Hi UM.
I have put a few pictures online … Zion, Red and Bryce Canyons.
The index page is here and there is a link to return to the index at the bottom of each page. The pictures aren’t perfect as I have had to compress them to make them Internet friendly.
Hope you like them!!

Also don’t let Gamble’s story put you off – San Francisco is a beautiful city – if like me you are of a certain age (apologies if you are not) then you can see why SF was the place to be in the 60’s _ I hasten to say I was only a child in the 60’s – any older I would have been out there.
February 17, 2008 at 23:32 #144324Appreciate those Paul
and the fleece reference was very good.
Yosemite is a good range
I think roadrunner was filmed there.I climbed part of the face of Mt Tamapoleus
Mt Tam. they called it.
I could go up all right
but wasn’t able to come down.
Can’t really remember How I got down
I was three thousand feet up.
I walked up the mountain
via the public walkway,
Hi, gooday, how are ye,
Hi, gooday, how are ye,
always repeated what they said,
Then I gritted my teeth and climbed
the whole of eighteen feet
from the path right up the face
– There was a rope
fastened above me on a hook.
I was the soap
or some would say
dope on the end.
I hate heights.No – when I went out there
there was no golfing season on.
I went out there mainly
for the peaches.
Found them
in different clubs
and on the beachesFebruary 17, 2008 at 23:40 #144326hi Paul, gosh I had you down as younger than that…lol…yeah I remember Flower Power, hippies and all that too I’m afraid [vaguely!!]…
…used to love that song San Francisco [flowers in your hair] Scott Mckenzie…not so much now though…those photos are fantastic, I’m getting the most amazing colours off them, so clear. Thanks so much for putting them up, I hope you’ll leave them there a day or two as I want to show my husband tomorrow when he gets in.
My favourite I think is the strange pillar in Bryce Canyon which to my eye, and I suppose everyone will see something different, is of a woman in a dress with her right arm raised and on top of her head to one side, is a man with his hand on forehead and doing a jig…well, that’s what I see. I expect it has a name, maybe translated from the Indian, I wonder what that would be.
Fantastic rock shapes Paul, never knew Utah was so beautiful like this, and presumably you were with that group of riders crossing the stream. Any chance you can remember the name of this stream at all, as I’m trying to place it on Microsoft Virtual Earth. I found the canyons but cannot find The Three Patriarchs in Bryce, they don’t seem to be named there quite so well as in Zion.
You could have caught one of those Turkeys!…lol..
February 18, 2008 at 00:08 #144330Now I know what
compressed meat feels like
in a sandwich
God bless the two of them

And long live America
February 18, 2008 at 00:17 #144334sorry you got sandwiched there gamble…you tasted nice
February 18, 2008 at 00:28 #144336The name’s Bryce
February 18, 2008 at 08:00 #144351UM – the photo’s aren’t going anywhere.
Sorry if I confused you – the Three Pariachs are in Zion – I have a photo of the explanatory notice which I will add to the pics shortly.
Bryce Canyon is awesome – there are literally thousands of these stone columns and they change shape and colour throughout the day – if you have a fertile imagination you can see the most amazing shapes. At the "lower" end of teh canyon there are trails that actually go doen the canyon and between these pillars – unfortunately I only had one day there and it was a choice of walking down or seeing as much of teh canyon as possible. When I return though!!!!
I will stick some more Bryce photos up as well – give me an hour or two – well I have time today with Market Rasen being called of!!! I did toy with Lingfield but just cannot face going AW racing today.
Almost forgot to add the stream is the Virgin River which runs through the middle of Zion. – and I am not cruel enough to inflict my weight on any horse!!!
February 18, 2008 at 08:42 #144358OK I have added a couple more to the Zion page plus a second page of Bryce snaps
Enjoy
February 18, 2008 at 11:00 #144387
gamble – just as well we’re not talking about Australia – you might have been called Bruce!Paul,
thanks for those additions, more stunning photography. They look like ancient ruins, incredible formations, and that lone tree with it’s roots out the ground!..lol…My mistake about the Three Patriarchs, need new specs.
I’ll go and have another look for them on the maps. I thought they ought to be in Zion as all the other ones there have names with a similar theme and I must see if I can find that river too.
I expect you’d like to go back, there’s never enough time on one visit, is there. I could do with 3 or 4 years over there really. Are you planning any other excursions in the near future?

Hi again UM,
Only two days currently planned in the States this year (although have not ruled out New York for a few days in the Autumn, possibly on the way back from the Breeders Cup, which is another possible option) – going to Vegas for two days in August then off to Canada again – up to Vancouver Island for three weeks, it looks to have everything, mountains and lakes, as well as opportunities for both whale and bear watching, although presumably not at the same time!!
All being well, I will definitely be going back to Bryce Canyon sometime, however I am torn between going back or going something new.
Of course I will be doing the European excursions as well – try to get away somewhere at least once a month, if only for a couple of days.
I have added a few Canadian pics as well:-
February 18, 2008 at 15:10 #144481hi Paul,
I’ve been reading up on it all on Wikipedia, lots of information there to be had, and I see that strange pillar rock in Bryce might be the one called ‘Thor’s Hammer’.
I’ve found the river on Virtual Earth and some of the rocks can be viewed through ‘birds eye view’, only a little unfortunately.
Expect you had a nice comfy ride in the shuttle bus through Zion Canyon?
save on the driving.
My husband loved the photos by the way…he’d go there at the drop of a hat.gosh, you’ve got a lot planned so I hope you enjoy your other holidays this year no doubt working it around the racing…lol…..that’s what we have to do.
Only going as far as Northumbria this year, walking in the Cheviots and I’ve had to make sure only rubbishy meetings or some all weather ***** is on the t.v. at that time otherwise we’ll never leave the house
…Oh I’ve just seen your Canada photos…you’ve been to Quebec!!..I want to go there
…yes that church does look quite brilliant but I loved the photos of Niagara, some relatives went there last year and they flew over it too, and the autumn colours in Algonquin park. I’d like to cruise the St Lawrence River, if that’s possible.I noticed you on your own at Woodbine – is it always like that?..Woodbine I mean!

If I used to keep notes like I did in my younger days I could tell you, now I snap away and forget what the hell I’ve taken. I have to use the date / time as a reminder

Hobsons choice as Zion Canyon is only open to private cars "off season" – it’s quite nice to be driven though

Easiest option is to fly to Vegas and it is about a four hour drive from there to Zion. We stayed at a place called Grand Junction, just the "other side" of Zion – handy for both Zion and Bryce.

You could do a lot worse than tie an a trip to Hexham whilst you are up there.
…Oh I’ve just seen your Canada photos…you’ve been to Quebec!!..I want to go there

I would go back there tomorrow – well not quite tomorrow as I believe the daytime temps are aroung -16 at the moment
It is a beautiful city.I’d like to cruise the St Lawrence River, if that’s possible.
It is definitely possible – there were cruise ships as far up as Montreal – in Quebec the QM2 had been in the day before. Plust there are many local shipping companies
I noticed you on your own at Woodbine – is it always like that?..Woodbine I mean!

Yes Woobine is a typical AW track as far as crowds are concerned
Actually to be fair despite my attire it was a little on the cool side that day and a lot of punters were viewing from inside. Also Woodbine stages both "real" racing and trotting and it is the trotting that really packs them in by all accounts.February 18, 2008 at 16:42 #144507Hi Paul and UM – and to a certain extent Gamble
,Just want to say thanks for your contributions on this thread (especially the pictures). It’s been, and continues to be, a great insight in to what appears as a fantastic country.
Thanks guys,
Mike
February 18, 2008 at 16:56 #144515oh thank you Mike, thanks for looking on….and why didn’t you join in?..doesn’t have to be America…..Torremolinos?

thanks for your reply Paul. yeah, we’ll be going to Hexham – in the High Street – they do great fish and chips!

Never been there UM. I’ve got some pics of Butlins if you want to see them

February 18, 2008 at 18:12 #144529Glad you’re enjoying the thread MM
February 18, 2008 at 21:09 #144557Butlins is fine Mike

meant to ask you Paul, did you go out in those canoes? they all look quite new lined up there. I’m sure they’d accommodate you well enough
…the colour on those trees is unreal.did you find the Quebec people friendly enough to you? I’ve often wondered as I don’t think they like to be part of Canada or anything with British connections. Maybe you weren’t there long enough to notice, or to bother you especially. Quaint looking houses, presumably the older part of town?
