I’m amazed anyone can not feel excited by this superb race. A clash between the Arc winner, the Dubai World Cup winner and the second best horse in Japan? What more do you want? Shirocco taking on his stablemate? Deep Impact himself?
Americans? There’s nothing in America that could live with the three at the top of the market on turf.
The absence of the three year olds could have something to do with the fact that they don’t seem to be very good.
July 25, 2006 at 12:20 #73819The absence of three year olds, Zorro, may be due less to their percieved lack of merit, (I disagree with that contention, but only time will tell), but as Ian Balding once commented, a weakening of the breed over generations. Or an unwillingness to test the breed to the maximum extent on behalf of modern owners.
I was reading the story of Running Rein/Maccabeus the other day and the owners of 1844 ran their horses in a way that would astonish modern day enthusiasts. Stakes twice in a day, on consecutive days, etc.
July 25, 2006 at 15:11 #73820You may be right maxilon, but it’s only a few years ago that people wee talking about changing the wfa scale, such was the dominance of 3 yos in the race.
Yeah they ran one in the name of the other lol.
July 25, 2006 at 15:49 #73822They did indeed, TMM. And won a Derby with a 4 y o. Definitely worth reading the story.
A story of great ingenuity and cunning. It makes you wonder how much of this stuff goes on today. Plus ca change, and all that.
Agreed, Zorro. I remember that well. So, I really don’t have the answers on this one. It was just an idea.
July 25, 2006 at 18:48 #73823Or an unwillingness to test the breed to the maximum extent on behalf of modern owners.
Cant have that. British and Irish trainers test their horses far more now that in the 80’s etc when they were packed off to stud early. Now thanks to the likes of Godolphin and Stoute we see horses campaigned agressively at home and abroad and into the 4 and 5 year old campaigns….even Coolmore have done away with shying away from throwing their best colts and fillys in the toughest of tests.

Frankly the public barely knows about the Breeders cup whereas the top 3 year olds going for the eclipse then the KGV kept the momentum of the season ticking along very nicely. For me, the KGV was the highlight of the season

IT also tended to throw up less hardluck stories.

July 27, 2006 at 13:01 #2802I certainly don’t think Hurricane Run is an even money chance on fast ground. For me it’s a genuine three horse race Hurricane Run, Electrocutionist and Heart’s Cry. A win for anything else would be a big shock.
You can make a good claim for all three but I agree Hurricane Run’s very best form is not on fast ground and I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets turned over.
July 27, 2006 at 13:17 #74181Wasn’t Saint-Cloud the only time that Hurrican Run has raced left-handed?
July 27, 2006 at 21:16 #74182The failure of nerve on behalf of Ouija Board’s connections makes me wonder if its due to financial shortcomings?
Fallon cannot rate a horse in front.Due to the length of his irons he must rely on upperbody strength to hold a horse.Horses NEVER travel sweetly for him in the way they do for Dettori (or Richard Hughes for that matter)as they do ride much shorter and as a consequence place their weight above the horse’s shoulder rather than behind. To KF’s eternal credit he recognizes this and adjusts to suit;i.e.always tries to embed himself in the field.
A simple question.Where was H.R. in running at Saint Cloud?
A simple statement.I know that the percentage run is the Nassau for the mare, but why punish her for your own mistake of jockey selection at Sandown?

July 28, 2006 at 12:31 #74183HR lay? Not in that race i’m afraid, especially at odds against.
The race is a no play IMO, with the whole market revolving around the big three. It’s a watching race for me.

Same here, no bet. Got a sneaky feeling for Electrocutionist, think the race may be run to suit him better than Hurricane Run whilst the rain, though not putting an end to Hearts Cry’s chance by any means, has just probably not helped.
July 28, 2006 at 16:40 #74185Not a lay but a back with me. I’m taking the 11/10 tonight (having taken 5/4 earlier this week) as I think that will look value come post time tomorrow and I think the horse will win.

July 28, 2006 at 17:28 #73825ascot and debeers must be well miffed, they put up 750,000 in prize money for the king george and only six turn up and one of them is a pacemaker.
if i was them id slash the prize money by half and give it to the jump races in the winter where it will be more deserved.
July 28, 2006 at 17:32 #73826They’ve probably got three out of the five best in the world at the trip, runandskip. I wouldn’t think that would upset them enough to make them want to waste their money on obstacle races for old geldings.
Yep and not one three year old in the race that is supposed to be the one that brings together the older horses and three year olds for the first time over a mile and a half at group one level.
Sorry but for me this is an extremely poor and boring King George.
July 28, 2006 at 18:47 #74186I think it might look like value come post time – I reckon he’ll go off odds-on.
I’m a massive fan of the horse too – I think he’s a tool.
