[i:3vc9r4xw]The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why Richard Hughes, the rider of WOOLFALL TREASURE, which finished fifth, beaten a nose for fourth place, appeared to stop riding in the final half furlong. Hughes stated that he had become very tired and suffered from cramp in his legs. The Racecourse Medical Officer confirmed that on his examination of Hughes after the race, he found the rider to be suffering from cramp. The Stewards noted the explanation.[/color:3vc9r4xw][/i:3vc9r4xw]

You really are a tactful old Hector HGM.
October 5, 2012 at 17:34 #415318Interesting perhaps from the perspective that it could open the doors to a plethora of similar excuses in future dubious performances?
… otherwise I’m lacking in the cerebral department too.

October 5, 2012 at 18:29 #415327Next excuse; Leaves on the line?
October 5, 2012 at 18:38 #415330i vaguely remember maybe about 6 or 7 years ago i think it was an amatuer race at the curragh (could be wrong) and it was a photo finish by two horses from the same stable the one beaten in the photo was given a very gentle ride and the jockeys explanation to the stewards was that he wasnt fit enough and probably shouldnt have been race riding

Have you watched a replay of the race?
Stops riding 50 yards from the line, thinking he is clear.
Suddenly starts riding again in the final stride when the other horse came upsides – clearly a miracle recovery.
Clearly the Stewards were happy to accept his explanation.

And rightly so.
Nothing untowards here, his horse had clearly run its race and couldn’t better his position so you complain about a horse he’s totally unaware of that has been ridden 7-10 lengths behind all race snatching a nosed place receiving the best part of a stone?
You’ve clearly backed the horse and have lost some form of monetary value which is why you’re coming with the approach you’ve chosen.
How can a doctor make an objective diagnosis of cramp?
You do know it’s improper for a doctor to give a false diagnosis under oath and would be crucified in the court of law, oh know but it’s alright for you to cast judgement on them because you’re of the medical profession with 15-20 years under your belt right? no, thought not.

Totally incorrect – I did not have a bet in the race.
Also it involved fourth / fifth place so had no relevance in terms of betting.
October 6, 2012 at 08:03 #415395The key thing here is the racecourse medical officers opinion that he had cramp, and based on that it seems reasonable for the stewards to give Hughes the benefit of the doubt although they noted the explanation. He was stood down from the next race and must pass the doctor today.

This place is full of unemployed brickies labourers and you’re asking us?
Muscle spasms/tension oor the patient jumping about shouting oh ya bastid my effin legs are killing me is a dead giveaway
October 6, 2012 at 09:09 #415411This is absolutely ludicrous. The stewards must reside on top of a Christmas Tree to believe such nonsense.
Hardly fills the punter full of confidence.
October 6, 2012 at 09:11 #415412If Hughes was one to pull a fast one he would of done it in India save getting banned for half the season –
Indian steward ‘Why you stop riding Mr Hew’
Richard ‘Well I ate a vindaloo last night and’… well you get the picture.

Just watched it.. Cramp aside he had done extremely well to get what he got out of the horse" He must have been pushing that horse for more than half the race and have every right to say enough is enough with all chance is gone. If there was money for finishing 4th I imagine the stewards pulled him in with no other intentions than appeasing the owner.
If Hughsie had said the horse was tired had no more to give and he stopped ridng in the horses interest they would have most likely accepted that. Then he wouldn’t have missed a mount or had to go foracheck up today…Instead he told the truth.
That said he has been known to go too easy on them when he can’t win and annoy place punters myself included on occasions…….But he’s still my number 1 by a long way.
