Hope they go to France rather than run in the National – take on the best PN.
December 28, 2008 at 17:18 #199817I’d love to see Denman run in the national. If ever a horse was made for the race he is. He can’t carry more than 11 stone 10, he’d absolutely trot up IMO.

Possibly, but by no means a certainty. I wouldn’t risk it, especially if he’d had a hard race in the Gold Cup.
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
December 28, 2008 at 19:55 #199855I have my doubts about Denman staying the trip. Yes, he can handle the Gold Cup trip but a GN is a different race entirely. Of course, Denman would be the best horse in the race by mile so assuming his jumping and stamina held up then he’d be in with a huge chance. Would love to see him give it a shot myself.
December 28, 2008 at 20:40 #199873I think he’s a year too young anyway at the moment but what a grand stamp of a chaser he is; the way his old ears were flicking back at the end to see if another horse was coming at him! I don’t think he’ll ever run in the National going by what the trainer said afterwards….Cornish Sett ran well. Wonder if Mon Momes race was too close to the last one; at least I’ll get a good price for the National when the weights come out.
December 28, 2008 at 21:38 #199895Have the weights been released yet for the National, i can not find my way around the new Racing Post site ?
If not what sort of weight would Denman get in the National ?
Entries are by Noon 27th January.
The weights look like they’re out 8 February or shortly after, because that is the date by which horses have to have achieved a rating of 110 or greater.
1st confirmation of entries by 24th Feb
2nd confirmation of entries 17th March, which is handy, because its after Cheltenham.I saw on the RP website last week that the top weight for the GN will be 11-10 instead of 11-12. (As I see your address is Australia, I had better mention the bottom weight is 10-0!)
If Denman ran in the GN, there would only be 3-5 horses in the handicap proper.
Okay, lets work that last sentence out properly. Denman has an OR of 182, but the Handicapper is likely to give him a rating of 175 or 176 for the National, because he tries to encourage the top horses to participate. Therefore a horse will have to be rated 151 or more to be in the handicap proper. Last season there were 7 horses rated 151 or greater in the GN. Presumably, Denman’s participation would encourage a few more horses rated 150+ to run, as they would be carrying 10 stone something, instead of 11st 7lbs+ , but there ain’t a great deal of 150+ horses in the first place.

.With respect, Harrys hardly likely to say he hasn’t got a cat in hells chance and is likely to come a cropper at The Chair is he?
Personally with the heart scare he’s a non starter this year.December 28, 2008 at 22:46 #199914Gerald
but my Irish dark horse ran a corker (didn’t win but ran a fantastic race)!!! Another one with old Vulgan in him! You still won’t find him in the Betfair market, which I find odd because he will get a run if entered, but got my 100’s at Ladbrokes in October.
Hi KC,
in the context of the GN, does "ran a corker" mean he came midfield in a hurdle race?
The pedigrees on the RP website only go back 2 generations, so unable to find Vulgan. Weatherbys is a bit expensive for me for a 3 generation pedigree.
By a process of elimination, you must be referring to Vic Venturi, but I haven’t extensively worked my way through all of yesterday’s results.
[edit: have just used "Pedigree Enquiry" on the Internet. Vulgan 4 generations back – I’m going to have a bit of fun now with Pedigree Enquiry, I thought you could only use it for good, famous horses.]
[Second edit: Jesus, I’ve just looked at Clantime’s pedigree – he must be a totally different sub-species of thoroughbred, though I do seem to remember that he wasn’t a 100% thoroughbred.]
December 28, 2008 at 23:14 #199918A heart murmur is something hundreds of animals have. Dogs get them and if it’s a grade 2 one which I believe was the diagnosis on Denman a lot of the time the vet will tell you not to worry he will get over it without treatment.
Denman being a racehorse they decided to treat it with corrective medicines and now there is absolutely no sign of it according to PN.
I think you are exagerating the situation and worrying uneccessarily…..PN would love you……..a moral certainty for 2 fingers when the Tank trots up 1st time up I would say.
December 29, 2008 at 00:36 #199944Indeed it was Vic Venturi, yes.
Was never travelling in the Irish National but he showed he can handle big fields as he showed yesterday and of those racing prominently throughout the race he was the only one still there at the death and not swallowed up by the hold up horses. That tells me he can stay a lot further.High Chimes was the British based horse but the stable are not exactly firing at the moment and he was out of contention too soon for there to be stamina issues of which he should really have none. I have my very silly 360’s on Betfair (pre Hennessy price) and I’m not giving up on him just yet.
December 29, 2008 at 00:58 #199950Vic Venturi had achieved the same top RPR of 138 five times. Yesterday he went through that ceiling, so there could be more to come. (It does make you wonder though whether RPR had been using Vic Venturi as their marker horse.)
December 29, 2008 at 21:32 #200254Having studied the potential field for this years Grand National, i have
decided to take a chance at 85 on Betfair for a horse that could take to the race like a duck to water, a horse that travels with ease, jumps with
fluency, will get the trip because he is actually a 21/2m specialist!! has
finished 2nd in a Gold cup and could carry top weight no problem!
A.P McCoy this is your chance to finally win the race! Yes the more i think about it Trainer, Owner, form, i cant find a single negative!
EXOTIC DANCER 85 on Betfair Get on!December 30, 2008 at 03:35 #200318harry findlay in an interview last year with racing uk was really keen to send him to aintree and Paul Nichols has said he will probually have another run after the Gold Cup and personally would love to see him run in the national and for them to take the gamble which sometimes is lacking in racing
December 30, 2008 at 04:24 #200327"DENMAN" currently trades at 36 on Betfair for anyone interested!
December 30, 2008 at 04:55 #200341I suppose all the Denman coming in, in the market, was just a part-time gambler, such as myself (but it wasn’t me) having a few bets over the Christmas period.
December 30, 2008 at 05:16 #200343GW, you astonish me. I’d have thought you’d have gone Alberta’s Run for the double.
December 30, 2008 at 17:18 #200409I’m pleased that Mon Mome is still a good price for the National after Saturday as I think that he’s still a good ew bet.
