Although not known for moaning about jockeys I must say I was less than impressed with the ride Kirby gave Sweetheart Abbey 4.45 Kemp to day. On a filly that has won at 12f he dropped her out at the back in a very moderately paced race and was totally caught napping when the inevitable sprint came from his position she not only would have needed to be Usain Bolt and also in need of a pair of wings to find space. Never really put in the race with a chance
August 18, 2015 at 17:05 #1172846Not sure what Kirby wanted to do early without seeing the head on. Out ok, then quickly scrubbed along to seemingly get a fair early position. Then, whether squeezed or just outpaced or what (?) found himself shuffled back to the rear. From that point tbh Kentdougal, can’t see that Kirby could do anything else. Sitting last with the winner Saumur half a length in front on his outside, was he supposed to pull back further to go around the whole field? With Saumur doing so well from a similar posi it’s difficult for me to think Sweetheart Abbey would’ve done much better with a different ride. Kirby was trying to get a run up the straight. Might have done a bit better with a stronger pace, but (and this is important) is never raced any nearer than mid-div and often held up towards the back early. Unless the head-on shows something – seems a case of buyer beware with a hold up horse like Sweetheart Abbey around Kempton. As far as this horse is concerned – a race to ignore imo.
Value Is EverythingAugust 18, 2015 at 18:42 #1172916Ginge I agree as the race was run unlikely that she would have won but I think Kirby definitely pulled her back after a good start favourite didn’t get a great ride either although more sense in holding her up new to the trip and likely to have a fair turn of foot and then struggling for a run

It’s possible Kirby did not want to be in the front rank – being on a hold up horse – and that could be the reason appeared to take a pull or at least allow those upsides to pass him. I agree though, did look a bit odd. Yes, winner does have more speed and Sweetheart Abbey’s chance is more dependent on how fast leaders go. However, may be he’s one to keep an eye on, especially if there’s a market move in his favour.

Many years of Timeform subs. (before they give them away now, ratings etc.), those form terms will be with me as I slide down the conveyor belt – :-).
