The "hype" surrounding the others? Are you seriously suggesting that Henry’s two year old form was stronger than New Approach’s? For one?

Was talking about the hype surrounding Ibn Khaldoun, more recently Fireside and the Stoute horse and to a lesser extent Raven’s Pass. If you look back at my posts regarding New Approach v Henry I said based on the Futurity Henry had a length or 2 to find, but that given the change of going, could over come that. I also on more than one occasion said New Approach was the best 2 year old, my problem was that 1m isn’t his optimum trip and that was more or less proved right.
May 6, 2008 at 10:54 #161891In fairness Salselson it’s implied that I’m including myself in this (hopefully mild) criticism having backed Raven’s Pass. Hopefully we get a little wiser every year, otherwise what’s the point of being alive? When you’re staring at a row of red figures in the book humility is required, as well as a resolution to eliminate mistakes if possible.
I was only kidding, hence the emoticon
I still stand by backing a stable in a group 1 is not the way to go but it worked this time, so all credit to those who backed the winner.
I also backed Raven’s Pass, and whilst I think the draw gave him no chance with the way the race panned out, I think you need to be a stouter stayer than he is to win a classic.
Wiser? If only..
May 6, 2008 at 22:30 #161998Ibn Khaldun was hype. He was an excellent progressive type and pulled away with great ability in the Racing Post Trophy. Add the fact that his pedigree was dotted with not only champion milers but major mile Classic performers.
May 6, 2008 at 22:32 #162002For me the only negative about Ibn is that he won over 1m as a 2yo and for me he will be better over 1m2f+ as the season progresses
May 6, 2008 at 22:46 #162007Henry has been rated 121 by the deputy head handicapper at the BHA although "that may well be subject to change when more evidence comes to light".
New Approach given 120 – Same as Cockney Rebel, who I happen to think would have proved to be an absolute top class miler if he hadn’t got injured and is being underrated imo.
May 8, 2008 at 00:38 #162242No horse should be allowed to delay the start 10 minutes especially when the others are ready to go.And no horse should be beaten after he has passed the winning post. Both Bolger and Manning were guilty of an arrogant approach, and were no credit to Irish racing.

I’d strongly suggest he was not a 20-1 shot either Clive.

Do you think Nahood would have been the price she was, with the form she had, if trained by AOB?

Did Manning hit the horse after it had passed the post?

Banging! Yes I am! His form was much better than a 20-1 chance no matter who he was trained by Clive.

I do believe so, but my feeling is that he didn’t realise that they had passed the post…..too intent on getting all he could out of the colt.

"Beaten" is slightly over the top and it would certainly be preferable to see every horse ridden through the finishing line rather than the jockey easing up several strides before the line as is often the case.
May 14, 2008 at 10:26 #163364Finally some personal impressions from a great German fan:
May 14, 2008 at 10:38 #163368Do you know jimmy parlo?
May 14, 2008 at 11:10 #163376The Coventry form is nothing special at all. It was a narrow victory from some ordinary horses. Look at some of those close up
On that alone, I would definately not have fancied him for the 2000 guineas
There is no doubt (as confirmed by the trainer) that Henry has improved a lot over the winter
That probably had more to do with his price than being an AOB trained animal.
Not really…otherwise he would have been 10’s over the winter. He was nearer 16’s
But over a mile, I would now back Henry against NA.
May 16, 2008 at 05:54 #163800A jockey should at least know where the winning post is I do believe.I have never seen a jockey beat a horse after the post and claim ignorance of it’s whereabouts. I would love to hear Manning’s explanation. He was fined for his behavior right?(I believe beat is the correct term when hitting has no objective)
