I am something of a fan as a punter of racing “Between The Flags” as it is sometimes referred to and while I am unsure which folder (if any) it should be in I am posting a copy of the provisional fixture list for anyone who might be interested.
If, like me, you like your NH and tire of seeing increasing numbers of Hurdle races and fewer (or none at all, as at Newton Abbot tomorrow) Chases then if you’ve never tried it you might enjoy it.
The customer service concept is a bit variable among the volunteers who man it, but there are plusses.
It’s relatively cheap admission, there are no handicaps so backing winners is easier, and while I’m not saying every single runner is always trying for its life, it is generally far straighter than low-grade racing under rules and on the Flat.
You’re also guaranteed a minimum of six Chases and races often divide.
Anyway, here are the dates and venues – enjoy!

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 25, 2021 at 18:45 #1551983Long-time TRFer Graysonscolumn (Jeremy Grayson) who rarely posts now is a ptp aficionado, perhaps you remember him. That list is sure to get his juices flowing so it would be nice to think it might stir him to post again, as he’s one of TRF’s better wordsmiths
Despite steeplechasing being my favourite racing under Rules I’ve never ‘got into’ ptp, though have been to Easingwold a couple of times. Askham Bryan is on my doorstep so really should get my arse up there
July 25, 2021 at 18:50 #1551985Is Buckfastleigh still run on the site of the old racecourse?
July 25, 2021 at 18:59 #1551987Remember him?
I know him!
He’s been to my house!
Actually, I don’t know Jeremy well, but he’s one of those disarmingly really nice genuine guys who everyone takes to.
He basically gave me a call from out of the blue once and said he was passing and could he drop by for coffee?
Top bloke and knows point-to-point inside out, the people as well as the horses.
Yes, Buckfastleigh is still on the old NH site though they race left handed nowadays.
Lovely venue IMO and of course near Buckfast Abbey and those geezer monks who sell booze and take plastic!

I would definitely recommend a trip to a PTP meeting for any NH supporters.
Unfortunately Balcormo Mains announced they were closing for good last year and transferring their fixture to Overton. So my local meeting is now 61 miles away. And there are now just three courses in the whole of Scotland with the other two in the borders.

Like how Wexford changed direction, which means the main stand is near the entrance to the home straight and the winning post is the best part of two furlongs away. A track where you really need the big screen.
July 25, 2021 at 22:41 #1552006Yes, at Buckfastleigh the (admittedly dilapidated and totally unusable anyway) stand is situated near what is now the second last after they turn for home.
There are plenty down that way who think it was a mistake making the switch.
I have only seen racing there left-handed – which seemed fine to me apart from them going out of view temporarily in the dip between two out and the last – so cannot offer an informed opinion.

I backed my first winner at the old one……….my memory tells me it was Three Socks……….a shilling to win!!! No idea what year it was, it was that long ago.

My first £50 bet was at a Radnor & West Hereford PtP meeting and my first £100 was at another on Senator Of Rome at Chaddesley in the Lady Dudley Cup. To me he was a certainty, the bet was really whether he’d stay up. Coasting along…….and unseated!!!!

Used to love PtP’s, out pretty much every Saturday during the season. I believe it’s tightened up now, but there are some good stories around from yesteryear.
I’d recommend it to anybody for a day out, just go with an open mind and embrace it…..and hope for a dry day.
July 26, 2021 at 07:33 #1552019I have been to the new Knightwick, thought it was an excellent new venue and really enjoyed my day out there.

Shame that Black Forest Lodge is no more. Not a huge follower of P to P though, the only other one I used to visit was near Taunton many years ago. I liked the fact that the admission charge was by vehicle rather than the number of people. So you could squeeze five or six in a car and get the lot in for a tenner or not much more, from memory.
July 27, 2021 at 08:54 #1552117Thanks for this list, Ian. I’ve not been to a p2p fixture before but have always had it in the back of my mind. With the fixture list i can hopefully plan trips to Alnwick, Hexham and Tranwell this coming winter/spring.
July 28, 2021 at 19:43 #1552411I thought Alnwick used to have a meeting round Easter time? We might actually get to one of theirs if and when we start venturing out into the big wide world again. The only time we ever went to one there we stood next to Tony Dobbin not realising why he was there. Obviously stepping out with Rose at the time. He rescued us from being trampled on by a loose horse that made for a gap in the fence near to where we were standing. Then the sea fret came down and we didn’t see much else. The only other PtP we’ve been to is Garthorpe where Martin from t’other place showed us around. Oh and Flagg. Now that was at Easter and I wish I remembered more about it now that it is no more. It was a long time ago.

Martin used to post on this forum as well and has very good knowledge of the PtP scene, as does Jezza
Think Martin posted as Irish Stamp?
