What did everyone think of that performance today.
It looked like to me it was a piece of work on the gallops. I’ve seen milk turn quicker that Alcohol Free ran today.
She as won 3 Group 1s and not any of the others had one a group race. She did not even carry a Group penalty and was at least 12lbs in. Yet she drifts to odds against from odds on and was never put in the race to win it.
The thing that amazes me the most though is how the “professionals” just accept it and make all manner of excuses for the run.
Personnaly it makes me why I bother.
Andrew balding was on Nick Luck earlier in the week saying how well she had been working and was looking forward to her running. She had also won first time out as a 2 and 3 year old so nothing to with fitness.
ShamefulApril 22, 2022 at 20:21 #1595260She look quite keen to me for the first half, maybe she wasted some energy fighting.
April 22, 2022 at 20:27 #1595263The drift in the betting was alarming. As John McCririck used to say, “Someone Knew.”
April 22, 2022 at 21:33 #1595273I was at Sandown Park today.
The bits of the round course I walked didn’t have the give she perhaps best thrives on.
I don’t agree for one second she was never put in the race to win it – she just couldn’t pick up when the pace quickened in what was a fairly steadily-run race.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"April 22, 2022 at 23:11 #1595291I did read something interesting about her sire no nay never
It seems his progeny become less and less effective as they get older
April 23, 2022 at 07:01 #1595309That would make sense – he was a speedy, precocious type, who was unbeaten at two, twice beaten at three, and never raced thereafter.
Maybe the filly hasn’t made normal weight-for-age improvement from three to four?
When she won the Sussex Stakes the weight-for-age was 8lb – maybe she simply hasn’t made that average normal 8lb improvement since then?

But there was obviously no stable confidence behind her and the bookies obviously thought they could get her beaten.
April 23, 2022 at 09:43 #1595324A seriously difficult ride and it is always liable to go either way. Absolutely no offence to the jockey but Oisin has got the best out of her on occasions and I suspect its a bloody hard task. But Oisin is a great jockey imo
April 23, 2022 at 09:46 #1595325That’s interesting FF.
One thing punting seriously lacks is a brief bible that summarizes characteristics of sires offsprings. Doesn’t have to be nailed down and just opinion but the Pivotal soft ground etc
Never understood why guides of all guises simply ignore this
April 23, 2022 at 10:32 #1595334Expect a better run in the Lockinge

tbh It was blatantly obvious by some way Alcohol Free’s two best runs have come on Soft and heavy.
Yesterday was Good ground. Why shouldn’t “professionals” – or amateur form students come to that – “accept it”?
Value Is EverythingApril 23, 2022 at 17:34 #1595417Only just got beaten in the Falmouth on good to firm in a below standard time. Can’t see the ground being on the easy side yesterday would be against her. Have connections put up the ground as the reason for the below par effort?
April 23, 2022 at 19:49 #1595434Yes Alcohol Free was third, only beaten 1 3/4 lengths in the Falmouth, Yeats.
Alcohol Free had beaten both Falmouth winner Snow Lantern and second Mother Earth at Ascot on heavy yet failed at Newmarket despite having the run of the race from the front.
When taking into account having the run of the race imo Alcohol Free can only be rated as finishing 6th on good-firm in the Falmouth.
Unless a gelding, I would not expect connections to use good ground or good-firm as an excuse. Noticed over the years connections don’t seem to want to admit to all breeders) their horse does not act on good or good-firm ground. Also, Smith and Balding don’t seem to come out with excuses as much as some other trainers.
Value Is EverythingApril 23, 2022 at 23:19 #1595455I remember she got very well backed that day on GF ground, halved in price
April 23, 2022 at 23:42 #1595458I wouldn’t be making too many excuses for Alcohol Free and she’d have to be a gigantic price in the Lockinge for me to have a bet on her.
