This is what really annoys me about horse racing and how wrong it is that we punters always get duped or appear to by trainers.
Tritronic won on soft going at Ascot on its first run over hurdles.
He had also run 3 times on the flat on soft going running well on each occasion.
However after the defeat today King tells the Stewards
“Alan King reported that TRITONIC, placed fifth, was unsuited by the going, which was officially described as Good to Soft, Good in places on this occasion, and would prefer a quicker surface.”
FFS give us a chance. What going does it need. Road conditions.
At times like this I really feel like giving up as it just seems pointless. I wonder if the Stewards pointed out it’s win on soft ground at Ascot?
I just wonder when/if it wins on soft ground if the Stewards will have King in to explain his comments or like usual nothing will be said.

I’d be also interested in hearing a logical explanation from the handicapper as to how he came to give this horse a mark of 147 for twice beating a horse rated 67 on the flat.

It was a really poor effort from Tritonic no matter what King says. I would not be surprised if he starts to focus more on the Flat because he is not at the races over jumps.

I still don’t understand what made Tritonic a 2/1 shot a few weeks ago. The Adonis was very weak this year and all the races run at Ascot this season haven’t been anything special.

Just name one race from Ascot this season that had an impact at this years’ Festival?

Apart from that it is true that King isn’t longer at the races over the jumps. 10-12 years ago, you thought of him as the next Paul Nicholls, but sadly many things have changed or have simply gone wrong.

He trains not far from me and appears to be leaning evermore towards the Flat.

The most disappointing run for me of the whole week. I like alan king and was hoping he would at least give the two Irish horses something to think about. Just a big let down.

In reality it’s likely that the horse turned out to be not quite as good as the trainer hoped. It hapoens, that’s why we have championship races.

I study race times closely and the ground was Good, Good to Soft in places at a push, ideal for Tritonic and a surface the favourite was unproven on over hurdles.

The ground cannot possibly be put up as a legitimate excuse for Tritonic.

It was simply a poor run.

Maybe he needs a level track and the undulating Cheltenham switchback didn’t suit him?

I am inclined to think Tritonic ran as well as he can. I cannot see him reversing the form on any track or ground.

I was taken in by him; he looked good winning at Kempton – which has turned out to be a poor race for the second year in a row. He had a similar flat profile, placed at Royal Ascot, though not as highly rated as Kribensis. There endeth the similarity.

Yes, and the horse he beat twice would have finished another 10 lengths behind. That’s how good the Adonis is right at the moment.

Something to consider is that just because a horse has won on softish ground does not mean the horse is at its best on softish ground. Depends when those soft ground races have come and their form ratings.

Tritonic ran three times over hurdles.
Ascot hurdles debut victory is – according to Racing Post Ratings – actually rated 2 lbs below the Triumph 5th. ie Both hurdles runs on softish ground are rated similar.
Between those two runs came an impressive Kempton win on good going rated 9 lbs better than the Triumph and 11 lbs better than Ascot.

So on hurdles form there is evidence King could be correct about Tritonic. ie So far he has been best on good ground.

That said, so far his form on the flat seems to suggest he’s only slightly better on good or good-firm than he is on a softish surface… And there’s so little in that, could yet be a coincidence – still has scope for improvement in both spheres.

Also: Although Ian may well be right in the Cheltenham going actually being less soft than the official, trainers rarely question going descriptions.

Just as likely to be a flat track that suits best, but personally I wouldn’t blame King for this excuse.

Tritonic and zanahiyr were both very keen in a slowly run race

Happy to give them both another chance
