A rather bizarre race.
Ocean Ruler was first past the post, beating odds on favourite Homeric into second, with Rikona back in third in a desperately close three way photo finish.
Ocean Ruler was then disqualified for drifting across the track and compromising the chance of Rikona, meaning Homeric (which suffered no interference) was promoted to first.
Then Rab Havlin was given a two day ban for using his whip above the permitted number on Homeric.
It all meant the winner was second past the post, got the race in the stewards room despite being beaten fair and square and its jockey broke the rules!
No problem with the stewards decision but I think Homeric can be filed under “lucky”.
Yes, the commentators on SSR mentioned that race.
Rikona’s connections must be cursing their luck. Beaten a short head and a nose despite being carried half way across the track and still did not get the race in the stewards room. Almost certainly would have finished in front of the winner with a clear run.
One of the runners sustained an injury in the straight on the first circuit. It could not be moved off the track so the other runners had to be stopped via a flag being waved.
They were only stopped as they were approaching the home straight. I have to wonder if it was possible to stop them earlier but at least they did all stop.
Cherokee Dance suffered a serious injury. They put a cast on her so perhaps explains why she was still on the course. Fingers crossed she can be saved.
