I still want to see Mandaean. He’s the one I’ve been looking forward to and the one I’m most excited about. He’ll be in the Dante and I hope the proper Godolphin trainer has him good and ready.
Ernest Hemingway is one I’d like to make place claims for as well. As yet unmentioned by anyone one here, he’s won a maiden on the all weather(albeit a pretty poor looking one), he won it easily, and he seems pretty well bred for a Derby contender. He could well sneak in as a surprise package to run into a place.
Camelot looks the obvious contender, but there has to be value out there!
May 6, 2012 at 10:24 #403237There is he’s called Fencing…cracking trial for or horse who is being trained with other things in mind.
May 7, 2012 at 21:18 #403477Would still say Ernest Hemingway looks one to follow though. Hopefully we’ll see him in a Derby trial in the next 10 days(Derrinstown or Dante), and should he show well there, 25/1 looks pretty big.
May 7, 2012 at 21:41 #403480Following on from that I’ve just spotted that Wrote will be Derrinstown-bound, with Ernest Hemingway looking likely to head to the Dante. O’Brien was very coy over the way he worded it as well, either he’s just not that good or he’s keeping him under wraps

Either way, my 2 picks look like they’ll be battling it out at the Knavesmire…………..
May 8, 2012 at 17:23 #403567prices of close to evs about camelot at this stage, look nothing short of ludicrous. yes he’s bred by montjeu, so should be even better over further, but for me it was a far from vintage guineas.
the time wasn’t great, and he scrambled home by a head. hardly looks unbeatable at this stage, yet people are falling over themselves to already give him the triple crown.just because the 3 year old miling colts are so ordinary, far from ensures that the middle-distance horses will be the same.

There was a little bit of 33/1 on Betfair for a brief time on 20th April! His time was faster than standard despite the fact he had no opposition. The decision to drop him down in trip for the Dante implies that he is regarded as more than just a resolute galloper. His pedigree is from Hesmonds Stud with plenty of stamina.
May 10, 2012 at 01:04 #403725I’ve been having the odd fiver and tenner on Minimum Risk for the Derby at crazy prices so I have over 25,000 reasons to hope he hacks up in the Chester Vase

Looks to have no chance today but stranger things have happened and he is a very nice horse with a big future IMO
May 10, 2012 at 10:27 #403751Having backed
My second wager has been BONFIREso I really hope Mr Balding does not run the horse tomorrow and bottom him out prior to Epsom!
May 11, 2012 at 03:41 #403832Well that was a waste of 120 quid
May 13, 2012 at 02:00 #404035Must admit, I’m very much underwhelmed by the amount of comments on this thread. It’s the first year I’ve been around for the classics and I’m already getting bored! Do come along gents, let’s be having ya(or I’ll set Delia on you

TRF wise I mean!!!
May 13, 2012 at 04:33 #404040Jim is not a big talker. As soon as the ground dries up you will hear from him and Parish Hall.
May 13, 2012 at 08:12 #404044With no entry today or for the Dante what are the chances of Parish Hall coming to the Derby?
Only races left as far as I can see if he is to have a run first are the Irish 2000 Guineas where New Approach went or the Gallinule Stakes. However this year they are only a week before the Derby so they not really an option are they?
Also does anyone know what has happened with Swedish Sailor? He has not been entered for the Dante at the 5 day entry stage and has nowhere else to go as far as I can see. His price on Betfair is now up into 3 figures but Godolphin have said nothing about him.
It looks like Only Camelot and Mandaean out of of my original 5 picks will be turning up.
May 13, 2012 at 23:23 #404096The Dante should provide some clues, traditionally the strongest trial for the derby (if you discount the 2000 guineas) but if it doesn’t throw up an impressive winner then opposition to camelot is indeed looking rather thin on the ground.
Like the angle with ernest hemingway, especially as o’brien is on fire right now. Not convinced his horses were completely right last year but as of this moment he looks utterly dominant. he could send a seaside donkey over and it would have a good chance.
Bonfire is the early fav on the exchanges, but not sure prices of just below 2-1 offer much value.
probably the horse who has achieved most of all is mandaean, but must be a worry that he’s gone to godawful, especially the way both of theirs ran in the guineas.
A horse I like a lot is Ektihaam, I love this horse to death, real grand type of horse, won well at newbury last time on desperate ground carrying a penalty, but will surely improve for better ground.
to be honest he’ll probably be the one i’ll back but very worried about ernest hemingway.
May 14, 2012 at 16:33 #404131Aidan o`Brien always seems to have a placed horse in the Derby at big odds so i think Imperial Monarch each-way looks a good bet, unproven on a sound surface but is bt Galileo and a half-brother to derby runner-up The Great Gatsby
May 14, 2012 at 17:46 #404142I read in the Telegraph today that Jim Bolger is proposing to run Parish Hall in both the Irish Guineas and the Derby a week later. I will believe it when I see it! UK rarely run horses at that level back to back. Having said that, it works for the Aussies so in principle there is no reason I cannot work in Europe.
Anyone heard what is happening to Daddy Long Legs this season? He patently hates the dirt, but I think he could pick something up on the turf this summer. I have a soft spot for the horse.
May 14, 2012 at 22:04 #404168Not really the greatest fan of Parish Hall, but how Bolger speaks of him, you have to sit up and take note. I am really sweet on Light Heavy after his win in the Derinstown, but apparently he thinks Parish Hall is streets better.
