    Hi Adrian,

Two factors – first is that my records going back to 1981 show the flat in October to be a losing proposition for me. In fact the last time I turned a worthwhile profit in October was the year Spirit Of Love won the Cesarewitch.

Second is that I like to have a clear few weeks between flat and jumps and in recent years, the NH racing in the second half of October has gained in significance as a pointer to future events. Back in the 90’s, I rarely bet the jumps before Badger Beer day at Wincanton, so continuing on the flat to mid October made sense, if not money!

I entirely agree that the meetings you list are of great interest and I look forward to watching them, but I’ll pass on the betting side.

Don’t know about AP, but I think they should be worn on everything I back.

AP,are you an advocate of the Ante-Post wager? Cheltenham is the Holy Grail for me as is the 1000/2000 gns for long term wagers.Do you think

    Shutthefrontdoor

will take the Novice chase route this coming Jumps season culminating in the RSA? Cheers,Gord.

Do you think he’s Grade 1 material Gord? I’d have him shortlisted for the Festival Handicap Chase on Tuesday

Over fences Tommy,Yes I do,you think he’s a ‘Wichita Lineman’ do you? Just through his stablemate ‘Holywell’ (who’s got to stay over hurdles) that run at Aintree against ‘Solwhit’ tells you

    Shutthefrontdoor

is Grade 1 potential, that ‘Pertemps Final’ performance was an eyecatching one imo and being an ‘Accordian out of a Strong Gale Mare’ shouts Chaser to me,he’s been nibbled on since I first put him up too!

I’ll put it this way Gord, it wouldn’t surprise me if he lined up in the Festival Handicap Chase with a stone and a half in hand

Just watched the Pertemps again, which was a bad idea because I’d done my best to forget the ride Jetson received…

    Tapk,

No I’m not an ante post punter, never have been, I can see the attraction, but back when I started out, access to ante post markets was limited to those with credit accounts and I never got involved in them. In addition of course, we didn’t get to see every race on TV, so the chances of spotting an unexposed horse for Cheltenham in an Irish novice race were nil. So I never got the habit of ante post betting.

I just feel more comfortable knowing I’ll get a run for my money and having all the relevant form to hand. Thank goodness we don’t all approach the game in the same way though, but that racing can embrace the win single on the day, the Placepot fan, the Lucky 15, the three or four in a race method as well as the ante post man.

    Nathan,

I’m having trouble adapting to the rash of clean sheets in the league, which could lead to Spurs fans having to learn to chant ‘1-0 to the Tottenham’, and rivals fans singing ‘Boring, boring, Tottenham’. Who knows where such a reversal of North London history might lead.

But if we manage to beat Chelsea on Saturday week, I’ll start getting excited. On what we’ve seen so far, not impossible that the current top six could still be closely packed come the New Year with the title wide open.

    Hi Alan,
I enjoyed your books and still have them.
I think at one time you were laying some short priced horses on Betfair,do you still do this? I tryed it but found I was better suited to backing Kitchi Koo type horses.
    Thanks for any answers.

Bloody Hell AP,you are showing your age! Surely your ‘Old school’ philosophy has needed to move with the times in order to maintain an approach that returns a profit?Todays style of betting does accomodate everyones individual tastes like you say,Every race nowadays has early odds offered with Best odds guaranteed etc,Back in the 80’s there were No such ‘treats. As for Ante-Post markets we were only ever offered the big races to play in,nowadays I can get a price on any race I like.I’m surprised someone like yourself doesn’t explore the Ante-Post possibilities as your own approach is based around talent spotting and targeting of horses,Cheers,Gord.

    CJ,

For the last two years, I’ve cut back my betting to the point that it’s more hobby again than full time to make a living. That’s mainly because I was finding that I lacked the enthusiasm and concentration for working at it 24/7. Maybe that’s down to age (I’m 66 now), maybe the wear and tear of doing it for 20 years, maybe the increasingly boring monotone nature of too much of the racing.

So far as laying is concerned, I’m of the opinion that you can only make it pay by having a high turnover and playing a lot of races. The margins were always small and if you drop your turnover, the commission rises and reduces the potential profit. So having decided to cut back my involvement, the decision to stop laying was an obvious one.

So I’ve gone full circle back to where I was in the early 90’s, except that most bets are via the exchange rather than on course.
