Well done Jac,
I thought Manaafidh was going to pass but your horse was having none of it.Blackbeard to conquer the World
August 23, 2015 at 08:15 #1181159Sorry Nathan..Manaafidh ran a great race, both our Naps running head to head but First Selection had the edge from the front.
Just fell for this horse the moment I set eyes on him, such a good looker and he’s progressing really well. I’m convinced he would have been a shock 20/1 winner of the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot if he hadn’t had been so badly hampered, the only race in his career so far that he hasn’t won.
Simon Crisford has a really good colt to set him up as a trainer in his first season.Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...August 23, 2015 at 14:51 #1181492Shogun was absolutely useless today and looked more like he did the first time he ran. He was away quite well today but never looked like he was travelling as well as Now Or Never was in front. It was soon clear his race was run and he looks wildly overrated by O’Brien on what he showed here.
Herald The Dawn stayed on best to cut down Now Or Never and build on the promising win he had recorded previously.
The second time blinkers are always a concern regarding whether they work again and Shogun looks far from straight forward. I really felt he would have progressed today. Perhaps the ground went against him, the commentator made the point that he was unproven on it but I think he is one to avoid now.
The good thing with a fun pick at 33/1 is that you can back for low stakes and have plenty more bullets for the race. Shogun’s ticket gets riddled by the Shotgun and we’ll reload for the Guineas another day. O’Brien surely has better ones he could have run in this today, if he hasn’t it’s time to press the panic button.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
August 23, 2015 at 22:30 #1181688Just looked at Special Season’s winning debut at Sandown on Friday. Wow, that was a searing turn of foot!
One of the things I love about 2YO races is when a newcomer makes a spectacular winning debut and triumphs by a wide margin. Just can’t get enough of them!
August 24, 2015 at 09:00 #1181913Coolmore looks a lovely horse with tons of improvement to come.
Joey was very easy on her and it was a nice introduction, definitely a Oaks sort and she reminded me of Australia on debut although at least Joey got her out the stalls.
The price was crazy.Oh yes, that race will live with me. Watching Joseph coming out of the gates that day was somewhat akin to looking at Eric Pickles trying to get through tight saloon doors to get out of a wild west saloon bar. Even Australia’s “Natural Speed” that he had shown from day 1, couldn’t get him out of trouble.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Rob, Special Season has appeared in some lists for the 2000 Guineas. All three firms have him at 25/1 for the Newmarket Classic.
The Racing Post gave him a rating of 95 and a topspeed figure of 90, both very taking figures for a first time runner.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Simon Crisford has a really good colt to set him up as a trainer in his first season.First Selection has some fancy entries in the Royal Lodge and Racing Post Trophy and like you say his only setback came in the Coventry with a not clear run. Manaafidh could still progress but being by Zebedee I’m not overly keen on that front.

I readily prefer British-trained horses to Irish ones and always get stoked with the England vs Ireland rivalry (particularly at Cheltenham). The last Irish horse who I had a true penchant for was Sea The Stars but I do like Gleneagles too.
August 26, 2015 at 16:38 #1183733Surely it’s time for a rethink with Shalaa and the 2000 Guineas?
Gosden’s colt is rated 120 by the official handicapper, 119 by the Racing Post and 123p by Timeform.
In case anyone is concerned that I am providing information on Timeform ratings that should be privy only to subscribers, please rest assured that the figure was taken from their Facebook page and it is in the public domain. I do not subscribe to Timeform and can only access information that is already in the public domain. Any figures I quote here are on the internet somewhere and I am just posting them for information purposes to try to help forum readers.
Anyway, John Gosden seemed to state that Shalaa will go to the Commonwealth Cup as his 3yo target, seemingly ruling out the Guineas. That is fair enough if they think he is only a sprinter and they can circumvent the Tiggy Wiggy/Ivawood situation, where both horses tilted at the Guineas first and failed, then seemed to come up short at shorter as well.
Watching Shalaa in the Prix Morny, it was very soft ground and he comes near the lead settling well and probably just slightly headed by Hannon’s horse for most of the race. Once Frankie gives him the office he starts to get the better of it gradually at first, before finishing much the more strongly of the two runners to come home comfortably, not looking to tire at all.
Based on this race, he looks like he would get 7f on better ground this year, as long as he settles well early. I am not sure you want to try to restrain a horse’s natural speed if he possesses it but front running off a sensible pace it would be interesting to find where his stamina limitation actually lies.
I reckon he’s probably got a lot more to recommend him for a tilt at the 2000G than Ivawood had and he should be favourite if we were sure he is actually likely to run there.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
August 27, 2015 at 21:44 #11844884 two year old races at Newmarket tomorrow.
If you are going Jac, try and get a photo of Hannon’s Tabarrak.
Apparently he is the best looking two year old in the yard. 20/1 early price for tomorrow and Hanagan is on Gosden’s with race experience.Blackbeard to conquer the World

Promising Run in the 2.00pm with Cacica (EW)
In the 2.30 going for the unraced Blue Moon Rising trained by Michael Bell
3.00 it has to be Dubai’s Secret
and the 3.40 it looks like Gosden will take this with Tashweeq as you say he has race experience and he’ll like the ground. Tabarrak has a great chance if he runs as good as they say he looks and I’ll definitely get a shot of him and post it here over the weekend.(Stingy old Paddy Power only have him at 12/1 )
Good luck
