As the all-weather season has started I thought I would share my thoughts about the going etc, the official going given out most days is usually nowhere near what the actual going was, what you thought might have been a fast time was actually just average.
The going allowance table I work to, was worked out from analysing thousands of races along with the class pars that I use.
AW going allowance table:
Fast +0.50s/f
Stand/Fast +0.18s/f to +0.40s/f
Standard -0.15s/f to +0.15s/f
Stand/Slow -0.48s/f to -0.18s/f
Slow -0.70s/f to -0.50s/fMy class pars:
G1-120
G2-113
G3-109
LST-104
C2-92
C3-86
C4-77
C5-68
C6-58
C7-49Two meetings to look at on the 14/11/12.
The going at Kempton I found was riding standard to fast at +0.25s/f per furlong and the official going was given as standard, at Southwell the official going was given as standard and I had the going at +0.30s/f per furlong which is standard to fast.
The fast going at Southwell explains how Outpost an 80 rated horse dipped under the standard time for the 6f trip by -0.51s.

Kempton (AW) 14-Nov-12 Whozthecat (IRE) 16/1 71 (Class 3)The best individual performances on the day were Brandywell Boy +10, Itum +9 (4.55 Kempton) and Outpost +7, Take Cover +7 (3.20 Southwell).
To explain the Individual performances, for example I consider Brandywell Boy ran 10lbs better than his official mark 50 hence the speed figure of 60
.November 16, 2012 at 01:07 #419977I make my own speed ratings, and agree the official going bears very little resemblance to the actual going that I find after racing has finished when I work out my going correction for my ratings.
Although this is not ideal I haven’t found a great deal of difference in my Speed Ratings due to the going. I seem to find that a horse running a particular rating on Standard going runs a very similar rating on Fast or Slow going.
Just as well, as there is no way of knowing beforehand what the actual going is.

On Friday and Saturday this week, I sent off 2 emails to
The Racing Post
informing them they used the wrong standard times again for the
Tapeta
races at
Meydan
, they used their standard times for the Turf instead, at last I see that they have finally corrected this.
It is an easy mistake to make as Turf and Tapeta begin with the same letter "T"

When Adam Kirby set a furious pace in the 7.05 on
Seeking Magic
he set up the winner
Noverre To Go
to dip under the standard by
-0.53s
in this (class 4) contest.
When I worked out the going allowance at 0.00s/f per furlong and 9st for
Noverre To Go
, he had achieved a speed figure of
114
which would be a (Group 2) par time, hence my adjusted going allowance of
+0.33s/f
.
Seeking Magic
should be nailed on to win next time out under a more conservative ride.
Nothing else to note from the rest of the card as most of it was low quality stuff run on a super fast track

December 2, 2012 at 07:16 #421434After yesterdays meeting at Wolverhampton, I expect this is the last time we will see racing on Wolverhampton’s polytrack due to the kickback.
The hobbits at the BHA, sorry I mean elf and safety, cannot allow racing to continue on this surface anymore

For some time now, the polytrack has been riding on the fast side of standard, during the summer months it was riding around
+0.30s/f
per furlong (standard to fast).
AW going allowance table:
Fast +0.50s/f
Stand/Fast +0.18s/f to +0.40s/f
Standard -0.15s/f to +0.15s/f
Stand/Slow -0.48s/f to -0.18s/f
Slow -0.70s/f to -0.50s/fThere is no doubt in my mind that the structure of the polytrack has broken down and I expect there to be an announcement from the BHA to this fact
