Very interesting race in Perth tomorrow
September 21, 2016 at 11:09 #12641662015 bumper winner v 2016 bumper winner on their hurdle debuts.
Very much looking forward to it.September 21, 2016 at 13:14 #1264177Perth must be pleased.
If it dries out I think Wakea has a fair chance of beating both of them.
September 21, 2016 at 13:33 #1264179Looking forward to seeing both these horses out as well, and its nice race for Perth. I think in time Moon Racer will be the better, but I wouldn’t put my money where my mouth is tomorrow.
September 21, 2016 at 19:38 #1264215Super race, can’t wait.
September 21, 2016 at 19:49 #1264216I liked Moon Racer probably more for the style of his Festival victory than for what he beat, though that might need a rethink. If I’m understanding ATR’s Future Form ‘bar’ (I don’t normally use it), only Yanworth has won a race from MR’s 22 opponents that day. Pipe was hopeful of making Cheltenham in March but ran out of time. He got him to Punchestown and had he won there I wouldn’t oppose him tomorrow. But he’s 7 now and has managed only 4 runs in his life. Will he break down again, and, if so, when?
Ballyandy is just five, is very likely to have a fair bit of improvement in him and, crucially, to my mind, his trainer loves to get early season winners. He should be spot on for this and, of the pair, I prefer him.
Wakea was a 104 Flat horse and his trainer could surely have found much easier ways of trying to win 3 grand than this, so it would be unwise to discount him.
Probably a race for watching.

That’s a really surprising statistic because the bumper regulary produces a host of subsequent winners.
Without the rain issue and possibility of one or more non-runners Wakea would look an each-way bet to nothing. Bookmakers will want one to come out.

Apologies, two of those entered ran today, hence the 8/1 Wakea. Odds on that there will be only six runners.

What do you mean only yanworth has won a race? Any race since?
Theres been a few hurdle winners come from that race in addition to Yanworth. without checking all their results I know these defo won atleast 1 (some are multiple race winners) Bellshill, 0 0 seven, modus, up for review, stone hard, supasundae and maybe some of the others…September 21, 2016 at 23:14 #1264240It started raining as I left the course this evening and was still peeing it down an hour and a half later.
I would expect the back straight to be heavy. I hope they all run.

I looked at the wrong line which was the Next Time Out Wins (4 in total). For the whole period it was 33 wins from 97 runs – a very strong percentage, I’d guess, though Mr Caution would be better qualified to comment as I believe he is a regular user of ATR’s site.
Mea Culpa – next time I quote something I’ll try and make sure I understand it!
September 22, 2016 at 16:47 #1264318Good, solid, seasonal debuts from both the big two today. Moon Racer obviously has a lot of class but his fragile nature has to be a concern; I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s campaigned sparingly, with only one or two more runs for experience before Cheltenham in March. Ballyandy strikes me as more of a stayer and would be aimed at the Neptune if he were mine.
September 22, 2016 at 16:59 #1264319Was just going to say similar Gladiateur. Ballyandy has been talked about more of a stayer so to run Moon racer – a speedy type to half a length over 2m is no bad first outing.
Great race for this time of year, fair play to the connections of both for standing their ground. Not your usual soft touch first time out novice hurdle.
14s for Moon Racer is a fair price for the supreme, 8s on offer way too skinny. Cant take myself to back him though due to fragility concerns and also the fact there could be a potential superstar hiding in someones stable. Perhaps Mullins.
16s for Ballyandy for the Neptune. Now that is very fair also.September 22, 2016 at 18:21 #1264324I think it was a real shame that we didn’t have a good ground race with Wakea taking on the big two. That would have given some guide to the value of the form.
It was an exciting race but I don’t think there was enough to suggest either would be winning at the Festival, whatever the distance.
September 22, 2016 at 19:47 #1264333Just watched the race. I think Moon Racer had a touch more in hand than the battling finish suggests. Ballyandy wasn’t great at the last two flights, coming up a stride later than asked at the last. I suspect he’d have lost anyway. Not so sure that Ballyandy would reverse form over a longer trip.
As mentioned earlier, Moon Racer is no ante-post bet for any race, though it’s encouraging that he’s appeared so early.
September 23, 2016 at 12:03 #1264396Although it was undoubtedly an intriguing early season event, it has left me scratching my head a bit.
I cannot see it being sensible to travel both horses hundreds of miles in both directions , whilst neither have any hurdling experience whatsoever (other than at home) for a prize of a few grand. Both will probably have had a sterner test than ideal for a debut and thankfully neither of them ended up on the floor.
I would think that there are far easier means of accumulating both prizemoney and experience.September 23, 2016 at 15:27 #1264426The Twister has had huge success at the September meeting at Perth for as long as I have been going racing. He also took flying Angel for his fencing debut so he’s obviously happy to run his stable stars at the track. David Pipe supports the course whenever he can and must have felt that he was guaranteed decent ground off Moon Racer.
There is logic in what you say given the prize money but I for one am glad that logic went out the window as it was a belting race yesterday which did neither horse’s reputation any harm.
