It would take an extraordinary effort, like running this race in sub-two minutes, by another runner in this race to even come close of beating Flightline. However, no other runner has ever run this fast over 10F. But this is one of the biggest 10F dirt races on the planet so they’ll all will be going for it all out, and anything can happen…
Gladiateur, for how long have Hills offered these odds? Or are they recent based on the current weather forecast?
At a cursory glance, 6-4 that Flightline wins by over 5 lengths appears good value relative to his current market odds of 3-5 for a straight win even thought he’s won every race by no less than 6 lengths!
One second is equivalent to about five lengths over a standard surface. But some rain and strong winds are forecast. So they could be hoping that the weather becomes the wild card here and alter the conditions to the extent of slowing the speed and becoming the “equalizer”.Nathan, thank you for organizing this comp…

Moira,
this 3-yo, Canadian filly won the Queen’s Plate 10F over synthetics beating the boys. However, last time out in the E.P. Taylor Stakes (G1) she was disqualified and placed last of eight after finishing second. That was her first ever run over turf. I believe she’s good enough to win this…
Historically, North American-based horses have dominated here, winning 12 times in the past 14 years.
– of the 14 winners, 10 have won their final prep race:
– 5 Miss Grillo Stakes (G2);
– 3 Natalma Stakes (G1);
– 2 Jessamine Stakes (G2);
– 1 Fillies Mile (G1);
– 1 Prix Marcel Boussac (G1);
– 1 Alcibiades (G1);
– 1 Selima Stakes (L)This year’s Miss Grillo winner is Pleasant Passage and Natalma Stakes was won by Last Call…
The favorites only have a 21% strike rate, but were placed (1,2, or 3) 42% of the time.
Good Luck, all!
Was really looking forward to seeing Mysterious Night here who won the prep for this last time out at Woodbine in a very impressive fashion. Couldn’t find any news as to why C. Appleby chose to not enter him here?…
The odds here favor the Euros who have won this race 9 times (64%) since its inception in 2008.
– 3 winners have won the Dewhurst (G1) as their final prep;
– 3 Pilgrim Stakes (G2);
– 2 Bourbon (G2);
– 1 Royal Lodge (G2)
– 1 Grand Criterium (G1);
– 1 Prix Morny (G1);
– 1 Somerviolle (G3);
– 1 Star Appeal;
– 1 Summer StakesI’ll go with Andthewinneris, this year’s Bourbon winner.
Good luck, all!
Both Saffron Beach and Bayside Boy have been scratched…
I’m a big fan of Modern Games, however I’m pulling for Kinross here: 3 races, 3 countries, 2 continents, in a span of 6 weeks…maximum respect! Being by Kingman, 8F should be no problem.
Thumbs up to him and his connections for even attempting this arduous feat!The wild card will be ground conditions. Rain is forecast the BC weekend, with temperatures hovering around 14-19*C…
LD,
Well said! A very thoughtful and balanced argument. You gave very good reasons for why you think Frankel is better than Dancing Brave. I totally understand your position.
But whether or not we’re in agreement is not the issue here, understanding is key. If people understand each other and the reasons why they hold their positions then they’re more likely to respect each other more and be more considerate. This may not always be the case, but generally through understanding we’ll get along with each other much better…
It is impossible to reach definitive conclusions on, for instance, the greatest race horse, or athlete, or football team, etc., etc., No methodology has yet been invented to make such determination.
It’s like asking what’s the best ice cream flavor? Some may go for vanilla, some may prefer chocolate, and others may like strawberry, etc…Yet, some people here take things to the extreme and appear to suffer from convulsions because someone has a view that horse “A” is comparable to, or better than, horse “B”.
People should relax, take it easy. The world is not going to end because one fails to persuade someone to their way of thinking. I can assure you, tomorrow the sun will rise and the birds will sing!
Dancing Brave is one of top five horses ever, in my books – better than Frankel.
What happened to him at the Breeders’ Cup can be excused. I feel it was mostly related to travel and the hot weather, but who really knows?
“What’s more in his QA romp Frankel recorded a faster furlong split (10.58s from 3 out to 2 out) than any of the sprinters managed in the Kings Stand run later that day and that was on ground officially called good to soft…”
For comparative purposes a stand-alone figure of 10.58 secs. can be somewhat misleading. What about the other sectionals vs 5F King’s Stand winner that day? Is such data readily available?
But let’s put Frankel’s QA split-times in a proper context:
1st F: 15.11
2nd F: 11.79
3rd F: 11.96
4th F: 12.10
5th F: 11.26
6th F: 10.58
7th F: 11.04
8th F: 14.01One other thing: maybe it’s time for people to stop using Excelebration as some yardstick or “gold standard” by which race horses are compared. After all, he got pissed-on by Wise Dan in the BC Mile Turf, and he didn’t even finish second…
“Glorious Goodwood”… to me, that’s one of the most iconic titles/names associated with a horse racing event on the planet, period!
No need for a prefix!
“…If it was a raging success, I’d grudgingly accept it – however I’m afraid it’s a case of putting up with it…as they’re not going to change.”
Andy,
“They” may indeed “change” but what is needed is addressing the elephant in the room which is QIPCO, the sponsor of the event.
It’s no coincidence that Qatari sponsorship of not only the British Champions Day but also sponsorship of Guineas Festival at Newmarket, Irish Champion Stakes, and Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly in France started in 2011, just months after the country was awarded 2022 FIFA World Cup. So, QIPCO’s sole purpose and objective was to promote the name and image of Qatar. They wanted the name to be widely recognized, and they used sports to accomplish this task.
Around the same time, Qatar signed a very lucrative football shirts deal with Barcelona where the name “Qatar Foundation” would appear on their jersey. A couple of years later it was “Qatar Airways”. For the first time in then Barcelona’s 111-year history that they were paid for advertisements on their jersey.
Moreover, in 2014 QIPCO also signed a “commercial” deal with Royal Ascot which runs until 2024.
My point in all of this is, and I’m speculating, that QIPCO may have had already achieved Qatar’s goals as the World Cup is almost here – no need for any further sponsorship of horse races for the sole purpose of name recognition. In such context, their sponsorship may end in 2023 or 2024, to coincide with Royal Ascot’s terms.
Therefore, to attract new sponsors the powers at be may be “forced” to look at more lucrative and salable
alternatives. They may need to redesign the whole product…Both, Modern Games and credible 3rd. place finisher Jadoomi, are headed next to the Breeders’ Cup..
“He’s run a very creditable race, and he’ll go to the Breeders’ Cup now,” Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby said..”
“I think Keeneland will be the obvious place to go,” Jadoomi’s co-trainer Ed Crisford said. “Coming around a bend might just play to his strengths and be the next step. He wants cut in the ground. That’s the key. He has won two Group 2 races and had to find five or six pounds to be competitive with the top two in the betting, and he has definitely improved again. He’s a lightly raced 4-year-old, and there’s no reason why he shouldn’t improve again.”
I wish the connections would also consider taking Inspiral, she could redeem herself.
Losing a 12F Arc in more testing conditions and having faced a much deeper, quality field would have been more “legitimately excusable” and understandable – perhaps 12F was not to his true ability. But, the owners rolled the dice and lost, pure and simple. There could be infinite number of reasons why he got beat yesterday. So what? He lost!
Seems Adayar could be heading to the Breeders’ Cup next…
“…Obviously we’ll have discussions about where we go next,” Appleby told England-based Racing TV. “We might look at taking him to America for the Breeders’ Cup Turf. He’s getting better with his gate work. He came out well today.
“That would be the only question mark about going there. He’s got no miles on the clock, but he’s had a race today, so I don’t want to fall into the trap today of backing him up quickly like I did last year after a layoff.”
Apparently, Kinross is headed to Keeneland next to contest the Breeders’ Cup Mile…
“…I’ve always had a little bit of a hankering for him to do it at this trip,” Beckett said, “even with a Breeders’ Cup Mile on the horizon. He’ll go there as well, with any luck.”
“Ralph has been training fantastically this year,” Dettori said. “Two Group 1 wins in the space of two weeks for Kinross, and we will take him to America now.”
Hoping for Baaeed to win this, and sail into the sunset undefeated…
