum anywhere eventually gets killed stone dead – or at least stopped in its tracks at some point – by too obscure a question.
In fact on some other forums I’ve seen anoraks, who like to indulge in willy waving about the depths of their obscure historical knowledge, reduce lively threads to tumbleweed.
I think these threads work best – and last longest – when the answers are universally “gettable” and it’s rapid turnover and basically fastest finger first.
That said, if it’s ridiculously easy getting one right becomes meaningless so it’s difficult to strike the right balance sometimes.

Who rode 7 winners at Ascot in 1996?
August 14, 2021 at 08:00 #1555448Love it, Homer!
Mind you, I’d imagine quite a few jockeys might have ridden seven winners at Ascot in 1996.
I can only think of one who did it on the same card, though.
Can’t quite recall his name – I’m just going to phone Gary Wiltshire and see if he remembers.

August 14, 2021 at 08:32 #1555451Lefranco Dettori
Doesn’t look right but something like that. I much preferred when it said L Dettori on the card in the old days to the modern cards that call him Frankie Dettori. The L Dettori added 1/2 length to every ride imo.
August 14, 2021 at 10:48 #1555516At the risk of being that very anorak who kills a quiz thread stone dead with an impossible question, I first attended York’s opening day in 1980 and the remarkable thing was one sire was responsible for four winners on the card.
Can anyone name the sire and the four winners?
Clue – the races were: the Benson & Hedges as was, the Yorkshire Oaks, the Lonsdale and the Acomb.

Hoist with my own petard!
And not for the first time!
(Nor very probably the last)
I will award a correct answer to anyone who can simply name the sire or any one of his four winning progeny from that 1980 card.
So long as you didn’t Google, as per TTC’s rules!

August 14, 2021 at 16:29 #1555765I don’t know the Sire, but Troy won the B&H in 1980 I think?

That question could be either ridiculously easy or ultra anorak level, depending on how you read it.
August 14, 2021 at 17:30 #1555774ID:
The sire is certainly High Line.
I’m also certain that Shoot A Line won the Yorkshire Oaks. Heighlin is a possibility for the Lonsdale.
The other two I don’t know. I wouldn’t be surprised if their names were drug inspired. Maybe Cocaine was one of them, and Fuego Gold the other.
Good question.
August 14, 2021 at 17:31 #1555775Ian- the 1980 Yorkshire Oaks was won by Shoot A Line and the B&H Gold Cup by Master Willie, both by High Line.
Don’t know the other two, though.
August 14, 2021 at 18:14 #1555780Between you all, you’ve got the lot.
High Line was the sire and Master Willie, Shoot A Line, Heighlin and Cocaine were the four winners.
What a cracking day’s racing that was.
My first visit to York.
