Just been reported on ITV that she had to be put down following a fall in the Reynoldstown Novices Chase at Ascot.
So sad, such a beautiful grey mare. RIP Alsa Mix 😪
February 16, 2020 at 20:08 #1483097I try not to watch replays if a horse has died but last night I wanted to watch ITV Racing to get some clues for Cheltenham/Aintree. What saddens me is that, as the rank outsider there was hardly a mention of her both prior to the race and during it, until she fell. With all the euphoria about Cyrname getting up [of course, I,too, was euphoric and in floods of tears at the time so I’m not knocking it] her demise was largely overlooked albeit with ITV telling us of her death and offering their condolences [they’re very good at that and I take my hat off to them for it]. She was a beautiful creature and was running her heart out when she fell and she’s left a lot of broken hearts behind. RIP Alsa Mix.

I seriously think that she deserved exactly they same coverage Cyrname got. Why should she get less? Because of an inferior rating? Because of being a mare? Because she suffered more after she fell (or hopefully not)?
Not even Traffic Fluide got as much coverage as Cyrname did. His fall was at least as heartbreaking as Cyrnames’ and the jockey didn’t have the option of pulling him up, since he was still full of running.
Cobden had a few choices once he was headed and he also had the choice of sticking with the horse after it fell. I saw a picture of him in tabloid newspaper which showed Harry rushing to the dressing room. Can’t tell you, if it was shot before the horse got up or maybe after. But, you would like to have the jockey staying with the horse till the end. It wasn’t the groom riding the horse…..Anyway, rest in peace Alsa Mix
February 16, 2020 at 23:30 #1483125I suppose much of the coverage of Cyrname was speculation relating to the fact that he was still down, and the relief of all when he walked back. Traffic Fluide galloped away so we knew he was OK. Apparently Alsa Mix was dead before the vets could get to her so presumably suffered a heart attack (even though ITV said she’d been PTS). At least it was quick for her, poor girl.
ITV showed Cobden walking away and it was some time before the good news came through. I then assumed Cyrname had died as, like you, I would have expected him to stay. Perhaps he didn’t want to face Paul Nichols or the owner. Watching the replay, it was clear the horse was exhausted and virtually stopping after the second last. Even Janika was about to pass him so he would have been tailed off last if he hadn’t fallen.
February 17, 2020 at 00:23 #1483136When I saw Harry Cobden walking away I think he was with that girl that’s always with the Nicholls horses; I think her name’s Donna. When I saw that I was convinced Cyrname was dead which is why I couldn’t believe it when they showed him walking away [it’s making me cry now just thinking about it]. But it does make me feel so sad about the mare.
February 17, 2020 at 12:19 #1483144I thought she was acquitting herself well against strong opposition and was saddened by her demise. Our great organ of record The Racing Post just states her as a faller. R.I.P.
February 17, 2020 at 13:00 #1483147She had a good write up in my Jumping Prospects book. Highly thought of by the stable and a prolific winner. Should never have been a 25.1 shot, either….
