The forgotten race a bit this, and most of the main protagonists are from Ireland so far, in particular Getabird, Ballyward and my fancy Carter McKay from the Mullins yard. The latter hails from the Mullins yard and was backed as if defeat was out of the question on debut last month, and duly obliged. That form has just been boosted when Barry Connell’s Bakmaj sluiced in at Leapordstown, and it would be interested if he were entered up also. The form is nicely linked when Getabird annihilated a decent field at Fairyhouse as Imperial Way finished second in Bakmaj’s race. Ballyward also thrashed his field but the form wasn’t backed up fully when Drumconnor Lad was second next time out, but West Coast Time obliged in that race and is Joseph O’Brien’s main hope. Mullins’s other main bumper winner Blow by Blow is a potential in this race also, and brings the best form as he beat Moon Racer at Punchestown last April. He’s likely to go elsewhere though perhaps the Supremes or the Neptune.
It’s still early days in this market as one may pop up over the next few weeks, but Carter McKay is the one for me and you can still get 20s with Coral.
January 22, 2017 at 17:49 #1283347Joliff, good luck with Carter McKay.
A lifelong friend called me from Fairyhouse the day Getabird ran. He was over there on business and invited by the sponsors to the meeting.
He told me to back Getabird that day and for him to win the Bumper. I never bothered as he was odds on, but i put a £20 on him for the bumper @ 16’s before the race.
I was out with him over Christmas and he said that the whole course that day was talking about Getabird in the last. Apparently they got £900 on for Cheltenham @ 40’s between them.My friend had £50 on to win.
Just a bit of second hand info and please Please dont shoot the messenger.
January 22, 2017 at 19:58 #1283358I backed Getabird that day and he was impressive-I could never confidently back anything in the bumper and he looks a bit short now at about 5/1, so those odds are very good indeed. I may back him on the day in multiples if the vibes are still good but prefer the stablemate personally.
January 22, 2017 at 22:19 #1283377Yep agree totally. Probably things get over hyped. The race was the start of December and probably not even in the mind of connections. I see Getabird and CM are entered on Thursday in a bumper. Could be an interesting race that one.
January 22, 2017 at 23:38 #1283380Getabird – possibly from the trees he beat that day…
January 23, 2017 at 09:06 #1283396I agree Mark the form needs to be substantiated some more but Imperial Way was 2nd that day and has since finished 4th in a maiden Hurdle race and 2nd to Bakmaj.
One does ask though where are all the UK bumper horses? Nothing has really stood out yet…
January 23, 2017 at 09:24 #1283398Caltex in 3rd also came 3rd to another Mullins talking horse in Ballyward. Looks like those 3 for Team Mullins at the moment with more to come no doubt.
That last race at Gowran on Thursday looks like it will shake things up a bit.
January 23, 2017 at 14:37 #1283424I’ve taken a chance on Beyond The Clouds, and hope he goes Joliff, I was quite impressed with him at Musselburgh, thought he showed a fair turn of foot, though probably not enough to trouble the live ones who’ll cross The Irish Sea. I took the 60’s, and I’ll chip away at him, as I’d expect him to go way bigger before the entries are out at the end of February.
Not a race I go mad in too often, but I had a field day last year with Battleford at “big prices” (he ended up just as big on the day lol), and though the place money was nice, the win would have been awesome, it couldn’t have been closer.
Apart from that, I’ve had places here and there, but still waiting for that winner. I do like to try and side with one though, and it might as well be Beyond The Clouds.
If pushed on the Irish Challenge at this stage, the one that caught my eye the most was West Coast Time.
January 26, 2017 at 16:46 #1283880Laid off @ 5’s for a free bet at 11’s. Quite happy with that but i dont see Getabird winning to be honest.

Length clear of Getabird when coming down at the last. Sold to Colin Tizzard.

Horse is by King’s Theatre so pretty good chance it is owned by Jean Bishop. Did try to check on his website but it is absolutely shocking given that he is a leading trainer. And they say how ‘open’ he is. Well he might like to convey that impression to the press but I suspect it is a totally different story for the general public.
February 3, 2017 at 01:03 #1285423Any thoughts on Mullins’ mare Redhotfillypeppers? (great name) Was very impressive LTO but so far no clue as to where she will run. Currently trading at 27.0

Running today in a mares bumper.
Very highly regarded.
Owner has been riding her in races though which is enough to put me off.
If a decent jock was up for Cheltenham on her, I’d be tempted.
Not a race I get really involved with though tbh. Had ballyandy in a multi on the day last year but it’s really not my type of race. Very messy stuff.
February 11, 2017 at 13:38 #1286901Despite backing
West coast time 14/1
Ballyward 25/1
Carter mckay 25/1
All with the same bookmaker they just returned my £80 stake on getabird.Justice payout? Or mistake?
Diddnt expect thatFebruary 11, 2017 at 17:21 #1286976My bet on Carter McKay at 20s is looking pretty good now, won a shade cosily there against a decent horse who destroyed Drumconnor Lad the time before…
February 11, 2017 at 17:42 #1286977Ballyward for me
