Does anyone know the reason for the 9 1/2 Furlong race at Kempton last night, as far as I know its the first race over this distance at Kempton?
Will they be any more as it plays havoc with my speed figures!

Introduced last year when the same race was staged as a qualifying event for the Kentucky Derby. I think they wanted to run that as a 9F race, like most of the big trial races in the US, but that would have put the start too close to the first turn.

March 25, 2010 at 14:07 #285517The equivalent race has been run twice before, as AP says last year as a Kentucky Derby trial but also in 2008 when won by Campanologist. The 2 previous runnings however were over 9f so don’t really know why a different distance was used this time around.

I checked on the racing admin website to see if there was any explanation on there and found nothing about Kempton, but there is an announcement about Chester than Alan1 is going to hate.
They are introducing races over 5F 110yds, and over 1M 6F and 91 yds!
