It is named after a part of the centre of Glasgow down by the river Clyde near the Jamaica Bridge and is not the sort of area that genteel folks would want to visit at midnight on a Saturday. Let’s just say it gets a bit lively.

Lived in the city for nine years and was warned off it by concerned friends early on. I was once accused of being down there at midnight on a Saturday by someone who was convinced he had seen me at the rougher end. He would have had a job as I could prove I was 100 miles away at the time.

Nonetheless, don’t let it put you off visiting Glasgow it is a wonderful place to go to and I still have good friends in the West End.

My son studied Mackintosh for A level art years ago; we went up to Glasgow for a few days [and Helensburgh [sp] ]….I’ve since fallen in love with Edinburgh as well but then I just told everyone to go to Glasgow; it was probably one of the best holidays I’ve ever had. I couldn’t actually believe that I was sitting in the tearooms in Sauchiehall [sp] St., and the visit to the School of Art was the icing on the cake; thought I’d died and gone to heaven!

Just so u know bbobbell although the bridge over the Clyde at the bottom of Jamaica St. is thought by many to be called after this street it is actually called Glasgow Bridge, I used to live just round the corner on Gorbals St.[many moons ago].Still impressed by your knowledge of the area for a London chiel.

    regards
