I think it will take a good one to beat Penhill this year, and I can see a similar campaign this time around.

Not a race I go mad in, but there’s normally a few nuggets in there during the build up, and definitely an interesting race for Ante-Posts.

Only three catching my eye at the moment, and parted with cash on a pair of them.

Don’t laugh, but I do like Aspen Colorado. I thought he was highly promising as a Novice Hurdler, but the wheels came off over fences. He’s thriving though for the switch to Jonjo’s, as well as a return to timber. Miles to go yet, but he travelled really well, and thought him worth chancing at 110’s to 120’s. I think he’d have a life chance in the Stayers Hurdle at Haydock.

I think Champagne Classic is going over fences, and he’s risky enough off of a layoff. The 25’s doesn’t appeal right now, but I chanced 150’s to 160’s.

The 33’s for Sam Spinner does appeal. I haven’t seen confirmation of plans, and he could go fences, but if kept down this route, that price looks wrong off of the back of his Ascot win. I haven’t bet him yet, but at that price, tempted to add him to an Antepost perm.

I’d love to see Faugheen run here. I have always thought of him as a stayer, even when winning the top 2 mile races. Willie apparently will start him with the CH in mind but they can always change their mind.

Nope; they’ve ruled the CH out for him. He will either come here or go Novice Chasing and they’re leaning towards here

I agree with you, I expect we’ll see very little of Penhill before turning up at the festival in March, and definitely the one to beat!

    I must have missed heard.
Happy Days if he runs here

Sutton Place very interesting for this, with him having an entry in The Hatton’s Grace.

If Faugheen stays sound and it sounds like he will stay over hurdles, his beating of Penhill must read very well here. Penhill may have bounced, but Faugheen was off the back of a poor run in the champion. Can see him going off a short priced favourite if they keep him to staying trips. Penhill won pretty cosily last year, and I know you can’t read literal lines of form, but if you did, doesn’t he win this by at least six lengths?
He would be my banker of the meeting if he rocks up in this.
It’s a long way away, and anything can happen but I’ll be whacking him in every multi at 5/1…6/1….and will be topping up regularly on the singles..

Way way too many ‘if’s’ to be banker material. If he stays sound. If he goes there. If Penhill bounced. If an 11 year old can win the stayers. If his injury problems don’t come back. On a personal note I’d roar him home were he to do it but I’d have a serious think about a double figure price let alone 5/1.

Call Me Lord and Scarpeta are my long-term fancies for this. Probably not a race to touch until NRNB. Apple’s Jade would win this if turning up (and having a prep run within 28 days of the festival). Can’t have the fragile trio of Thistlecrack/Faugheen/Penhill which head the betting. I wouldn’t take 10/1 they all make Cheltenham let alone all contest the Stayers.

TKF, Call Me Lord is interesting alright, if they can tweak a few things with his jumping and keenness. The left handed thing as well would obviously make him more of a wait and see selection, but it’s a good shout.

Scarpeta too, if he can jump better.

I wouldn’t punt Faugheen right now but i’d love him to win this.

Another i will throw into the ring is Paisley Park, only raced 6 times in his life and that last run was very taking…i wouldn’t be surprised if he makes Sam Spinner type improvement this year- albeit that didn’t end up being enough!

I haven’t put any money down on this yet. I too would love to see Faugheen romp home in this but at this stage I would have to agree with those throwing caution to the wind about his price. I am keeping my ear close to the ground to see which way Jessica Harrington is going with Supasundae: Champion or Stayers. On good to soft ground or better I would like to see him over the 3m trip and 12-1 seems a more attractive price. He’s a good age and went really close on ground that clearly didn’t suit him for the 3m trip. The question is: at which race will they target him?

CNC, for me, last years race was run in the way most likely for him to win, slow and fast at the finish….obviously as you say the ground wasn’t ideal. For me, it is very hard to say, i think Power wants a go at the Champion, but if he gets put in his place a few times, he might not get a choice.

I think that’s probably the last time we see Faugheen tackle 2m again. Yes, he was beaten by a race fit horse in Sharjah but a Faugheen of old, even on his seasonal debut, would have romped home. Now the decision has been taken to stay over hurdles I think the Stayers Hurdle will definitely be the target now.

ps It makes Samcro’s second on his seasonal debut, beating Sharjah into third, seem somewhat better form now.

After showing everyone once again he has lost his speed for 2 miles, Faugheen certain to step up in trip now. After losing out to Sharjah his price has doubled for this race which in my opinion is fantastic considering he doesn’t have the speed for 2 miles anymore and his price has doubled!
Ruby said exactly the same after the champion hurdle and then goes on to thrash the world hurdle winner Penhill over 3 miles.
I know we take a chance on every single horse turning up at cheltenham, or backing anything ante post has risks attached, but am I the only to see what Faugheen did to Penhill when stepped up to three miles? If he doesn’t make it. he doesn’t make it, but Faugheen double the price of Penhill?? IF, and it’s a big IF that ANY horse turns up fit for cheltenham, then this price is absolutely huge. This is a cheltenham 2019 World Hurdle thread, so I am putting my neck on the line and saying the 12/1 right now for this will not last any longer than his next race. This is banker material for me, I’m sure I’m open to what’s already been said, but Penhill was impressive when winning the world hurdle, and Faugheen slaughtered him first time at 3 miles. I’m not one to go mad on ante post betting, but this price is too big to ignore. The kids might have to wit until March for their christmas presents!! ;-)

Only 1 horse since 1972 has won this older than 9.

It’s a strong stat, but records are there to be broken, and although not the force of old, Faugheen is no ordinary horse..

    Stats are stats
    Here’s one
No 9 year old has ran in the race with the ability of Faugheen.
