They haven’t caved in. They just acted like grown ups and negotiated with the doctors, something the Tories weren’t bothering to do. GP practices, along with everything else, have been starved of cash for a long time . If we want a functional NHS we need to treat NHS staff with a bit more appreciation and respect. So much for everyone on their doorsteps clapping.
August 2, 2024 at 00:27 #1703622Labour have caved in big time.
I had the greatest respect for doctors until they ripped up the Hippocratic Oath and went on strike. Making the waiting lists so much worse and therefore making many patients suffer so they can get more money. If I knew then what I know now I would never have clapped…
And as for the 35% pay rise the Junior Doctors wanted that was – they claimed – just to get back to the sort of levels of wages they had x years ago (prior to the slumps): I hope doctors realise the same logic will be used against them when times are good…
ie Unfortunately, Governments will need to make absolutely sure doctors do NOT get their “fair share” of any future boom years. Because otherwise (their “35%” proves) they’ll want that same boom years pay increases at a time when the country is in another “cost of living crisis”. In other words: Future pay increases for doctors will need to be averaged out. So they’ll be paid a lot less than they used to in boom years; in order that governments can afford to pay them more (than they did this time) when the rest of the country is struggling.
Value Is EverythingAugust 8, 2024 at 14:15 #1704188I’m really struggling to understand Labour’s definition of ‘wealthy’ ….. where it starts and ends?
Just seen a story on news app where we have Reeves saying how she ‘winced’ when looking at her bank balance and the outgoings compared to the money coming in,as this was Jan she would have been on MP’s pay of £86,000.It goes on to say her civil servant husband earns around £170,000,as she now earns £150,000 as Chancellor that’s a combined income of £320,000 providing figures are correct.Yet to lose the winter fuel allowance a pensioners income has to be only around £11,500 I believe.Added to this as pension credit is quoted as being widely unclaimed by those entitled to receive this means tested benefit means even more are missing out.As a former Citizens Advice volunteer it was a regular occurrence for people to say such things as ‘I’m not looking for charity’ and question if they were meant to have this or that benefit.
I will say it once again as I’ve done before unless you are left wing, woke or green the ordinary person is so far down Labour’s priorities we barely register on the Governments radar.
good luck to allAugust 8, 2024 at 15:31 #1704198Is the woke in the room with you right now?
August 8, 2024 at 16:44 #1704203Just remember Labour have got to find the money to pay the compensation because of the contaminated blood and postal workers scandals. A can that the Conservatives have kicked down the road for Labour to sort out.
August 8, 2024 at 17:24 #1704204My parents are slightly left wing, do a few things that might be considered green and they might even be woke (whatever that means). Perhaps they should write to the Chancellor and ask for their winter fuel allowance back.
August 8, 2024 at 18:40 #1704210There’s nothing to stop them finding out if they’re eligible for pension credit.
August 8, 2024 at 22:11 #1704233I was being somewhat facetious as I can’t imagine they are eligible and they don’t particularly need it but the idea that Labour only cares about ‘left wing, woke(?) or green’ people is clearly nonsense. How do we even know after just over a month?
August 9, 2024 at 12:25 #1704255I’m not judging Labour on being in office for a month but on their previous actions and pronouncements.
They have taken woke issues trans & identity ideology etc and turned them into defining problems for others with women being a particular target as regard single sex spaces as an example.Just recently the new education secretary has all but quashed free speech legislation which would have given protection to alternative views not shared by the woke group mindset where disagreement isn’t tolerated. My favourite writer George Orwell was very much into politics and perhaps more people should read his writing for a greater understanding of the harm done by restricting debate and freedom of speech.
The Blair government was responsible for the Horizon project and they knew there were problems with it before Labour left office,as far as the blood thing is concerned that has been kicked down the road by both major parties so to lay blame on the last government is unfair as they did finally acknowledge something needed to be done.
As regard Labour’s green intentions I merely point you in the direction of eco zealot Ed Miliband.
good luck to allAugust 10, 2024 at 21:02 #1704424The country is in a right two and eight , we’ll need to pay taxes to fix it , this isn’t difficult , this everything for nothing mentality has to stop , the start of this is teaching the kids in school about money , the need for pension etc
August 15, 2024 at 18:16 #1704648…. and the bandwagon rolls on with train drivers offered 14%.
Figures say this will take average earnings to £69,000
Union leaders say this is likely to be accepted, however also hinted like the junior doctors that this is not enough and are liable to return and ask for more next year!
Anyone want to guess what GP’s will demand or settle for?
good luck to allAugust 15, 2024 at 18:37 #1704650Health workers wages have been falling behind for years. Something had to be done. I was chatting to a pharmacist today and she said in recent years the government have been giving them more and more work but not paying them for it which is why so many are closing down. She said they lose £1 on every prescription they do. I no longer work for my GP but I wish I could find out what’s happening. The surgery I worked at closed down because they couldn’t afford to keep it open; we provided a very good, caring service. The government have also got to pay the postmasters and victims of the contaminated blood scandal.

August 15, 2024 at 20:07 #1704653Just remember all this has been caused by the Tories failure to keep wages in line
August 15, 2024 at 20:44 #1704657Whilst finding nice juicy contracts for their rich supporters.
August 17, 2024 at 17:58 #1704843Yes, “in real terms” overall figures show Labour spent a lot more under Blair and Brown on the NHS – at a time of a global boom. However, it must also be remembered when the banking crisis hit Britain, figures also show that (FACT) Brown had no option but to drastically cut the NHS budget in his final two years in office. Brown started the NHS cuts.
The Conservatives got in (first in coalition) and first had also to pay for that banking crisis, then another global slump, Covid (which alone was absolutely massive!) and Ukraine… all added on. So make no mistake, had Brown won his election against Cameron he’d have had no choice but to continue his own cutting of the NHS budget – just as the Conservatives had to.
Value Is EverythingAugust 17, 2024 at 18:58 #1704849Bet he wouldn’t have been handing out contracts to his rich mates, though…
