That’s a good post Sal, and i’ll certainly remember it.
It’s annoying that the Fillies Mile was at HQ last year, because it would be interesting to compare times between, say a possible 10f horse in Nannina and a genuine miler in Soviet Song.
Abigail Pett and Almerita are the only 2 other stakes winners by Medicean. Almeritas has run twice over a mile, most recently in the German Guineas, and was staying on in both her starts to finish 2nd. Abigail Pett never ran over a mile, but on all his starts, with the exception of her defeat to Frost Giant LTO, his race description has said at the end ‘kept on’ or ‘ran on well,’ suggesting stamina kicking in.
I haven’t heard of Triptych, but I certainly know the other 3  . Russian Rhythm didn’t really get the 10f trip, and was extremely lucky to hold on when beating the French horse, forget the name. (Ana Maria?)
If there was to be a lack of pace Sal, I almost certainly would not be thinking that Percy or Horatio will get outpaced, but the Guineas tends to be a mile sprint, and there seems to be more front runners or prominent horses than held up or out the back runners. Obviously a slow pace would be just as bad for them, but 2 or 3 runners could take each other on for the lead and send them along at a huge gallop. Many people are overlooking Frost Giant, who is basically a pace setter.
Funny how nobody’s mentioning the hype around Sir Percy. There’s been far more of that for this horse than any Ballydoyle runner this year. I just don’t understand the difference in price between Percy and Horatio. Run the race again and Horatio would win by at least 5L, taking into account the change of tactics, hangover from Longchamp and trouble in running.
May 6, 2006 at 02:26 #71779I do agree with u that Russian rhythm wasn’t as good over 10f but she did get the trip because u said she held on but she didnt she just got up and was checked in her run about 3 out and had to be switched.
May 6, 2006 at 21:30 #71780I know nothing about this early season flat business so I need somone else to give me the winner of this.
I suppose I fancy flashy wings but I think Wake up Maggie is nice ew price.

May 7, 2006 at 14:39 #71782A really nice performance and won pretty easily. I think the form of her last race was overlooked too easily. I had a small wager on it but well done to Speciosa.
May 7, 2006 at 14:43 #71783Fantastic.
May 7, 2006 at 14:44 #71784Congrats to small time trainer who operates primarily jumps yard from non traditional training centre.
Also to unfashionable jockey.
Won comfortably and appeared to be taken intentionally to the rails rather than hanging ,which it seems to do on firmer ground.
Godolphin and Coolmore no better than 4th.
Doubtless there may be big money offers for the filly.
May 7, 2006 at 14:44 #71785I had a big cut of money on asset yesterday and a few tiny bits on wake up maggie and speciosa. Not complaining but in truth, Im a hopless backer of horses. I just dont have the balls after a few recent set backs.

May 7, 2006 at 17:32 #71786First post for me on the forum. Just back from a soggy Newmarket. So near and yet so far. Had a nice each way ante post bet on Confidential Lady @ 20/1 that nearly came off. Also had a bet on Mick Channon’s Flashy Wings, very weak in the market on the day and ran accordingly. Nice to see a small trainer beating the big guns though and nice appreciation from the crowd as well.
May 7, 2006 at 18:38 #71787Congratulations to Speciosa and the connections. Completely dismissed her as a result of a poor looking Nell Gwyn, and the poor record of many nell Gwyn runners.
I liked Flashy Wings but was never going to get moving on soft ground. Rumplestiltskin was staying on at the end – desperate for a step-up to 1m 2f.
May 7, 2006 at 19:02 #71788Yeah, I agree it was a poor Nell Gwynn and I was put off backing Speciosa last night when I was thinking about it but having studied the others, and seen the ground I decided that she was certainly going to be tough enough. I also felt at the time that not enough people made more comment about overcoming that veering tendency. It might not add a huge distance to her race but it definilty can cost a horse a lot of impetus.
I reckon she will stay another 2 furlongs anyway.
Just wondering where she should go next????????

May 7, 2006 at 19:10 #71789What a tearjerker from Speciosa! Almost as good as the jumps ;) A wonderful result.
May 7, 2006 at 19:21 #71790She won’t go the Curragh as she hangs left trainer has stated.
I would imagine the Coronation Stakes would be next, followed by the Nassau and Matron Stakes. Possibly the Champion Stakes as well??
May 7, 2006 at 19:43 #71791The Jockey steered it left today. I didn’t see it hang today. Having said that it may have done if given the chance and that limits its future targets. Is it entered in the Oaks?

What do the Coronation Stakes and Nassau have in common with the Irish Guineas?
May 7, 2006 at 19:50 #71794No, no entry – Sly also said that unlikely to stay further than 10f.
Good thinking DJ – RH tracks.
