At the moment, I do not believe the overall competitiveness/ability/potential of this season’s Stayers Hurdle is up to an average renewal (even if Annie Power turns up). But as I say, I believe Thistlecrack is already of Stayers Hurdle winning quality and probably more progress to come.

Hard to argue T’crack shouldn’t be market leader now, but there are cards to be played yet in this race. I still believe Kilcooley is a dark horse. Cole Harden gave T’crack 4lbs last time, and was not at peak fitness, though T’crack too would have come on for the race. But Cole Harden will relish decent ground at Cheltenham, is the reigning champ and is a year younger than T’crack. Arguably he is better value than today’s winner.

But I wouldn’t rule out the likes of Arctic Fire stepping up in trip for this. SDR ran no race today for whatever reason, and there are others whose hand remains to be shown. Another factor is T’crack’s size: big horses are harder to keep sound, and if I was backing him it would be NRNB with Skybet.
