Rumours that Kevan "The Colonel" Minter has been approached to replace Mr Loughran as the BBC’s betting expert/oddschecker translator are as yet unconfirmed.
What surprises me about this tale is all the hue and cry about a semi-professional punter not paying their council tax.
I’ve yet to meet one who does
February 13, 2008 at 21:19 #142925Will the fashion features at the Royal meeting this year treat us to glimpses of Angus, outside the course, bedecked in a morning suit with a sandwich board slung over his shoulders urging all sinners to repent?
Despite his apparent ‘troubles’, he’ll still end up with more more money coming into his pocket in one week than most honest people earn in a month. There are some people in this world who deserve a kicking, whether or not they’re up or down, and BBC luvvies feature high on that list.
February 13, 2008 at 23:07 #142948T C,
I don’t think you’ve studied the job description carefully enough.
Can you read a betting show straight off the screen, whilst emphasising the wrong syllable of every word?
Can you say ‘6/1 into 11/2, the each way gamble of the race’ without giggling?
Can you dress in a manner that makes you look bankrupt (oh, perhaps that one’s explained now) ?
Do you look at least ten years older than your actual age?
Overall, I strongly suspect that a couple of years reading TRF renders you grossly over qualified for the job.
AP
And the ability to correctly translate between decimal and fractional odds would make you over-qualified (for Arc weekend, at least)

February 13, 2008 at 23:16 #142952Certainly his creditability as a betting expert is fair game. However, I’m not sure why, on the day when a man is declared bankrupt, comments such as these are necessary:
Thought he lived with his mum too? Not saying theres anything wrong with that…but have the police taken away his computer?
There are rumours that a remake of Psycho is being made, with Angus as Norman Bates
Childish, unnecessary and in pretty poor taste.
As I’ve stated before, this place has recently turned into the refugee forum for all those banned from Betfair’s forum.
February 14, 2008 at 00:03 #142960Ive never seen so many vultures in one place!!!!
The guys on the floor(bankrupt) and all you can do is kick him in the teeth,unbelievable..just hope you would expect the same treatment if it was you that was bankrupt.
Should be ashamed of yourselves…the guy looks like a pervert..what age are some of you guys on here.
Come on
February 14, 2008 at 00:09 #142962Had the voice and the style which urged myself to listen to the latest market moves prior to post-time. I liked him plenty.
February 14, 2008 at 00:11 #142963Thought he was a legend on Fantasy Football. Loved that program. Wish the guy good luck.
February 14, 2008 at 07:45 #142994What should our reaction be to the news, then?
Sympathy……….."there but for the grace……………"…………..I don’t think so.
I think the criticism of him as a "betting-market guru" would be better aimed at the wonderful BBC. What does it take for this corporation to see that they have made a bad choice and remove the man from the position?
I was never sure of his role on Fantasy Football justed looked like a straight-man for the "comedians" to make fun of.
Quite how he got from that show to being the Beeb’s betting expert is beyond me.
I have met and spoken to him once at the races and, unless his behaviour can be excused by him having "had a bad day on the horses", I found him ignorant in most senses of the word.

February 14, 2008 at 08:08 #142997I find a lot of the comments posted on here regarding Angus Loughran offensive.
Whatever the rights or wrongs of his personal matters are comments linking him having a perversion just he may or not have been living with his mother are unacceptableWe could do well to remember others in racing that have been in a similiar position and that includes APs former trainer David Elsworth.
Trainer Ian Semple and one of his owners is facing the same fate at present through no real fault of their own. I trust there will be no such comments on here regarding them.
‘No man is an island entire of itself
Each is a piece of the continent
A part of the main
If a clod be washed away by the sea
Europe is the less
As well as if a promontary were
As well as if a manner of their own
Or of thrine freinds were
Each mans death diminishes me,
For I am involved in all mankind
Therefore, send me not to know
For whom the bell tolls
It tolls for me.

I have found some of the comments on this thread quite nauseating

Well, Willie Carson & Jim McGrath are still in their positions.
I find the most extraordinary thing about "Statto’s" betting analysis on the BBC is there being absolutely no mention of Betfair, is this because the Beeb don’t approve of exchanges only bookmakers or Statto being incapable of interpreting the exchange markets? Whatever, his analysis is a farce and does not reflect betting as it is today.
February 14, 2008 at 08:59 #143003I find him very amusing , his ignorance of betting parlance is legendary in our household , we always have a giggle when he is on the box
February 14, 2008 at 09:07 #143006Whilst not related to Angus himself, more to the "betting analysis", does anyone else find Channel 4’s arrows tedious and misleading? A horse that has drifted from 2/1 to 4/1 only to be clipped into 7/2 suddenly becomes a positive!
Sorry but it annoys me.
February 14, 2008 at 09:20 #143007Norman Bates has always been a hero.
His preferred tissue was a lot less lively
but he was a far better dresser than LoughranFebruary 14, 2008 at 09:25 #143008We can tell it’s half-term – the children are online.
February 14, 2008 at 09:31 #143009
thanks I never realised
I seem to be on a permanent holiday
I wish
The only child in this house
is Lollys mate’s girlFebruary 14, 2008 at 09:43 #143011Loughran exhibited a lot of geniality
and seemed genuinely enthusiatic
I always enjoyed his ‘ interludes ‘
Quite liked the green cloak too
and am sorry to hear his bank has run dry - AuthorPosts
