Spring Racing Carnival to face largest international contingent on record

The Victoria Racing Club is gearing up for a mammoth Melbourne Cup with news that one of the largest international contingents on record may compete at this year’s Spring Racing Carnival.

Racing Victoria international scout Leigh Jordan has been overseas talking to trainers and owners about potential runners for the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup.

The response has been nothing short of amazing.

Just Horse Racing has already revealed that Dermot Weld has four potential travellers. This includes the two favourites in Betfair’s pre-nomination trading for the Melbourne Cup in Profound Beauty and Rite of Passage. He also has Cox Plate possible Famous Name and another Melbourne Cup horse in Majestic Concorde. Click here to read more.

Top English trainer Luca Cumani revealed to Just Horse Racing last week that Manighar and Drunken Sailor were his two most likely competitors, with Bauer and Purple Moon also a chance. Click here to read more.

We have also brought you details of Jeremy Noseda’s two possible runners, Sans Frontieres and Theology. Click here to read more.

Leigh Jordan, in an interview with Sky Racing, revealed more potential visitors to Melbourne this spring.

The world’s largest stable, Godolphin, is expected to return after finishing second for the third time last year with Crime Scene.

Their main chance is expected to be Holberg, the 2009 Queen’s Vase winner who has a six length victory over Manighar against his name.

Last start, however, he was disappointing as second favourite behind Sans Frontieres in the Princess of Wales Stakes, and he would need to run well at his next start to push ahead to Melbourne.

Nevertheless, Godolphin has numerous horses in contention and it will depend on performances in the next few weeks.

It is unclear whether Aidan O’Brien will bring horses to Melbourne.

His last journey to Australia was in 2008, when he brought three horses – Septimus, Honolulu and Alessandro Volta.

All three finished near the tail after setting a blistering early tempo.

This year, it seems he has limited choice, with the two most likely contenders Ascot Gold Cup runner up Age of Aquarius and Queen’s Vase winner Mikhail Glinka.

Jane Chapple-Hyam, daughter of former opposition leader Andrew Peacock, had a bad experience last time in Australia when her gelding Yellowstone was scratched the night before the 2008 Melbourne Cup.

She is hoping that she may have a better experience with Golden Sword, an Irish Derby runner up with form around classy horses like Sea The Stars, Conduit, Fame and Glory and Rip Van Winkle.

“We are definitely planning to run Golden Sword in the Group Three Coutts Glorious Stakes (2400m) on July 30,” Chapple-Hyam said.

    “We’ll see from there.”

The Glorious Stakes was contested last year by subsequent Melbourne Cup contenders Crime Scene, Basaltico and Warringah.

John Gosden is a renowned traveller of horses, having won numerous Group races in Europe and the United States.

He has never had a runner in Australia, but that may change with the trainer likely to nominate King of Wands for the Melbourne Cup.

King of Wands has won five of his eleven starts, including a last start victory in the Coral Marathon (3200m) at Sandown.

French trainers may look to Melbourne too, with news that the impressive Group 1 Prince of Wales Stakes winner Byword may be heading to the Cox Plate.

That day, Byword beat well travelled stars Presvis, Shalanaya, Cavalryman and Twice Over.

His trainer, Andre Fabre, has indicated that a Cox Plate run is a definite possibility.

It was announced earlier this year that fellow French trainer Pascal Bary was looking at the Cox Plate for his Dubai World Cup winner Gloria de Campeao.

It is unknown if Bary still intends to bring his star to Melbourne, but it is likely that more will be known after he runs in the Group 1 Juddmonte International at York on August 17.

Just Horse Racing brought to you the story of Hong Kong horse Carthage and the ownership dispute which resulted in a change of trainer. Read more here.

It can be confirmed that Carthage is now with Derek Cruz, and that one of the possible aims for the horse is the Melbourne Cup.

It is still believed that John Moore’s Able One is a possibility for the Cox Plate.

The Japanese, who have been unable to compete since 2006 when they quinellaed the Melbourne Cup, have only a few days left to get government approval.

If this cannot be reached, the Spring Racing Carnival will not see Japanese horses for the fourth consecutive year.

This year’s Spring Racing Carnival promises to be massive, and Just Horse Racing will be there every step of the way. Bookmark us now to receive unprecedented coverage of this year’s Spring Racing Carnival.

Just to let you know Andy, that it seems to be Jordon, not Jordan. I got caught out by that as well, unless you took my lead . . .

The Australian authorities will have to do some work to limit the number of international runners in the Melbourne Cup sooner or later.

    1) Not Australians, VRC

    2) Erm, they’re actively canvassing.

The ARB controls the listing of Group and Listed races there as I understand it and, for all I haven’t looked, I bet there’s a line similar to the European Pattern rules of "no indigenous conditions" due to IFHA requirements, otherwise the races will be left like many Japanese Group 1’s were for years.

LOL. Don’t hold your breath Bart …. errr Jose. :lol

I’m not, but the "Internationals" should have to prove their selves in Australia. What is Alessandro Volta doing now? Oh yeah, plodding in South Australia running slower than I can. Warringah? Doing the same just in Sydney.

They both ran in a Melbourne Cup.

Should be grateful for Warringah, or else there wouldn’t have been a pacesetter.

    News from Luca’s website:-

We haven’t had as many winners as we would have liked over the past eight days or so, for all there have been one or two excellent performances in that time, none more so than from

    Drunken Sailor

in the John Smith’s Silver Cup at York at the weekend. Carrying top weight of 9-13 off an official mark of 110, Drunken Sailor came thete to win his race only to find himself in front for too long. The fact he finished so far clear of the rest means that his new official rating will effectively rule him out of handicaps from now on, at least over here, but his performance confirmed what we had suspected after Newcastle, which is that he is developing into the ideal candidate for the Melbourne Cup. We have been notified that he can expect a weight of 52.5k at Flemington, so the likely plan for him now is that he will head to the March Stakes at Goodwood and then into quarantine ahead of a trip to Australia taking in the Caulfield Cup as well.

Hopefully, he will still be joined there by

    Manighar

. He clearly disappointed those that had made him odds on at Sandown the weekend before last, but we were left with the strong impression that he didn’t stay two miles on that testing track despite having plenty of winning form at around that trip in France. At Sandown, Manighar came there travelling best of all, and, for all the fast ground might have also have been an issue being by Linamix, he left Kieren with the feeling he didn’t get home. We all know that races in France tend to be steadily run, and the suspicion has to be that he settled his races there with a turn of foot. The plan now with Manighar is to drop him back in trip and get him going forward again. In a way, looking ahead to Australia, it’s a relief to know that Manighar isn’t an out-and-out stayer. That type of horse doesn’t win the Melbourne Cup and both Bauer and Purple Moon were essentially mile-and-three-quarter horses over here. That may well be Manighar’s best trip.

Other reflections on last week are that the Princess Of Wales’s Stakes probably came a bit too soon for Man Of Iron after his reappearance in the Fred Archer following a long layoff. We’ll see how he is in a couple of weeks and then take things from there.

    Drunken Sailor

was unlucky in the Northumberland Plate as a scuffed start and some early trouble in running ahead of him in the run to the first bend meant that what we had anticipated might be a decent position early on went west. To finish where he did from an unpromising position entering the straight was an excellent effort and though he has gone up 3lb to 110 as a consequence, his effort opens up more options for us. Three months ago we felt he wasn’t particularly handicapped but he has continued to surprise us with his versatility as well as improvement and at this early stage looks very much an ideal type for the Melbourne Cup.

One small problem that might yet prevent him getting there is that he doesn’t yet fulfil the rather strange criteria for entry, having not won a race with the necessary prize money over 2300m or more.

He’s a possible for the John Smith’s Silver Cup at York next weekend, and if we can win that then we can give Australia some serious thought.

Anyway, finally located the Conditions for 2010:-

    http://www.racingvictoria.net.au/asset/ … itions.pdf

    The relevant bit is

since 1 August 2008 inclusive have received $60,000 or more for having won, or been placed 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th in any one race on the flat of 2300 metres or further, for which entry was not restricted by a maximum limitation on prizemoney or races won, or by Official Ratings

The race was a Premier Handicap. Topweight had an Official Rating of 103. If the race was restricted to 0-105 or 0-110, would that mean that it gets excluded by this clause, because it is restricted by Official Ratings? Don’t know about Ireland, but in Britain I think races that are 0-110 or 0-115 can still have higher rated horses running in them, they just have to carry more weight, above 9st10lbs.

I suppose the thing to do is to find out what a Premier Handicap is in Ireland.

edit: There isn’t a handicap restriction for this race in the RP database, whilst there is one of 50-70 for the other h’cap on the 31/07/09 card, so I’m going along with saying it was an Open H’cap, and that Drunken Sailor passes the balloting clause.

I’ve finally finished reading through this thread, something which I have been doing for the past few days.

    I’ve compiled a list of 275 horses.

I’ll try and keep it simple. I’ll take the maximum Racing Post Rating for each horse, and then add 3 lbs to the fillies and mares, to get a rough Order Of Ballot, ignoring the 2300m+ criterion.

As I’m keeping it simple, I’m hoping to have the list completed tomorrow.

What is Alessandro Volta doing now? Oh yeah, plodding in South Australia running slower than I can.

Gee he’s not on his Pat Malone when it comes to ex Cups horses. The list of ex MC runners and placegetters to end their career as also rans in low grade would be fairly extensive. Anything that qualifies has proven itself. Let’s not go down the "prove themselves in Australia first" path. That’s a two way street Jose and the Aussies haven’t exactly done badly on the "exchange program".

I look forward to your OOE Gerald. The Aussie runners are deep into their preps and some may trial/jump out in the next few weeks. I know a few that are progressing well. Only 3 months and 2 weeks until D-Day. :D

Ahh just reading through the thread here’s a gem I missed –

Meanwhile from Queensland, Stathi Katsidis believes AJC Australian Derby winner Shoot Out is on target to emulate the legendary Phar Lap during the Melbourne spring.

ROFLMAO. And he’ll have to do a lot more than win the Melbourne Cup to emulate the immortal one. The 1930 Carnival feat of Phar Lap will never be matched. He won on all four days of the meeting and took the Cox Plate the week before. Giddy up Shoot Out!

Thanks Andy for the WAN confirmation. I actually thought he kicked off earlier than late June. Have you managed to find an earlier prep for a winner?

This is a handicap, not a wfa race that’s unlikely to fill. British races rarely have a full maximum field even for Group 1 races and there is no "minimum rating" requirement like NH racing has. It makes no difference if Australian horses enter a Group 1 here in general. The travel expenses issues and drug issues Noseda and Johnston have discussed are remain relevant. The fact Alessandro Volta’s running and riding broke the rules of Australian racing isn’t impressive either.

The Melbourne Cup though has a stack of entry requirements, at the discretion of those in-charge, and they don’t have one requiring the horse to prove itself in Australia? I would call that mad from a strict "racing" perspective, but as it’s certainly not hurting race turnover and race interest it’s not going to matter.

    It’s just my opinion anyway.

Just spoke to RVL – they are expecting between four and eight internationals in the Melbourne Cup.

And they hope for at least one international in the Cox Plate – and it is the big one, Gloria De Campeao.

It seems that he is still on track to run in Melbourne, which is great news.

I’m looking forward to seeing your order of entry Gerald!!!

It will be interesting though, because a horse like Efficient will be near the top of the weights but I don’t think he’s passed the first ballot clause!

The OOE will be imperfect, because the Racing Post don’t have some of the recent relevant races in Queensland, SA or WA in their database.

Also, I’m getting the feeling that they underestimate the form of some of the 3yo races a bit. 105 for the winner of a state Derby/Oaks/Guineas seems a bit low to me.

I’ve done the first 120 so far. The reason there are so mnay in the list is mainly because of Sportingbet or whoever including so many sprinter/miles in their betting list.

Hmmm I’m not quite sure about RP ratings so I’ll stay out.

It is definitely seen though that the AJC Derby and VRC Derby are at the top of the pecking order. Some years, the QLD Derby too.

The SA Derby is probably Group 2 standard, the WA Derby Group 3 standard.

Tasmanian and NT Derby are Listed class or worse.

Use the same for the Oaks.

As for the Guineas – Caulfield, Randwick, Rosehill and Australian Guineas are the four top Guineas.

Just below that would be the Queensland Guineas.

The rest are well below that standard.

Last Tuesday’s Melbourne Herald Sun apparently carried a story that either Mourilyan or Mourayan had died. I’m trying to source a copy of the newspaper, I’m in Sydney though so it is a tad hard.

Latest news – Katsumi Yoshida has booked Craig Williams for the ride on Jaguar Mail in the Melbourne Cup.

They are still planning to come to Australia, and are working towards it.

Just hope that the Government approves the quarantine facilities in the next couple of weeks.

    The Japanese may be back!!!

Okay, I’ve taken the maximum RPR of horses mentioned in this thread, in the betfair market, or in the Sportingbet I think market. However, I’ve also started using the ratings in the racingandsports website (Don Scott Rating graph?), but I can only look up 100 of those a day.

I’ve taken an RPR rating of 110 lbs to be equivalent to 64 kgs, Don Scott.

I’ve taken 10 kgs off the Don Scott numbers to get rough Melbourne Cup weights for mature horses, and then added 1.5kgs for Fillies and Mares, so that they will be lifted to their place in the Order Of Entry.

I’ll update this again next weekend.
