The expected mumblings have surfaced from some among the defeated factions about low turnout in by-elections impinging on their chances; but as it happens turnout at 47.6% was rather good for a by-election and only fractionally down on the 48.01% at the general election.
Had turnout increased on the GE that would have been rare indeed: just 31 times in all and none since 1971.
