IS,
On this occasion I have to say I totally agree. Smarty Jones would annihilate Doyen at any distance up to 12f. In fact it wouldn’t be a contest as Doyen has been hugely overrated. How can a horse that has never won a Group 1 despite being a 4yo be a short-priced favourite for the King George and Arc and what did he actually beat at Ascot?
The real question we should be asking is who would win the Classic if connections of Bago really do want to take him there?
Over what distance and where?
At Epsom perhaps, where fans of Oath would say that he is the better horse because he finished in front on that particular day.
Your assertions are as babyish as "My dad’s a better driver than Ayrton Senna ever was because he can beat the school bus".
Behrens………..Ecton Park………..Slickly……Almushtarak – I agree, true titans of the turf all.
No-one denies that DM was a good horse, and no-one is actually saying that he might not beat a few of the greats of yesteryear either. However, just to say he would win because "I say so"………….nonsense.
Actually I might join you……………I would like to state that Trigger and Champion The Wonder Horse would get stuffed by Black Beauty and no-one can convince me otherwise. Not official ratings, the form book, those who actually saw these horses run etc etc etc:cool:
Quote: from Irish Stamp on 10:12 pm on July 8, 2004[br] DM is on a different track to those listed and probably quite a bit better than the "old favourites" who nowadays it seems nothing can be better than eg. Brigadier Gerard, Dancing Brave, Mill Reef, Ribot, Sea Bird, Nijinsky.
Yes he definitely was better than Brigadier Gerard who could only manage 17 wins from his 18 races including the 2000 Guineas 1971, King George VI Queen Elizabeth Stakes 1972, Eclipse Stakes 1972, Champion Stakes 1971, Champion Stakes 1972, Sussex Stakes 1971, Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, 1971Queen Elizabeth II Stakes 1972, St. James Palace Stakes1971, Prince of Wales’s Stakes 1972, Lockinge Stakes 1972, Middle Park Stakes 1970.
And I would have to concede that he most surely would have demolished Dancing Brave who only won Group Ones at three different distances, including of course a valueless Arc featuring brimfuls of Derby winners and Group One performers. In fact I think Dancing Brave would have enhanced his reputation no end if he too had dominated smallish fields of questionable class.
I won’t bother listing the others’ achievements. And I think calling Falbrav "average" , Kotkijet, just shows that, like fans of Dancing Brave, Nijinsky et al, those of you worshipping at the Temple of DM, are unwilling to accept that one day your hero will be supplanted by something better/at least as good. I think it is impossible to say if Falbrav is better than DM, but he won more Group Ones in more continents and kept it going from May to December too. In my book that’s pretty clever. I also agree with Aidan that Montjeu was peerless in his classic year and would have brushed DM aside.
I liked DM. He was brave and a beautiful animal and I hope his offspring do him justice; in particular Watchtower. I also hope that they actually achieve more on the track than he did.
