A hat trick of favourites beaten as Sanus Per Aquam couldn’t cope with Aidan O Brien’s Deauville.

I expected Sanus Per Aquam would win tonight and was disappointed that he didn’t manage to see O Brien’s heavy ground winner off. However, I always saw him as a resolute galloper, rather than a turn of foot horse and I expected to see him tackle a mile sooner rather than later. For me he is a Derby type and not a Guineas horse. I would say his Guineas hopes were seriously holed below the waterline this evening.

Matt Chapman is officially “The Kiddie” now, after raving about Deauville after his debut success. I take my hat off to Chappers for foreseeing the next “This is the best colt I have ever trained” from the O’Brien yard.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

I’ve not seen any action of tonight’s racing but the Bolger horse Sanus Per Aquam struck me last time out as a middle distance horse rather than a guineas type so I’m not overly suprised he got beat here as like you say Steve he would want a gallop rather than a sprint.

Deaville outstayed sans it would seem so doubt with the two horses pedigree there is any reason to believe the form will be reversed. Both looked Derby rather than guineas types. Joseph obrien handled Alice springs with kid gloves so expect a lot of improvement in her next race. The first two looked high class fillies.

I’ve been waiting for Manaafidh since winning on debut. Owner Mr Hamdan Al Maktoum on the whole likes his horses not having too much of a hard time first time out and this one looked green enough and would of hit a decent price in-running with the jockey rowing along a fair way out but the horse responded well and ended up winning on the line. The Winkfield stakes is a race Hannon targets for his better ones with Toronado and Peacock :rose: taking the race in. With Manaafidh needing every yard of the Newmarket race provided he takes to the going the 7f will feel much longer which will suit him I think even with him being a Zebedee. Platitude looks decent winning his only one effort well after rearing in the stalls and could turn out good has a 33/1 quote for the Derby but Stoute is more renown for doing better with the older horses. Sixth Sense has already run 100 times for Johnston and is pretty consistent enough and could get an easy lead so Manaafidh will have to be ready and this should tell us more about him.

Saw Manaafidh win at Newmarket Nathan and think he will go on soft ok, if you do him don’t forget that Muntazah is running in the 1.55 at Newmarket also. He is my banker tomorrow at Newmarket along with Great Page in the 2.05 at Ascot.

    2yo Trixie Alert :mail:

    Ascot 1.30 .. Manaafidh
    Nmkt 1.55 … Muntazah
    Ascot 2.05 .. Great Page
(Richard Hannon thinks she will love the softened ground tomorrow) :good:

The worse thing about it was I had originally left Manaafidh out of Bob’s comp but talked myself into picking him but in doing so moved Besharah from the nap position and took out Wee Jean……D’OH

It was a day of D’oh’s Nathan, my trixie went down like a lead balloon..sorry if you did it
Felt so sorry for Brian Ellison today with TNT and Balty Boys both filling runner up position after looking sure fire winners.
I would draw a line under Manaafidh’s run today the ground was sticky and he didn’t get into the race and Muntazah was eased in his race at Newmarket after it was clear he was not enjoying the ground. Both sure fire winners NTO.
Forgot what a beautiful horse Sixth Sense is and he obviously loved the conditions.
    Roll on Goodwood. :good: Jac

Shalaa out to prove himself today as one of John Gosden’s best 2yo’s.
Hoping we will see what he is truly capable off against good class rivals.
His July Stakes form has been already been franked by Sixth Sense winning last Saturday and Nisser is so much better than the Cl.5 at Windsor that he won LTO.
Log Out Island is beautifully bred but hasn’t proved himself yet over 6 furlongs and Steady Pace will have to improve no end to reverse July Stakes placings with Shalaa. Looking forward to seeing him again. :good:

An impressive win by Shalaa and he probably warrants being favourite for the 2000 Guineas but it seems they have accepted he is a sprinter and his keen style would make it hard to pull off an all the way Guineas win a la Frankel.

With Gosden indicating that the Commonwealth Cup is the target, quotes of 12/1 for Newmarket look suicidal punting and I wouldn’t back him at all for that race given the trainer’s statements. This is a move to be applauded from the much maligned John Gosden, because you could bet your bottom Euro that Aidan O’ Brien would have trotted out the usual “All races are open to him, he could go anywhere, the lads will decide in due course” had one of his won the same race, leaving ante-post punters no further on about the future target.

The 8/1 quote for the Commonwealth Cup looks good to me. I will be surprised if there is a better looking prospect for that race to emerge this year and numerous potential candidates will be drawn to the Guineas like moths to a flame, as Ivawood and Tiggy Wiggy were this year, with the fairly inevitable results of failing at both disciplines. I would back Shalaa at 8/1 for sure.

The Royal Ascot colts haven’t really held up the form. Since Log Out Island and King Of Rooks went head to head in the Norfolk and set it up for Waterloo Bridge, their form has tumbled like an unstable Jenga block on a shoogly table during an earthquake. At the moment there isn’t anything I would back with any degree of confidence at all for the 2000 Guineas. I know the O’Brien team were shocked when Shogun failed on his debut but he made no mistake second time up when sporting blinkers. Apparently they may leave them off next time he runs and he looks a horse who will improve a lot over the winter and would be a token selection at ante-post odds of 33/1 for me, given that I expect him to step up in grade next time and move up the 2000 G leaderboard, which I believe has quite a bit of dross and no-hopers in it at the moment.

    Shogun 2000 Guineas 33/1

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Shalaa currently 20/1 (Paddy Power) for the 2000 Guineas and I haven’t felt this confident about a horse since Dawn Approach so it’s going to be something to look forward to over the cold winter months, through the Grand National betting frenzy and Cheltenham Festival and then, the return of the flat, back to the Rowley Mile Newmarket a course where Shalaa has already proved himself.
Shogun looks value at 33/1 Steve but I’m not lucky with AOB’s horses ante post and there must be just a slight worry about a 2yo needing blinkers to put him right. but as you say they may be off next time.
My each way in the 2000 Guineas is with Birchwood also 33/1 who I think should have won easily on Tuesday but for being boxed in.
I’m not a great Ante Post punter but Shalaa owes me nothing so I have invested some of my winnings on his 3yo career which at this moment in time is looking rosy.
Good luck Steve lets hope our speculations pay dividends B-)

    MONARCH.

Shogun is a full brother to this year’s Oaks winner Qualify, so you would be pretty hopeful on that score Darren. The step up to the Oaks trip seemed to help her form take a big leap upwards from her efforts over a mile earlier in the season.

The Dam Perihelion ran in the Irish Cesarewitch over 2 miles and her best run probably came when second in the Park Hill at 66/1, over the St Leger trip on soft ground.

Shogun is entered in the Gimcrack but that doesn’t look like the direction I would be putting him in if he was my horse. He’s run twice over 7f and hardly seems crying out to be dropped in trip into a race that tends not to be a pointer to the classics anyway.

The Derby is a long way off and I feel there are many more to come from the woodwork for that race. To me the Guineas looked much more like a market populated by failures and no-hopers and to my eyes Shogun looked a better bet for that race at 33/1, than for Epsom at exactly the same odds. It is worth recalling that this year’s Derby 1-2-3 did not make their debuts until 29th October, 27th December and 4th October last year.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Godolphin were supposed to have a good one at Newmarket this evening.

Confident Kid, a half million guineas son of Dubawi made his debut in an ordinary enough maiden and was well touted. One of the top market movers of the day and sent off 8/11 Favourite, he tailed in 6th of the 7 runners, some 13 lengths behind the winner.

Call bookies the scum of the earth if you want but taking free money from fools backing odds-on unraced horses is something that must be hard to resist for anybody but the most saintly amongst us. FOBT anyone?

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

    Agreed with Confident Kid Steve.
Afraid the public are a bit sheep like when it comes to a Newmarket Nights meeting, I believe the Kaiser Chiefs are there performing after racing so not many professionals like yourself stalking the bookies ;-) for a price on that one.
Confident Kid in the same ownership as Al Kazeem so I would keep him in your sights as he could well need a couple of races to put him straight before dotting up around 5/1 later in the season. B-)
