I’m sure I must have visited those Silver Rings loos, but tbh they didn’t make the impression on me they evidently did on Drone as I can’t remember them!
I too will be checking them out on my return at some point.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"January 18, 2024 at 12:35 #1677712Just as well I had not got around to booking my tickets for the Aintree Thursday yet.
I have just received my 2024 RTV membership badge and a list of all the club days. Incredibly, the Thursday of the National meeting is one of the days. Assuming it is on the usual terms, that will mean RTV members are entitled to two free tickets for one of the best meetings of the year – an incredible offer.
Unfortunately booking is not open yet but I will be keeping an eye out. I expect it will be hugely popular.
January 18, 2024 at 12:39 #1677714I predict an above-average level of ticket touting outside the gate for this fixture.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"January 18, 2024 at 12:42 #1677717I expect so, ID. There are usually dozens of touts there anyway, so it is likely to be worse now.
January 18, 2024 at 12:47 #1677718I often wonder who goes to all the effort of travelling to and potentially getting a bit dressed up for these meetings without a ticket, leaving themselves at the mercy of touts. It must be worth the touts’ while or else they wouldn’t do it but it sounds bonkers to me unless you live round the corner or something. It’s not that hard to get a ticket, I booked Cheltenham months ago.
January 18, 2024 at 14:43 #1677737I’ve often thought this too – but it suits a certain kind of personality, often the “Jack The Lad” who likes to think he’s a bit of a wide boy and that it’s cool to “blag” a ticket off a tout.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"January 25, 2024 at 07:35 #1678432On checking the Levy Board site, there were 912 people in attendance at Doncaster when I was there on 10th January. That was an increase of 25 on the same card in 2023.
I expect Doncaster makes plenty of money from its weekend and evening fixtures and of course from the St Leger festival. It can afford one or two meetings where the track is almost empty and it will still receive the media rights payments.
February 21, 2024 at 18:11 #1682003I had an enjoyable afternoon at Ludlow today, with free admission courtesy of RTV. It is one of the loveliest tracks in England. A visit is highly recommended.
The town is very pleasant as well, with its medieval castle, the beautiful St Laurence’s Church and a few quality pubs for the beer drinkers amongst us.
February 21, 2024 at 19:19 #1682012That sounds great CAS, its one Id like to visit one day. Is there a decent rail connection (if theres a station)?.
February 21, 2024 at 19:46 #1682018Ludlow used to have three Michelin-starred restaurants, twenty-odd years ago. Quite remarkable for a small provincial town.
February 21, 2024 at 20:16 #1682025There is a small railway station in Ludlow. A free shuttle bus operates between the station and the racecourse. It does three trips, the first being 90 minutes before the opening race.
After racing it does three more trips back to the station. The first one is meant to be 30 minutes after the last race but the driver usually decides to depart once the bus is full.
February 21, 2024 at 23:14 #1682037I’ve only ever been to Ludlow the once – there is a story attached to it, but this is about CAS, not me.
Delighted to hear you had a good day there, CAS!

February 22, 2024 at 07:35 #1682047“Sounds like Ludlow is winning”.
Yes, it is. It does a lot of things right. Even down to no intrusive bag searches on entry, which meant I needn’t have bothered concealing the cheese I had bought at the excellent cheese shop in the town into the inner pockets of my coat!
There is a restaurant in the Premier Enclosure selling a choice of hot food. There are two cafes in Tatts – one in the main stand and one in the middle of the course (Ludlow is one of only three tracks in the country where the paddock is located inside the racing circuit). Both offered a good choice at fair prices.
Beer drinkers will like how the bar is run by the local Ludlow Brewery. It offers three of its cask beers (it is unusual to find one such beer on most racecourses). A pint of its beer was only £5 (£6 but £1 is returned if you take your glass back). That must be about the cheapest pint on any racecourse. More tracks should support local businesses.
From a racing point of view, I thought it was good for a midweek fixture towards the end of February. Reasonable field sizes and decent betting. I liked how you could stand quite close to the water jump.
And picking up on a theme that emerged after I visited Doncaster last month: the men’s room in the main stand had some very impressive urinals that were a sight to behold!
The only false note was a bookmaker who clearly advertised 1/4 odds on his board and ticket but only paid me at 1/5 odds – but that is not Ludlow Racecourse’s fault.

I think we need to read about it, ID.
February 22, 2024 at 08:43 #1682053Sounds excellent all round I’d say, right down to the cheese. Having the local brewery run the bar is a great idea given that the demographics of ale drinkers and those who attend smaller midweek meetings must have a large overlap. I would imagine most, if not all, similar courses have a good brewery nearby.
February 22, 2024 at 09:14 #1682059I might be wrong but I think Ludlow is an independent course and presumably has more scope for negotiating a local deal. The likes of the Jockey Club and ARC are presumably only interested in dealing with large suppliers for their tracks.
The Ludlow Brewery also has a tap room near to the railway station. Plenty of racegoers were having a pint or two in there yesterday while waiting for the bus to the track. It was a shame it closed at 5pm and missed the post racing crowd but I assume it can only get a licence to that time.
