Tongue tie is one possibility, another is the Hennessy was a shorter gap between runs than he’s had recently.
Value Is EverythingFebruary 22, 2015 at 13:34 #751854It begs the question as to what the hell went wrong with him in The Hennessey. Paul Nicholls blamed the ground at the time but his near three month absence since suggests something else was to blame.
He thinks it may have been the tongue tie which was absent yesterday.
The National’s always been the aim and not running till now has protected his handicap mark.
Deserves to be fav on yesterdays impressive win.
I’d agree with him being favourite. Fifth last year, where he jumped well and seemingly in better fettle now. I think he had ringworm in the build up to last year’s National as well.
This year he will be 10 lbs better in with last year’s winner Pineau De Re, 5lbs better in with runner up Balthazar King and 3 lbs better in with 4th Alvarado.
I’m happy to be sitting with 33/1 on him and I’ll leave the desperados to chase round for 5/1 Shutthefrontdoor come raceday.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
February 22, 2015 at 18:27 #751904Good price, Steve, and good luck with him. But he didn’t see it out last year and I doubt he will somehow find the necessary stamina between now and then.
It’ll be a race for sub-eleven-stoners again for many years, imo

Don’t know why steeplechasing but I remember you saying exactly the same thing about Hedgehunter. Not that it is a foregone conclusion Rocky Creek will win or go close, the National is too much of a lottery for me these days.
March 7, 2015 at 11:30 #806661Yeats, I’m sure you’re right, and I did say that, as it’s something I’ve believed for years. In Hedgehunter, I got it well wrong!
