2.50 Kelso – BARNEVELDER is a speculative choice as i feel he’s far too big a price at 16/1(may trade bigger on the exchanges)in a very poor race. He won very easily off a 7lb higher mark in Ireland(87) & was then slaughtered by the handicapper & ended up as high as 100. The second horse in that race was beaten a short head off a mark of 90. Probably neede his pipe opener last time out after a lay off & is now racing off a mark of 80. I think he could well spring a surprise at decent odds in either/both the win & place markets.
January 12, 2014 at 15:24 #464742I know,i know its not easy being the finest judge of horses, everyone wants an opinion but this morning I have had bloody Texts and e-mails asking me if this
Un de Sceaux
is a Champion hurdler. Obviously the 16/1 Ladbrokes are hanging onto will go if I say yes!!
I can categorically state that he has No chance whatsoever,None absolutely zero. For one,who the hell is ‘Denham Red’ a Sire who’s been around for about 15 yrs and sired nothing, the dam has sired nothing so we have no bearing on just what this fellow is bred for.Thats not the end of the world when assessing National Hunt horses though so I’ll go on ‘Looks and confirmation’.Does he look like a Champion Hurdler? Does ‘Peter Crouch’ look like a Pygmie? Simple answer again…..No!Un de Sceaux
is one gangly raw boned individual,he looks like a potential 3 mile Chaser and actually reminds me off old
Carvills hill
who I dont recall ever jumping a hurdle,a proper chaser though he was.No sorry again supporters of this horse but all this nonsense about how far he won yesterday is nothing but a load of Bollox,Paul Carberrys horse ran no race at all and has good chasing form so to use that as a yardstick is futile.I’d rather compare times and the clock clearly shows that 2m hurdling around Navan on soft ground is a test, you dont break 4mins for sure and
Un de Sceaux
clocked a rather dissapointing 4 mins 10secs carrying 11-6 so visually impressive that it was,it only confirms that the 2 opponents achieved nothing as the winner wasn’t tanking along like Ruby suggests. To support this the winner of the Maiden hurdle ran only 30 mins before over 10 hurdles and 2 miles again manages to clock 4 mins 12 secs, this horse is a year younger and carried 11-10 to win on the bridle too!! Now its not rocket science to conclude that at
levels there wouldn’t have been 2 lengths betweenUn de Sceaux
and the very average
Aklan
!Sorry again but that does not translate into Champion hurdle form and to be honest I doubt on faster ground he’d even bother to run at Cheltenham. No if this fellow wins the Champion hurdle I’ll have ‘Frankel’ tattooed down the length of my Cock……Well I’ll get ‘Frank’ on it anyway!
January 12, 2014 at 16:05 #464744Have you watched the races side by side Gord?
If you haven’t then I suggest you do, Aklan wouldn’t get near Un De Sceaux.

I love to dangle a carrot Tommy and you’ve bitten!! Poor comparison between
Aklan
and
Un de Sceaux
I know but none the less your horse has No chance in a Champion hurdle at Cheltenham. For the record the 5yo would have kept tabs with this ‘Pretender’ to the hurdling Crown for the first 3 hurdles but after junping the 4th your horse wound up the tempo to such effect he had an 8 sec lead jumping the 7th, a 7 sec lead jumping the 8th and 9th and an 8 sec lead jumping the last (3m 49)compared to (3m 57).It took your fellow 21 secs to get home from the last but only 13 secs for ‘Aklan’ which tells you how much ‘Un de Sceaux’ was eased.
January 12, 2014 at 20:50 #464765I like carrots!
Excellent and accurate post there, Akatara actually jumped one or two hurdles in front of the maidens if I’m right
No chance you say I’d have to disagree but he’s he’s very much an unknown to be fair. You’ll be very happy if he runs I think as he could help The Tent to settle!
January 12, 2014 at 21:37 #464768Tommy I’ll be shopping around for a price on ‘You know what’ for next years Arkle tomorrow and whilst I’m at it I shall be asking for prices on
Un de Sceaux
for the 2015 ‘Jewson’ too,if he progresses like he’s doing he will be a serious front running Chaser, you can tell the way he lollops over hurdles that a fence will actually encourage him to stretch.I maintain ground without at least some cut will inconvenience his fairly rounded action.Anything he does over hurdles is a bonus,if he does run in the Champion hurdle he’ll be leading to 2 out and fade into 5th beaten about 20 lengths by ‘One or the other’ but that will still be enough to suggest he’ll be different gravy Chasing.Next years Jewson winner Tommy, you heard it here first……..Not for the first time!
January 12, 2014 at 22:02 #464770Believe it or not Gord when I first put him up last July I was talking about him as an Arkle contender! Obviously they shelved chasing for a season to see how far he could go over hurdles but he has the size for fences no doubt.
Arkle – Un De Sceaux
Jewson – Annie Power
RSA – Faugheen (NAP NAP NAP)How’s that for you?

You are a good judge of a horse Tommy but you are getting carried away with this
Faugheen
.
January 12, 2014 at 22:26 #464774I could count the times I’ve got carried away with horses on one hand Gord and this ain’t one of ’em

Let me tell you this Tommy and its from someone who knows and someone you know who knows,
Faugheen
is a Cheltenham banker this year but he wont be running in the ‘Neptune’,Corals 4/1 fav incidentally. No he’s an Albert Bartlett good thing at 8/1 a plenty.
Briar Hill
will take the ‘Neptune’ route. This ‘Kings Palace’ Corals 4/1 fav wont get near
Faugheen
over 3m whilst hurdling.Trouble is as impressive a young hurdler he is he aint no Chaser in a million years,he’s what you call a small short coupled sort with no scope to jump a fence,he has a bad habit of throwing his head back too…….some engine though.TAPK knows you know!
January 12, 2014 at 23:46 #464781I think his raw speed (any he has plenty) is wasted over three miles, and I also think he’ll jump better going a faster pace. He could hardly be held last time over three and was still full of running but if he’s that keen over three at Cheltenham it’ll give the others a chance. I’d prefer to see him in the Neptune but I’ve a fair bit on him at 5/1 and 9/2 to win any race so as long as he makes it I’ll be happy because he’ll go off sub 2/1 wherever he goes.
I heard he jumped well in his point, although he did have a slight back injury at one stage I think which would ever so slightly temper my enthusiasm. I don’t see anything in him that makes me think he won’t take to fences.
Anyway, back to this year, have you backed him for the spud race?
January 13, 2014 at 02:33 #464784Two runners that interest me today.
12.15 Ling – Prince of Burma @ 7/2
All six runs over C&D have been off higher marks than his current 65. Has won here off 81 & been second three times off marks of 78, 75 & 75 respectively. To say he’s well in is an understatement!
3.30 Plump – Kind of Easy @ 9/1
Was a comfortable winner off this mark(114)over fences and his second behind Golden Chieftain reads well(who went on to win by 6l in a hcap hurdle off 129). Emma Lavelle has a good strike rate here & also on the occasions she teams up with Fehily.
Best of luck to all who play!
January 14, 2014 at 00:59 #464868One for today
3.40 Exeter – Triggerman @ 9/2
Third around this time last year in the rescheduled Welsh National off a mark of 130, he’ll take some beating tomorrow off a mark of 122 with the capable Thomas Cheesman claiming a further 10lbs. Prone to the odd error, if his jumping holds together. He looks the likely winner.
