He suffered a fit on board a plane taking him to France where he was due to ride Dutch Art on Sunday. The plane diverted to Cambridge where he was taken to hospital. He also missed the winning ride on S.Cecil today. He now has a red entry on his medical book and it is doubtful if the HRA will allow him to ride in the near future if ever again.
August 22, 2006 at 19:39 #75732He had a fit several years ago following a fall at Redcar. Shortly before his sabbatical, if memory serves.
Hope he’s okay
March 1, 2007 at 19:24 #945Just looking forward to the flat and was wondering if anyone had any news on Alan’s return or whether he has retired now due to his health problems. Apologies if it’s been in the news previously and I’ve missed it. Thanks.
March 1, 2007 at 20:17 #42388I think he was going to have to wait a year until reapplyingp for his licence and I also think I read he was going back to the far east. I’m not entirely sure however so I stand to be corrected.
March 1, 2007 at 23:13 #42389August this year is when his medical period is up. Only hope he is cleared to ride again. Brilliant jockey, superb judge of a horse and a very nice bloke. Very best wishes to him.

March 2, 2007 at 09:13 #42390Hey thanks for that Jane and Richard and I do agree about Alan and was really looking forward to his return and booting home a few 2yo’s for Millman early on…
ooh I don’t half miss him..;)
Grasshopper,
lol…those of us who are real fans of the sport can appreciate more than one code:biggrin:
my telly’s gone on the blink and it’s costing me 150 quid to get it put right in time for Cheltenham….so there !:)
March 2, 2007 at 21:14 #42391Grass,
…but just who is asserting that they are the same ? I don’t get that. I see them quite differently and appreciate the thrill of both. I also enjoy point to point and to me that’s a little different again, as is the all weather.
I remember Jenny Pitman once saying that she had no interest in the flat whatsoever, so like you it’s her prerogative but to my mind if you like horses, racing and having a little flutter to go with it, then I just feel people are missing out and those of us who go for all of it are the lucky ones, if we’re not in the poor house, but I did draw the line at banded though, and as for the politics…forget it!
Alan may be a hard man, I wouldn’t know, but I like the way he rides and I always felt I got my money’s worth with him, if you’ll excuse my choice of words there..lol.
I think we’ve long since got used to your colourful dialect hopper…in fact if I don’t see it I think you must be someone else.:)
March 3, 2007 at 11:45 #42392Hopper,
See this is the difference, I can also enjoy Wexford but equally look forward to a 2yo maiden coming up at Doncaster this month or my local p to p. I appreciate the year round interest this gives. Isn’t it all an industry though, people have to make a living. Arguably the p to p scene is where the term ‘sport’ should remain.
Just out of curiosity if you have the time to respond, what do you think of summer jumping ? I don’t notice you around too much during that time and wonder if you’re an Oct-Apr man. If that’s the case what on earth do you do in the summer? ….hmmm. maybe not answer that lol.
I’d bet you’re not an enthusiast.:)
I should caveat that by saying that I do quite like the big staying race at Royal Ascot (recently won by Westerner??), and I am happy to watch the Arc…
….well that’s good to know, seeing as the race in question has only been going 200 years – please keep up Hopper!..lol
best of luck at Cheltenham:)
