I dont like the Shergar Cup, i would be happy to see the last of it, as with horseracing in general today, its another case of something to try and capture a new audience, with little regard for the established long standing punter. They are trying to make a team sport out of something that cannot be a team sport, i really dont get it!!!
I find it quite upsetting and worrying now that on the big racing Saturdays a lot of the ‘old’ regular genuine racing punters are staying away from the racecourses, and the crowd are now made up of party goers mainly interested in drinking and not interested in racing, and racing is something that is happening in the background, rather than be the main attraction.
EYECATCHER SAKHALIN STAR finished 2nd @ 9/2 in his first 7f Nursery at Catterick, he was finishing strongly when hampered in the final furlong, one to keep an eye on when running in similar company.
EYECATCHER DUTCH COURAGE WON at 6/5 at Newmarket following being flagged up on this site.
EYECATCHER INNOCENTLY WON a Nursery at York yesterday at 3-1
EYECATCHERS noted in the last week are:
BALTIC FIRE a nice looking colt who caught the eye at Catterick, going good to firm, and looked much better in the paddock than his 50-1 price suggested, trained by Mrs K Burke, ridden by Joey Haynes, he was slowly away, but stayed on strongly to finish a close 3rd in the 7f Nursery, this was a good performance considering he was 14lb wrong in the handicap, one to watch out for.
IL PAPARAZZI trained by Daniel Kuber ridden by Luke Morris, caught the eye in the pre parade ring at York on Friday in the 7f Maiden, going good to firm, a really good looking type, he was very coltish and green in the parade ring, which is usually a big negative, yet he won convincingly, tracking the leaders and keeping on strongly and pulled clear to win by 6lengths, one to note in similar company.
HOT STREAK** trained by Kevin Ryan ridden by Phil Makin caught the eye in the parade ring at York yesterday on his maiden debut over 6f, going good to firm, he was a picture in the parade ring, a big strong sprinter type, very powerfully built, but quite laid back and a bit green, he was held up in the rear, shaken up and driven out to win by 2 1/2lengths,
LADY CAPTAIN WON AT 6/4 she caught my eye on her first outing, but then showed herself to be very immature in running, finally came good on Saturday in the selling race at Ripon ridden by Jamie Spencer he managed to get her across from the most disadvantaged draw to win.
EYECATCHERS for the week are:
LEFT DEFENDER trained by Jo Hughes, ridden by Franny Norton was a nice big strong type in the paddock and out ran his price of 33-1 to come 3rd to the two fancied Newmarket horses, challenging the Haggas horse for second place, this was a 6f Novice Stakes on firm ground, he could be interesting in a nursery. The biggest EYECATCHER of the week for me was the Tim Easterby trained, Adam Carter ridden SEE THE SUN who caught my eye in the paddock having a nice coat and athletic looking, he also outran his price of 40-1, looking full of promise but getting blocked in when running on, and finished 5th, a one to note in similar company, the going was good to firm.
And finally another one for our Nursery/Handicap list is BAR SHY trained by Tim Easterby ridden by Adam Carter, caught my eye in the paddock at Redcar and showed mid race speed, this being his third run in a maiden over 7f on good to firm, he may be worth considering when running in a nursery over a shorter distance.
Im going to list some of my 2 year olds from last year that are getting their act together this year as three year olds.
BONDESIRE – trained by David O’Meara has won 2 out of 4 runs this year one to note as he is slightly progressive
TEETOTAL – trained by Nigel Tinkler who disappointed last year, but has got his act together this year winning twice and only out of the frame once in 9 runs this year, had difficult run last time out, is progressive and one to keep an eye on.
HEAVENS GUEST – trained by Richard Fahey he didnt win until October last year, but has won 3 of his last four this year, a progressive sort on to follow.
PASTUREYES – trained by Scott Dixon, a big strong filly that caught my eye first time out at Ripon last year, then didnt run again until March this year on all weather, then ran very promising at Thirsk back 24th June to finish second in a maiden, thats three maiden runs, and maybe worth considering when runs in a handicap
PIPERS NOTE – trained by Richard Whittaker – a horse i loved as a maiden a big strong type, who is showing to be progressive this year winning his last two races at Ripon, one definitely to follow
A couple of horses caught my eye in the 2 year old maiden race at York on Saturday over 6f going good to firm. The main EYECATCHER was the winner THE GREY GATSBY a big strong type trained by K. Ryan ridden by Graham Lee, in rear shaken up, stayed onto lead, although showing some greeness in running, won well. One to follow
I would give THE GREY GATSBY**
In the same race the third home at 20-1 the Richard Fahey VENTURA QUEST, ridden by D. Nolan was a nice looking colt and one to consider in a lesser race than this, the same can be said of ROYAL BANKER who finished fourth, trained by Jedd O’Keefe a nice looking colt who may be worth noting in a lesser race.
EYECATCHERS RUNNING TODAY:
INSTANT ATTRACTION – Hamilton 6.40
Results of the EYECATCHERS that ran yesterday:
BIRKACRE – looked good in the paddock 5TH 10-1

HEAVENS GUEST – won 7-1
BURNING BLAZE – non runner
HESKIN – 4th 3-1 got bumped at the start at Chester no time to recover
Ive noticed some of the horses i really liked physically as 2 year olds are doing well as 3 year olds, one of them being Pipers Note, a horse i flagged up last year who only ran a couple of times in 2012, he is looking like a progressive horse having won his last two races and is looking like a horse to follow.
Ive made a list of the best ones and will be posting that on Sunday however Ive noticed two of them are running today in the same race.
So i will mention them today.BURNING BLAZE – trained by K. Ryan runs at Newmarket at 3.15
HEAVENS GUEST – trained by R. Fahey, runs in the same race.
Four EYECATCHERS running today:
BIRKACRE trained by R. Fahey runs at 1.50 York in a maiden.
BOUNTY GIRL trained by Tim Easterby also runs at 1.50 at York she has finished third each time she has ran, so will have to find improvement to win this maiden.
HESKIN trained by R. Fahey runs in the Nursery at Chester 6.50
INNOCENTLY runs in the Nursery at York 2.55
MAIDENS TO CONSIDER IN HANDICAPS OR NURSERIES

HESKIN trained by R Fahey – consider in 7f nurseries

I observe maidens in the parade ring and comment on those that i think have the physical capability to go on and win races, originally i said i would flag them up on the days they were running with comments of their chances, however realising that some of the performances in subsequent maiden races are poorer than they physically look, has prompted me to highlight some of them as winning prospects when they first run in handicap/nurseries. A prime example was ABSOLUTE DIAMOND, who won her first handicap yesterday at 20-1.
In this post im going to review all of my listed horses with pointers, then i will do a separate post giving an updated list of HANDICAP/NURSERY PROSPECTS.
ABSOLUTE DIAMOND – (WON) – 20-1 one to follow
AETNA – 10th – 11-1 / 8th 25-1 / (WON) – 5-1 / 2ND -6-1

INSTANT ATTRACTION – hasnt run since first listed, one to note
JAMBOREE GIRL – hasnt run since first listed, one to note
JACQUOTTE DELAHAYE – she finished second in her first maiden class 5, then ran promising in a class 2 race at Mussleburgh, last time out played up badly going into stalls and ran disappointing, definitely worth considering again, maybe best in handicaps.
KOPKAP – has run poor in 3 maidens, physically looks good, one to consider when running in nursery
KOMMANDER KIRKUP – hasnt run since first mentioned one to note when next runs
LADY CAPTAIN – 3rd 14-1 / 3rd 5-1 / 2nd 7-1 , a nice strong filly, but has always shown immaturity.
LEXINGTON ROSE – (WON) 6-4 / 2ND 11-8

STREET BOSS – one to consider in 1m nursery
VODKA TIME – (WON) 2-1
YUL FINEGOLD – 6th 28-1/ 5th 20-1/ 2nd 20-1
The first of my EYECATCHERS in the handicap/nursery list won today at 20-1, the J Quinn trained ABSOLUTE DIAMOND ridden by Raul Da Silva, is a filly that i really liked physically from day one, she is a nice big strong type who hadnt ran as good as she looked in her three maidens, today in her first handicap she kept on strongly and won gamely by 2 lengths, she is a one to keep an eye on.
Another one of my previously mentioned EYECATCHERS PORSH HERRICK was second at Catterick today at 22-1 beaten by the Newmarket trained hot favourite Money Team.
Tomorrow the first of my **EYECATCHERS runs in the 2.10 at Newmarket, the Group 2 Portland Place Stakes race, ASTAIRE a really good looking type i liked at York is trained by Kevin Ryan and ridden by Neil Callan.
On Thursday this week i plan to go through all my eyecatchers to list the maidens that have had their 3 runs to qualify for their handicap marks, so you know to look out for them when they run in their first handicap/nursery.
The first maiden EYECATCHER to run in a handicap runs tomorrow at Catterick at 3.20 over 7f ABSOLUTE DIAMOND, trained by J. Quinn, ridden by Raul Da Silva maybe worth considering if the market speaks in his favour. She is a really nice strong looking filly and has had her 3 maiden runs, and looks physically better than she has shown on the racecourse so far. She is currently 8-1.
The EYECATCHERS of the week were at Catterick on Wednesday.
In the 5f Fillies Maiden JAMBOREE GIRL trained by Tim Easterby ridden by Duran Fentiman, caught the eye in the paddock and finished strongly to be a close second, definitley one to note when next running in similar company. In the same race BIRKACRE trained by Richard Fahey ridden by Tony Hamilton, was slowly away, then bumped in running and she was just a head behind the second, so another one to consider when running in similar company.
In the next Maiden race of the day over 5f the 4/5 favourite had ran in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot and i presume that was why his price was so short, he was not an eyecatcher in the paddock, but the winner REGIMENT trained by Richard Fahey ridden by Tony Hamilton, was a definite EYECATCHER physically, a lovely strong looking type which a nice nature, he made all and stayed on strongly to beat the favourite and defitely one to note when running in similar company.
In the same race the third home STREET BOSS trained by Tim Easterby ridden by Duran Fentiman was a paddock EYECATCHER a nice strong grey, who is improving with every run and may be worth considering when running over further in similar company.
At the end of my report im going to highlight and list horses that ive seen that are worth considering when appearing in their first handicap/nursery races. Horses that look the part but havent performed as well as they have looked physically, but horses that could step up once they have their handicap mark.
First of all the EYECATCHERS of the last week are:
KOPKAP a strong looking colt i saw at Carlisle on Wednesday,5f going good, trained by Ed McMahon ridden by Graham Gibbons having his third run he didnt run as well as he physically looked, will be in the Nursery list at the end of this report. At Newcastle on Thursday FOXY CLARETS caught the eye as the pick of the paddock, a nice strong colt trained by Richard Fahey ridden by Tony Hamilton, drawn on the outside, what looked the disadvantaged side, he dwelt at the start chased the group then ran full of promise staying on at the end, one to note next time out or when running at a similar level.
At Newcastle on Saturday there were 3 EYECATCHERS in the same race, the 5f maiden, going good to soft, the race was won by the hot favourite Fast Track, but the three i liked physically were the two Kevin Ryan trained, INSTANT ATTRACTION a nice looking colt ridden by Phil Makin, tried to make all but was overtaken by the favourite, and finished second, i think INSTANT ATTRACTION is one to note when running in similar company.
The other Ryan runner was a filly called PLEASE LET ME GO, ridden by claimer Kevin Stott, she is a nice big strong type, a little green in the preliminaries this was her third run and she kept on well to finish fourth, this being her third maiden run, one to consider when running in a nursery.
The third EYECATCHER was ANOTHER ROYAL, a nice good looking filly trained by Tim Easterby ridden by Robert Winston she ran much better than her previous run at Redcar, and was held up, but then chased leaders to finish third. She is one to note in similar company or when running in her nursery.
EYECATCHER NURSERY/HANDICAP DEBUT LIST SO FAR:
ABSOLUTE DIAMOND – J. QUINN
SAKHALIN STAR – J. QUINN
PLEASE LET ME GO – K. RYAN
KOPKAP – E. MCMAHONThe standard of maidens in the last week in the north has been quite low, and the eyecatchers have been few, i feel the maidens in general in the north are quite behind this year because of such a poor spring, i did notice at Pontefract on Sunday for the first time this year that most of the horses were blooming and looking really well in their coats, thanks to a bit of recent sunshine.
At Ripon on Thursday 20th June the maiden EYECATCHER in the parade ring was the John Quinn trained, ridden by M O’Connell, SAKHALIN STAR a really good looking colt, looking well muscled, fit and great in his coat, was not fancied in the betting, finished 4th on his second run, i think he is one to note when he runs in his nursery.
At Pontefract on SUNDAY the EYECATCHER was the Richard Fahey winner DUTCH COURAGE a nice filly who tracked the leaders and stayed on well, i think she is one to note in similar company.
At Thirsk on Monday i had the gift of a 33-1 winner – 56-1 on Betfair, the EYECATCHER in the parade ring ANNOUNCEMENT definitely did not look like a 33-1 shot, she is a nice strong filly who looked very fit and well in her coat, she did go to the post acting a bit green, but chased the leaders and stayed on well to win, she is trained by Karen Tutty and ridden by Barry McHugh.
Another EYECATCHER in the paddock was the David Barron trained FIRECRUISE ridden by Phil Maken, a nice strong looking colt he looked like he could do with a run, and dwelt at the start and never got into the race, but he may be one to note in similar company.
Three EYECATCHERS running today:
JACQUOTTE DELAHAYE – i flagged this nice strong filly up when i saw her run at Beverley first time out, when she chased home the subsequent Windsor Castle second, she is one to note today running at AYR at 4.50.
ADIATOR a really good looking big strong filly who finished 2nd at Redcar first time out, didnt run so well at Beverley, but that track doesnt suit all, so may be worth considering today running again at REDCAR at 5.05.
AETNA another one of the good looking ones ive flagged up another big strong filly i really like, she is up in class today, but may e worth considering if the market is in her favour, being trained by Mick Easterby. she runs at NEWMARKET 4.05.
