Horse Racing is a sport that is full of twists and turns, featuring moments that are spoken about by sports fans for years to come. There are many events around the world that draw the attention of thousands of viewers with their dramatic racing action and unpredictable moments.
Over the years, we have seen many iconic moments in horse racing, from photo finishes to incredible, hilarious fails, but today, BoyleSports, the home of live blackjack, will be taking a look at some of the most unexpected moments in horse racing.
Foinavon Grand National Win, 1967
The Grand National is one of the biggest horse races in the world, often regarded as the largest and most prestigious in the UK. Each year, Aintree Racecourse is packed full of fans in anticipation of watching some of the greatest racehorses on the planet. The Merseyside race began in 1839 and has provided plenty of moments that will be spoken about for years to come, but the underdog story of Foinavon is regarded as one of the most unexpected of all time. The 100/1 horse was written off when it came to chances of winning, with even its owner not attending the race, believing it stood no chance. The reputation of the Aintree Racecourse was highlighted in 1967, when almost all of the horses fell on the 23rd fence, except for Foinavon, who was given an easy finish, becoming one of only a few 100/1 horses to win the Grand National.
Devon Loch’s Flop
Devon Loch is a name in horse racing that is iconic, but not for being a dominant horse, rather for being at the centre of one of the most humorous yet confusing moments in the history of the sport. Owned by the Queen Mother, Devon Loch was on its way to winning the 1956 Grand National, creating a large gap between second and third place, almost guaranteeing its chances of taking home first place. But randomly, as the horse approached the finish line, for some unknown reason, the horse decided to jump into the air and belly flop onto the turf, throwing away the lead. To this day, it still remains a mystery why Devon Loch did this, but it is a moment that will continue to be spoken about for many decades to come.
Norton’s Coin, Cheltenham Gold Cup, 1990
The Cheltenham Gold Cup is often referred to as one of the biggest horse races in the UK, regarded as being just as prestigious as the Aintree Grand National. Some of the top racehorses in the world come head to head at the Cheltenham Festival, meeting each year since it was first held in 1924. Outsiders very rarely win this race as a result of the high levels of talent and skill from extremely dominant horses, let alone a horse that is only part-time. But this was the case in 1990. A Welsh farmer entered one of his two horses he had in his yard into the Cheltenham Gold Cup, with little expectations as a result of the lack of experience and only part-time training. Defying all odds, Norton’s Coin was able to beat some of the world’s most elite, taking home 1st place in one of the UK’s most prestigious horse races.
Frankie Dettori’s Magnificent 7
It’s unheard of for a jockey to win seven races in one day at a festival competition, but Frankie Dettori became the first ever to do so, adding yet another impressive record to his long list of achievements. The legendary jockey will go down in history for what is now known as the ‘Magnificent Seven’ at Ascot in 1996. Dettori went through the entire race card on the 28th of September, 1996, winning each race and leaving fans around the world speechless. It was a moment that may never be recreated again, cementing the Italian’s name as one of the greatest in the sport’s history.
Rich Strike Kentucky Derby, 2022
One of the more recent unexpected moments in horse racing came in 2022, when an 80/1 late entry was tasked with winning the Kentucky Derby, the biggest horse race in the United States. A withdrawal a day before the race provided a space for Lucky Strike to take part, with expectations being extremely limited, even from the trainer themselves. Beginning the race in last place, there was almost no chance for the horse to finish anywhere near the front of the pack; however, miraculously, Rich Strike found its way to the front and won the 2022 Kentucky Derby, shocking everyone, including the jockey himself.
To Conclude
