Only just thought of this, regarding Theology going over next year instead of this. I suppose the problem is that the horse is a syndicate horse, and needing to get the travel costs [ edit: and $50,000 final declaration fee] out of all of the owners. Solution is that the horse has to accumulate the travel money, and so far it has only won £19k over two seasons.

Forgot to tell you Gerald – I received an email from Harry Herbert. He ain’t coming this year, but they are extremely keen for next year.

Or did I tell you? I can’t remember.

    Re: the Macau gallopers

I believe one is Luen Yat Forever, winner of the Macau Triple Crown. Don’t know about the other one/s.

Sterling Prince came a hopefully encouraging 4th. Missed the race as I still had my alarm set for my normal weekday time of 4.50am

Last year’s Jersey runner Patrician’s Glory has won over 12f, in its 10th recent run.

    Gaiwatch

Just A Blaze came last, having run in 2nd. Was thinking about her horses not being in form, and the cold, and then she wins the following 2yo race. Someone will tell me how much of an idiot I’ve been for taking the 32 for Squamosa for the Golden Rose. Can’t believe it’s a colt – surely that is a girlie name? Clam. :o

    32 Squamosa = very nice.

I was at Newcastle today (my first horse ran a disappointing 10th) and Just A Blaze was gone a long way from home.

Yes, I’m probably a beneficiary of people not realising there was a market.

Back to back wins for Our Cannavaro

Our Cannavaro was lost in the wilderness for 12 months after looking like one of the more promising horses to come out of New Zealand for a few years. He arrived back in civilisation over the last two weeks with back to back wins in Sydney and is starting look more like the horse of old.

After winning The Winning Edge Championship final at Tauranga last May, he went to Melbourne for the spring and had Caufield and Melbourne Cup aspirations. He never regained form through the spring and his performances were a shadow of what they were in his homeland. Taken to Sydney, he showed a little bit of improvement, but was still well behind what was expected of him.

He was turned out for a long break and a couple of issues were identified and treated. Back in the stable of Chris Waller, he had a resuming run which he needed badly and followed that up with a win at the Kensington track at Randwick on the 7th of July, which gave the horse a lot of confidence. That showed in his track work since his win and he put back to back wins together at Canterbury yesterday when winning over 1900 metres with a late charge under Nash Rawiller. His last two wins have come on unsuitable wet tracks and should show further improvement when he gets on to a dry track and can use his powerful sprint to change gears quickly.

He will be taken along a race at a time without any major goals in sight and his next race will be at Rosehill on the 7th of August over 2000 metres. If he continues to win then we will start to aim a little higher towards some of the goals we originally planned for him.

Only just come across this. Ironstein’s trainer wants to give the two main cups a miss this year. I know you’re keen on Ironstein Andy, but apologies if someone has already mentioned this.

    Cup lifts Ryan’s winter
    GLENN DAVIS
    July 4, 2010

IRONSTEIN, rated the slowest horse ever to come out of John Singleton’s Strawberry Hill stud, could be headed for a Caulfield and Melbourne cups campaign

    next year

following his narrow win in the listed Caloundra Cup.

Ridden a treat by Michael Cahill, the Gerald Ryan-trained four-year-old gave the Rosehill trainer his first success in yesterday’s $200,000 2400-metre feature by downing Kiwi stayer Tinseltown by a neck. Gold Coast gelding Teary Eyed was a further 1¾ lengths away in third.

While it was Ryan’s first Caloundra Cup victory, it was the second for Cahill, who was successful on the Russell Cameron-trained Fast Future two years ago.
    Advertisement: Story continues below

Ryan has had one of his best winter carnivals in years. The Caloundra Cup was the icing on the cake after stable star Melito scored a second group 1 win of the season in the Winter Stakes at Eagle Farm last week following a string of four placings.

He also won the group 2 Queensland Guineas at Eagle Farm and group 3 Lord Mayor’s Cup at Doomben with Rothesay while Adnocon claimed the listed Eye Liner Stakes at Ipswich.

    Ryan

said he believed Ironstein had untapped potential but

would not be persuaded into changing plans to tackle this year’s spring races in Sydney and Melbourne.

”There was some talk about him running this spring but he won’t go,” Ryan said. ”I won’t be surprised if the two cup races are on his agenda next season when he’ll be a six year old.

”When he first came to me from Melbourne, he had no form and had a bad reputation.”

Ryan said the turnaround came when Ironstein was spelling and a decision was made to get back to nature and remove all his gear.

”Duncan Grimley (Singleton’s racing manager) told me he was the slowest horse ever to come out of Strawberry Hill,” Ryan said.

Apart from Singleton, Ironstein is part-owned by wine merchant Andrew Margan and Murray McKeough who runs a chain of McDonald’s stores.

Ryan said he was always confident Ironstein had a staying future and picked out the Caloundra and listed Grafton Cup (2350 metres) on July 15 as his winter goals.

”Ever since Jim Cassidy rode him and put half a wrap on him when he ran third at Rosehill, we picked out the Caloundra and Grafton cups,” Ryan said.

He said Singleton and his fellows part-owners were keen to set Ironstein for the Grafton feature. ”All the boys are looking forward to him running at Grafton and now they’ll have a bit of confidence,” he said.

Trainer Mike Moroney was pleased with runner-up Tinseltown but ruled out a rematch with Ironstein at Grafton. ”It was a very good run under the circumstances,” he said. ”He got a long way back and was caught wide but he had cover. The winner has a good sprint and was too good for us.”

Moroney said Tinseltown would likely head back to New Zealand to spell and a decision had not yet been made whether he would race in Melbourne in the spring.

    Well, here goes.

Noticed a couple of other mistakes. Raffaello should be a No instead of a Yes, and Southern Skye vice versa.

Also, didn’t realise that Buxted’s trainer had said in March that he would be aimed at the Melbourne Cup, which helps explain why both Andy and I think Chiswickian were interested in him.

Added another Australian bookie, which is where Harbinger came from. Rating is before today.

Slightly adjusted correlation between Racing Post and Don Scott (Racing & Sports), and haven’t checked whether it comes to the same thing. Took 10kgs off Don Scott as before. Divided the Racing Post lb ratings by 2.2whatever to get kilograms. Then took the 84 horses with a RP rating of 110+ who also had a R&S rating, and sorted them by the difference, and took the median, 3.3 kgs, and added it to the RP ratings. Simples.

Added 1.5kgs to the Fillies and Mares.

Have then sorted the horses by the maximum of either figure. (First time I’ve ever used that Excel function.)

Last week’s OOE poppickers, is in brackets.

Racing Post rating is in blue, and RacingandSports(Don Scott) in pink.

Just to repeat from last week, this is an estimate of the Order of Entry, and NOT of the weights that will be allocated.

I have to say, I’m glad Efficient isn’t qualified, as it means we’ll have to see more of him. He’ll probably have to run in the Caulfield Cup to qualify.

There are some nice horses there, I can’t see it not being a good Melbourne Cup.

Efficient has only ever run beyond 10f twice, winning the Victoria Derby and Melbourne Cup.

In fact, the past four Aussie winners, Shocking, Viewed, Efficient and MD1 (have just wondered whether that is where the username MD3 comes from) had only ever run beyond 10f once before their Cup winning Spring. I’ll try using this as a filter when I have a go at narrowing the field down. Don’t know before then, as R&S only goes back to 2002.

    Number of prep runs

    6 Shocking
    5 Viewed
    4 Efficient
    1 Delta Blues
    4 Makybe Diva
    4 Makybe Diva
    4 Makybe Diva
3 Media Puzzle ( 3 since August. In fact had run every 3-6 weeks since April.)
    :?

On the modified weights I used above, this is what they would have had (Aussie ratings only):-
    48.5 Shocking
    55.5 Viewed
    57.5 Efficient
    54.5 Delta Blues
    50.0 Makybe Diva 1

So, a horse that is only 48-50kg on my list, and has only run once beyond 10f, but qualified, is well capable of winning the Melbourne Cup.

Gone through the Australasian yeses from Viking Legend downwards. This is how many times they’ve run

    beyond

    10 furlongs:-

    1 Viking Legend (G Waterhouse)
    1 Kidnapped (Peter Snowden)
    1 Fitoussi (Peter Moody)
    1 Savsbelle (Graeme Rogerson)
    1 Red Colossus (Greg Eurell)
    1 Rundle (Robert Hickmott?)
    2 Kutchinsky (ran/won at 11f) Tony Noonan
2 Southern Skye (ran/won at 11f) Paul Perry
2 Gallant Lady (one at Flemington though) DL Freedman
2 Exceptionally (filly, so inconsistent) Terry & Karina Sullivan

    3 Sea Galleon
3 Mr Charlie (including 2 seconds at 11f)
    4 Reprisal
    5 Ajhar

    6 Scouting Wide
    6 Itstheone
    6 Booming
    8 Solid Billing
    8 Common Objective
    11 Get Up Jude
    11 Figure Of Speech
    11 Atlantic Air

I’d be quite keen to find the winner from the first group. Indeed, I’ve already backed two of them. I suppose the thing to do is restrain oneself, and then get stuck into any that strike form. (These horses can’t afford to do a Viewed, as they wouldn’t get into the race.)

Just a quick query about whether Rundle is qualified. His race was described as Open, but I’ve got a slight doubt as it is described as a Series Final.

    BENDER CARRIES HOPES

Chris Waller has given up trying to find a Melbourne Cup horse in Europe and will rely on Metal Bender to carry his hopes in the spring.

”They keep running us up [on the price] all the time and it is not worth it,” Waller said. ”You have to pay ‘overs’ for the right horse. We might not need it, because we have Metal Bender at home and he is shaping up very well.”

Waller has made a habit of bringing European stayers to Sydney with Patrician’s Glory and Hawk Island, two of his stable of imports, winning at Randwick yesterday.

Only just come across this month cold news:-

    Musir Missing From Spring
    Wednesday, 23 June 2010:

Musir, the Group 2 UAE Derby winner at Meydan in March, will not run in Australia this spring after scans revealed wear and tear on joints after his racing in Dubai.

The Redoute’s Choice colt of Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum was sent by trainer Mike De Kock to Rosehill’s David Payne to be prepared for spring racing in Australia.

After quarantine and spelling the colt entered Payne’s stable however veterinary advice after scans revealed the colt shouldn’t be put under pressure this spring and saved for next year.

    edit: Lizard’s Desire has laminitis.

    Waterhouse vows to bounce back
    CHRIS ROOTS, SYDNEY
    July 26, 2010

By her standards, Gai Waterhouse says she has not had a lot to shout about this season.

GAI WATERHOUSE has labelled her past season a financial disaster but vowed to return to the top of Sydney racing.

With the season in its final week, the first lady of racing has had 73 winners in Sydney to be third on the trainers’ premiership, a far cry from the 85 with which she won the title in 2008-09.

Her season has been highlighted by five group 1 victories, but still doesn’t live up to Waterhouse’s lofty expectation for herself and the stable.

”I want to be winning 100 races in Sydney and 10 group 1s every year and that is the break-even point,” she said. ”It has been a financially disastrous year this season. I have more than 100 staff and a wages bill of more than $60,000 a week.

”I haven’t got anyone backing me like the chicken kings [the Inghams] or Darley, so unless I’m training winners I’m going out backwards.

”I want to be back up there and that is the challenge for next season. I have a very good team of horses and I’m confident we will get the stable up and going again.”

Waterhouse’s spring team will revolve around a great group of rising three-year-olds, with the $1 million Golden Rose at Rosehill on August 28 the first step on the comeback path. Saturday’s impressive winner Squamosa and autumn stars More Strawberries and Brightexpectations, who will resume at Randwick on August 7, head her Rose hopefuls.

”Squamosa is an exciting horse who has had his problems with shin soreness early on, but he is making up for it now,” Waterhouse said of the unbeaten colt, who will have his next start in the Run To The Rose at Rosehill on August 14.

Her Rose team could swell with another late bloomer, Crossbow, and Dal Dal to run in the Rosebud at Rosehill on Saturday.

Waterhouse also highly rates Manahara, a maiden after three starts, who will resume at Canterbury on Wednesday, and unraced colts Mutamayez and Memorable Moment, who are in line to make their debuts at Warwick Farm on Friday.

The focus earlier in the week will be on Golden Slipper placegetter More Strawberries’ 1200-metre barrier trial against older horses at Warwick Farm tomorrow.

”She won’t be running over anything less than 1200 metres, so that’s why she is trialling over the extra distance,” Waterhouse said.

”I will talk to [owner] John [Singleton] after that and we will make a decision whether she goes to the Golden Rose or Princess Series.

”Every owner wants to go to the Golden Rose because it is a $1 million group 1 early in the season, but we will be doing what is best for her.”

    edit: Gossip from another forum:-
…saw Tea for Two and it’s a nice-looking chestnut with blaze…and pretty good-sized as well…it’s goal is the Melbourne Cup…only three, turning four next week but mature looking horse…

So deffo one of the six.

I know it was a Series Final that Rundle won, but I think it was open to all 3yos. If you had run in the Series and accrued points, I think that you received precedence at the ballot?

I’m not quite sure, but I think he’d be qualified.

I’ve gone through Godolphin’s possibles Gerald, as I’m sure you would see. Not sure if they’ll come this year, if they do I reckon Whispering Gallery is the one.

The Miniver Rose had what I thought was a decent trial this morning at Geelong.

Only a two horse trial, I reckon the winner (Moudre) may also be on a Cups campaign.

I’d have thought that they would

    definitely

come. They have a long term policy of supporting the race, as they sponsor it. Crisford said to Jordon that they would come, but wouldn’t commit to any specific horses. From what Suroor said last year about bringing extra in case one breaks down that should mean that there are at least three on the plane.

Totally agree about Whispering Gallery. Frontrunner though, and isn’t qualified, but is entered in all the races one would expect a horse to be entered in:- Goodwood Cup, Glorious Stakes, Ebor and Irish St Leger.
