Have my eyes just deceived me, but i’m sure i just saw Ann Stokell down to ride in the 3:00 at Southwell today on Orpen Wide?!
Where has she been, as i’ve not seen her on a racecourse for more than a year? And what happened to Pawan?!
April 10, 2012 at 11:40 #399872Good spot, I thought she had retired! I used to see an old bloke in a pub at lunchtimes who bet Pawan every time it ran and laughed at the result whatever it was, if he’s still about he’ll still be looking for it’s next run, pension at the ready.
She didn’t used to ride much for other people if I recall and it could just be a one off ride but the registered trainer list on the BHA website which is updated weekly still shows her as a registered trainer with a combined licence and she obviously still has her jockeys licence and all of her horses are still registered to her – maybe she’s just had a very long holiday?
April 10, 2012 at 11:54 #399876I did a search on the RP website and a news article came up from the summer of 2010 saying that she was looking forward to starting up again after moving, perhaps she hit a snag on the way?
April 10, 2012 at 12:01 #399879Thanks for the in Seven Towers.
One thing that does baffle me is that she can still claim 5lbs. I thought after a certain age you couldn’t claim? She seems to be around forever and a day (no disrespect). I’m sure she started riding at the same time as Kim Tinkler.
April 10, 2012 at 12:04 #399880RP website is not updated still showing her as based near Darlington but BHA shows Lincoln, not far from stables at Southwell – makes sense, won’t have much transport costs!
April 10, 2012 at 12:18 #399882I’ve just read that too.
Maybe she’ll be having some runners soon under her name again. I know people have varying views about Ann, but i enjoyed seeing her old stagers running in low rated handicaps over the years.
Good luck Ann.
April 10, 2012 at 22:30 #399952They changed the rules a few years back to allow jockeys who hadn’t ridden out their claim as apprentices/conditionals the opportunity to do so.
Ann must be one of the oldest pro jockeys to be still claiming, and if I recall she isn’t that far ahead of the winners required to go from 7lbs to 5lbs so still a long way to go.As for poor Orpen Wide,I do wish he’d retire him.
April 26, 2012 at 21:30 #402240She has 2 entered , each in a maiden race , at Haydock
this Saturday evening .April 29, 2012 at 04:31 #402494One of which ran well to finish 3rd (as did Orpen Wide the other day!).
But more importantly, look who has an entry at Brighton on Thursday.
Yep at the age of 12 Pawan is about to make a comeback.June 7, 2012 at 17:38 #407236She has trained and ridden the winner of the last race [ a maiden ] at Wolverhampton with Hold The Star at 100 – 1 { Betfair SP 261.90 ] .
June 8, 2012 at 11:01 #407334I just saw the replay of Hold The Star’s win yesterday for Ann Stokell. What a result. Shame i didn’t have my £1ew on her!
A fluke win?!
June 8, 2012 at 13:17 #407344The horse did most of the work to hold what looked a mixture of incapables and dodgepots. Still a win’s a win and when Ann put him in the right place Hold The Star showed more than enough determination down the straight.
