Haven’t listened much to Sport 927 in the past couple of months. It doesn’t help that they spend so much time talking about footie etc during the breakfast programme.
Anyway, I’m blaming them for the terrible secret I’ve been keeping for the past month – I’m watching virtually every episode of CSI and NCIS I come across. They may be repeats, but they’re new to me.
A bit of new news here about King Of Wands. I’ll see whether I can catch a repeat of this in the next few hours.
Overseas stars show interest in Spring Carnival
Thu 15 JulAccomplished British trainers John Gosden and Jeremy Noseda have shown interest in nominating horses for the 150th Melbourne Cup.
Speaking to Shane Anderson on Racing Ahead this morning, Racing Victoria international thoroughbred talent scout Leigh Jordon was encouraged by the enquiries from the pair, who hold fine reputations among trainers.
King of Wands is a last start winner of the Marathon Stakes (3200m) at Sandown (England) for Gosden, setting a course record. He is a winner of five of his 11 starts.
Sans Frontieres won the Princess Of Wales’s Stakes (2400m) at Newmarket earlier this month and the son of Galilieo now has two wins from seven starts.
Jordon said Dermot Weld would enter Rite Of Passage, winner of the Ascot Gold Cup, expected to have his next run in the Irish St Leger. Stablemate Majestic Concorde, who also races over jumps, has been mentioned as a possible nomination.
Weld is likely to enter Profound Beauty, who was found to be in season when second in the Curragh Cup last start. She will have her next run in the coming week.
Famous Name, a recent Group race winner at Leopardstown, could be a Cox Plate contender for Weld.
July 15, 2010 at 16:10 #306664Just caught a replay.
Alverta and Starspangledbanner may run in the Maurice de Gheest.
Age Of Aquarius is APOB’s main prospect, but it seems likely it will get an entry, but unlikely to run.
Dermot Weld is bringing Rite of Passage, and is fairly confident that Profound Beauty will come too. Also Majestic Concorde, who is in the same ownership as Rite Of Passage. Weld is keen to bring over Famous Name for the Cox Plate, but the owner may be more keen on the Breeders’ Cup. (No mention of Casual Conquest.)
Holberg, ran disappointingly lto though,
may
be the main Godolphin chane to come down, but several horses will be running in the next few weeks.
Cumani. I haven’t made a note about Manighar. Purple Moon – owner not keen. Drunken Sailor – owners very keen. Jordan said weight may be an issue, but I think Jordan is a bit behind here; the horse has gone up in the weights following two seconds in H’caps, and will get into the Melbourne Cup easily, in my opinion.
Jane Chapple-Hyam. Golden Sword will run in the Glorious Stakes at Glorious Goodwood (the race that Basaltico, Warringah and Crime Scene ran in last year), and also a Listed race. If performs well, will come down.
Jeremy Noseda. Sans Frontieres. Sir Robert Ogden has been down before. (Info please.)
John Gosden, King Of Wands, asked lots of questions.
Going over to France, to speak to the trainers there.
Americain (Royer-Dupre) is Aussie-owned, but low in the weights.
Gibson has Bannaby.
Fabre has Byword, who may come down for the Cox Plate.
end of interview.

It’s probably obvious by now that I’m a big fan of the stable, IMO the one that might turn out to be really special over the 12 to 16 furlong trip is NATURAL HIGH, any word on that one?
July 15, 2010 at 16:36 #306667No, CS, I tried to write down every horse, but now that you’ve marked my card, I’ll keep an active eye on it.
July 15, 2010 at 16:38 #306668Betting boots on for the Ebor?
July 15, 2010 at 16:43 #306669Looks like he’d be a couple of pounds shy of getting into the race, so needs to pick up a penalty to get into the Ebor.

He’s 3 out of 4, got a dreadful ride at Galway or would be unbeaten, worth looking at the form/replays as he’s had recent entries and I assume will be out very soon, probabbly at Galway
July 15, 2010 at 18:51 #306696The Queensland Derby, Brisbane Cup, Queensland Cup et al pretty much passed me by. Distracted by CSI, the TRF Tipping World Championships, sleeping, Tour de France, Royal Ascot, the Eclipse and the July meeting.
Just been reading various stuff, mainly about Kiwi horses, and mainly in the Waikato Times.

Katie Lee is having [edited] two races on the 14th and 28th August, and then heading to Melbourne, where her target will be the Cox Plate. She won’t run on Soft ground.
Trainer of Sir Time Keeper seems quite bullish about a Spring Carnival campaign, but he only came 6th in the Queensland Derby and 5th in the NZ Derby in his two attempts at 2400m. Has run 32 times as a 2yo and 3yo, and is by Stravinsky.

Ekstreme, who came 3rd in the Brisbane Cup, would just about scrape into the Melbourne Cup if she were aimed at it. Say for example she was given 51.5kg, she would be treated the same as horses and geldings on 53kg because of her 1.5kg allowance for balloting purposes. Likes an easy surface though, and has only just finished the Autumn campaign. Haven’t come across any mention that they are interested in it though.
Shootoff’s connections were talking about a Victoria Derby campaign. Was due to run yesterday, but looks like he was scratched?
July 15, 2010 at 19:01 #306697From AAP 2 May:-
After her win in the Captain Cook, had talked about sending Ekstreme for the Cox Plate in the spring but has revised those thoughts.
"You can’t really do Brisbane in the winter and then Melbourne in the spring," he said.
So, we can forget about her.
July 15, 2010 at 19:57 #306716Get Up Jude Spelled Ahead of 2010 Melbourne Cup Campaign
28 May 2010Six-year-old gelding Get Up Jude has been sent to the paddocks early to rest up before their spring campaign that connections are hoping will culminate with a start in the 150th Melbourne Cup on Tuesday November 2.
Trained by Diane Poidevin-Laine at Kembla Grange, Get Up Jude had five testing starts this season, his best performance an eye-catching fifth to Jessicabeel in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) on April 24 at Randwick.
Since his Sydney Cup run over the same two-mile distance as the prestigious Melbourne Cup, Get Up Jude had two more races but was beginning to look tired finishing fifth in the Lord Mayors Cup (2000m) and then second last when beaten by 13 lengths in the WJ McKell Cup (2400m) last Saturday.
The disappointing run in the WJ McKell Cup lead Poidevin-Laine to abandon Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival plans to send Get Up Jude to a well-earned spell instead.
Get Up Jude is an excellent stayer, the son of Res Judicata having won six of their 26 career starts, and will now be saved for the spring where he will be nominated for a number of Cup Carnival races including the Melbourne Cup.

Time to break more insane records then. I’m convinced this horse will run in the Lexus Stakes and Mackinnon Stakes on the same day. Or maybe trying to run on all four days of the Flemington carnival will be the plan.
July 15, 2010 at 21:37 #306741Might be a bit of imprecise use of language by me there. I mean he has run 32 times in total, not 32 times each year . . .
July 15, 2010 at 21:46 #306743Gerald, any mention of Theology from Noseda?
I still reckon he’d be my top tip at this stage.
And ignore anything Nicholson says about Sir Slick or Sir Time Keeper IMO.

No, Gerald, I know the horse in the last few months has the most insane record of running in as many races as they could run him in. He does have absolutely no hope in any half-decent staying race, but, the way Sir Time Keeper has been trained, I reckon if they could, he would run in 2 races per Saturday meeting.

Just looked at The Ebor, I’d say that’s the perfect race for Natural High RP rating seems very low, I see he has no offical rating

Yes, I agree that the Racing Post Rating of 87 seems a bit low for a horse that won easily by six lengths. The horse has an OR of 90, but I’m not sure whether that is an Irish mark, or whether the RP database has got hold of the British mark – the Racing Post this year had the Grand National marks of the entries on the Monday, the day before they were officially released at the presentation on the Tuesday . . .

No mention by Jordon.
Just out of interest, I read that Nicholson reckons he’s still got one good year left with Sir Slick!
