March 9, 2015 at 10:00 #810848Thanks, I had never seen the race before. As I recall Pollardstown had a ‘proper’ campaign winning five on the spin. He was very game but not quite quick enough to win a Champion Hurdle.
March 9, 2015 at 11:00 #815466Great memories….. Loved that era…. Sea Pigeon, Night Nurse and Monksfield……some epic races…
Thanks

March 9, 2015 at 17:26 #820994Great stuff. Was that footage from Racetech? It doesn’t look like bbc coverage.
March 9, 2015 at 19:19 #821103Jockey didn’t shine on Celtic Ryde – Who was it?
March 9, 2015 at 22:02 #821364Yes it’s the racetech copy (would have been rts, racecourse technical services I think).
Does anyone know why they had to stop commentating a few strides before the line? They always did this so it must have been a rule. Possibly to stop any betting shop disputes if there was a bad call?
March 10, 2015 at 20:59 #823389Thanks my site is full of those and its why I continue to post
March 10, 2015 at 21:01 #823390Maybe not sure its from a copy I came compilation review I came upon
March 10, 2015 at 21:13 #823407I stand to be corrected Martin O’Halloran who I know rode him around this time in his career. Sorry if ive got it wrong
March 10, 2015 at 23:04 #823683You are my hero blueman
March 20, 2015 at 12:28 #848507How do you get hold of these old clips? Do you know if footage still exists for most of the 70s Cheltenham races? I am thinking if the Casbah race is out there others must be as well. If they are it is a shame that Cheltenham can’t round them all up and market them. The 80s is pretty well covered on YouTube but there are only a few gems from the 70s such as Golden Cygnet. So many old races I would happily pay to see. Always wanted to see the Kinloch Brae’s Gold Cup fall but the sadly the clip on YouTube doesn’t cover it.
March 20, 2015 at 17:32 #848631Would love the full race of Dawn Run/Gaye Brief in 1983 Christmas Hurdle, and full clip of Captain Christy’s Gold cup
March 20, 2015 at 19:27 #848656I always feel that racing misses a trick by not playing on it’s rich history and heritage (don’t get me started on removing historic race names – Bula hurdle anyone?). There must be a wealth of races (especially from approx 1970 onwards which were covered by one of the terrestrial channels.
In these days of Youtube, couldn’t the racecourses (via RUK / ATR depending on their affiliation publish some of their historic races online for other to enjoy and – you never know – develop a love of the sport?

If only. Personally, I would prefer a re-run of an old ITV seven rather than some of today’s dross. RUK occasionally fill time with re-runs of old Flat races but rarely dip into the 70s. Unfortunately, they spoil things by repeating them over and over again. Channel 4 will occasionally show a few old clips but they are limited to seconds and these days they seem to prefer waffle from the booth instead.
March 21, 2015 at 09:50 #849371The commentators in that era stopped in order to leave the PA system free for the judge, and he would then call the result or photo finish.
The judge is still the one that announces the official result, but the advent of pictures in the shops led to the demand for the commentator to keep talking as the old approach looked silly once everybody could see what was happening.
March 21, 2015 at 10:03 #849382While how far horses have progressed in the last 30 years may be a moot point, one thing these (great) old clips highlight is the massive, step-change improvements that have been made by jockeys.
March 22, 2015 at 00:11 #854537Yes the jockeys have come on a ton. If the one on Celtic Ryde was Martin O`Halloran he certainly had some very good days with superbly timed hold up rides on this horse and on Bachelors Hall
