Seriously? It’s been a while since I went to the track, and it’s apparent I could no longer afford it.
What is the entrance fee to Santa Anita? Longchamp? Pennies by comparison
In actual fact, my last raceday, I paid £19 to get into the ‘Fosters’ at the Cheltenham Festival. A bargain vs a day of horses squelching around in a bog in N Yorks

That’s quite steep. Down Royal is £25 for the big day- for that you get the grade 1 3 mile chase, the grade 2 race for 2nd season chasers, and Gordy’s young hotshots.

I once paid $2 to get in to Belmont Park. I expect you could get in to Santa Anita fairly cheaply.

Countries with tote monopolies have cheaper admission. The down side is less choice for betting and being ripped off by the huge tote take outs, partly to pay for cheap admission.

Having said that, £36 is steep for a card with no Grade 1. It is about that price for Tatts in Aintree on the Thursday of the National meeting, which has four Grade 1s and the Foxhunters over the National fences.

It’s clearly had an affect on the turnout as well.

The weather won’t have done them any favours but you can see from the tv pictures that the stands are quiet and as they come round the bend after the winning post the coach parks are virtually empty.

It’s simple isn’t it, people simply won’t go if they feel they’re being ripped off!

Yeah, I thought that, they have to rethink their priorities. Would they rather have 1200 old boys in flat caps paying outrageous prices at the turnstiles to satisfy their gambling fix, or entire families spending on food, betting and telling people what a great day they had?
Racing is pricing itself out of the market, the problem goes all the way back to the ‘GG tracks’ debacle. Running racing purely as a money making exercise rather than a national institution :negative:
The problem is exaggerated to the n’th degree at meetings like a January day at Lingfield a/w with about 250 people paying £25+ to watch Grade 5 dross

Went to Longchamp a few years ago for the Arc and, from memory got in free because I was wearing a hat. Think I had a free race card. Shuttle bus to the track was free. I’m sure things have changed now but, at the time it put English racing to shame. Used to get in free at Punchestown if we bought the local newspaper. These days we just go to Kelso with a £12 early bird ticket with the added bonus that we can take the dog with us! Don’t think we’ll be going to Wetherby or Cheltenham in the future.

As long as there are people with more money than sense, these ridiculous entry charges will continue.

I expect it was £7 for a pint as well.

I went to Longchamp the other Saturday and it cost £4.34 admission. We also had two coffees and a ham and cheese sandwich (basically a small loaf of bread) for not much. As as Moehat mentioned, they also provide a shuttle bus from the metro to the racecourse on certain days.

Woodbine is free (and free parking)………even for Group 1 races.

Kyoto was 500 yen (£2.70) on Shuka Sho day.
    Happy Valley was free.

“I expect it was £7 for a pint as well”

And a fiver for a ham sandwich. The concessions at tracks are eyewateringly expensive. What’s the price of a race card nowadays? £4?
It’s a real pity Towcester is gone, they had the right idea, bums on seats is everything. Tracks should do free entry days on Bank Holidays, the punters would swarm the place

    Never drank alcohol when betting.
Going Racing I took either orange juice or water.
I remember Goodwood (or was it Newbury? Or both?) didn’t let you take your own grub into the racecourse.
Always took home made sandwiches for lunch and ate them in the car park.
However, occasionally I didn’t have time.
So I smuggled them in using my binocular case, with a small bottle in my pocket.
Was found out once. When there was royalty coming they inspected all bags and binns cases.
He didn’t seem to know the rules and (with a raised eyebrow) waved me through.
A real stick in the mud, me.

No need to pay for anything at the races.

I’ve got my ticket for a seat in the Guinness Stand and parking paid for
Cheltenham on Gold Cup Day 2024, but it was all paid for with points from
Rewards4Racing. You get points for betting with certain bookies, Bet365,
Betfair and Betfred. Every time we order a curry, chinese or burger I go
through RFR 1st and they put you through where you want to purchase anything.
That goes for a pile of things, holidays, clothing car and house insurance and
a load more. It doesn’t cost anything to join so there’s not much point in not
joining. They don’t deal with buying, they simply put you through to where you
want to go. It’s amazing how much the points mount up without parting with a penny.
I hadn’t used any of the points since Cheltenham Gold Cup Day at the start of the
pandemic and I didn’t go last year as I wasn’t quite up to the mark. I’ve still
got 50,942 points lying, which equates to £509. Honest.

“Evening Graham Not Graham? Logout YOU HAVE 50,942 POINTS IN YOUR ACCOUNT”

    What’s not to like.
