Its still early days for the jumps, but a couple of pointers for Market Rasen today, front runners do well here and at this track i like Peter Bowen, Philip Hobbs, Nicky Henderson and Malcolm Jefferson and I always like Twiston Davis at this time of year. One horse to consider each way current price 7-1 is O’CROITAGH a course specialist.

The flat season is winding down now and finding them in the parade ring isnt as easy at this stage of the season. So i will report anything special that i see between now and the end of the season on the flat, but from Tuesday i will be giving more attention to the jumps, visiting two jumps tracks next week.
Today i have 2 EYECATCHERS to mention from the last week and because the flat season for me is winding down im going to do a summary of my selections in my next post.
At Pontefract yesterday, going good, the maiden SOVIET COURAGE, trained by W. Haggas ridden by G. Gibbons, this was a strong looking colt who got hampered at the start, ran green but then ran on in the final furlong, one to consider in similar conditions.
Also at Pontefract a 4 year old caught my eye EVANESCENT trained by J. Quinn, ridden by Robert Winston, this nice looking gelding won impressively as he had done a few days earlier at Ayr, obviously progressive, one to keep on right side of.
One EYECATCHER for the last week would be the good looking MAJOR CRISPIES trained by J Eustace and ridden by P Hannagan, he was well backed for the class 4 Nursery at York on Sunday 7f going good, badly drawn on the outside he kept on well in the final furlong and was just beaten by 2 lengths, one to consider in similar company.
One other horse to mention at York is the Kevin Ryan GALVANISE, a real EYECATCHER in the paddock, this 2 year old was very unruly in the stalls, so much so i really thought he should have been withdrawn particularly as he was well backed leading up to the off, he ran behind the field and never got into the race, his race was definitely lost in the stalls.
EYECATCHER NOBLE ASSET runs today at Newcastle 2.40 this race is 1f further than his race at Catterick last time out, and he did look like he could be better over slightly further, so one to consider today.
Only one EYECATCHER to mention from the last week of racing and that is NOBLE ASSET trained by J Quinn ridden by M O’Connell was the pick of the paddock at Catterick on 28th August, he was running in the 5f Maiden going Good, he took a keen hold, switched right one furlong out, kept on and was just beaten a short head. One to consider in similar company.
EYECATCHER running Friday 30th August:
FOXY CLARETS – Sandown 2.20
EYECATCHERS running today are:
INNOCENTLY 3.40 Ripon
STREET BOSS 3.05 Ripon
My EYECATCHER of the week ran at Ripon today in the 3-4year old maiden race, 1m going good. The Gerard Butler trained ZAIN EAGLE, looked a picture in the parade ring, a big strong colt looking well in his coat, made all, clear 1 furlong out, unchallenged kept on strongly to win by an impressive 9 lengths, although not a strong maiden, i suspect this colt will go on to do better things.
On the theme of big strong horses being less affected by increases of weight, another one to note is DUTCH ROSE, a huge well built filly who won at York during the week.
Later in the week i will be posting an upto date list of results and comments on horses previously listed, and those yet to run.
RESULTS OF MY EYECATCHERS IN THE LAST WEEK:
JAMBOREE GIRL – WON AT 3-1 Mussleburgh Tues 20th
THE GREY GATSBY** 2nd at 5/4 York ACOMB STAKES, just outpaced by a more experienced runner, ran a little green, wouldnt give up on him yet!
SLEEPER KING** 4th at 8-1 York DBS Premier sales race, on Thursday 22nd, said not to like the ground which was good to firm
ASTAIRE** WON at 5-1 THE GIMCRACK at York Saturday
HOT STREAK** WON at 3-1 Listed Race at York Saturday
RIGHT TOUCH won at 10-1 Newcastle today.
I will be flagging up my EYECATCHER of the last week in my following post.
Two of the **EYECATCHERS WON yesterday at York ASTAIRE WON the Gimcrack at 5-1 and HOT STREAK WON Julia Graves Listed Race at 3-1.
This week’s report will be posted later today
EYECATCHERS OF THE WEEK:
At Pontefract on Sunday going good to firm, in the 1m 3yo Maiden Race, the Mark Johnson trained MAHICAN caught the eye in the parade ring, a nice type physically, ridden by Joe Fanning he ran up with the pace, and fought back well when headed by the Fanshawe favourite, and was only beaten a neck. One to note when running in similar company.
At Thirsk yesterday going good, in the 6f Maiden race, in the paddock two horses caught the eye the Tim Easterby trained THE HOODED CLAW is a really big strong colt, ridden by David Allen he outran his price of 50-1 he led and was headed 1f out beaten 2l by the Given trained favourite, one to note in similar company or nursery races when there is give in the ground. The other horse to catch my eye was the Mrs K Burke trained PURE IMPRESSIONS, ridden by M O’Connell he was green at the start, dwelt, slowly away but kept on strongly in the final furlong, one to consider in similar company.
Another observation i made yesterday was how big and strong the 4 year old BONDI BEACH BOY is, and it made me think that when a horse is in his kind of form, and has such size and strength, the extra weight the handicapper gives them, isnt going to stop them winning, so being aware of the physical size of a horse may be an important factor when it goes up in weight. I will flag up on this site any other particularly strong progressive horses that i come across.
Another horse ive seen recently that i think will be winning again is the 4 year old, David O’Meara trained MORROCO.
I will be flagging up my EYECATCHERS for the last week in my next report on Tuesday.
Just one to keep an eye on in this coming week, THE GREY GATSBY, trained by Kevin Ryan, i was so impressed with this horse at York it is entered in the Acomb Stakes on Wednesday, and The Gimcrack on Saturday.
WINNERS IN THE LAST WEEK
LADY CAPTAIN – WON at 6/4 Redcar last Saturday
BALTIC FIRE – 3rd at 14-1 Beverley last Thursday in a nursery
SEE THE SUN – WON at 8-1 in the Maiden at Pontefract today
HESKIN – finished 3rd at 16-1 in a Newmarket nursery on Saturday
TODAYS EYECATCHER RUNNERS:
BROUGHTON :Keltbray Shergar Cup Classic Handicap
Has won 3 events at around 1¼m since June, putting up a career-best to land a 13-runner Goodwood handicap last time, though he hasn’t fully convinced with his stamina in 2 tries at this tripINNOCENTLY:
Betfred ‘Double Delight’ Nursery
Made winning debut at Redcar in May and back in the groove when landing Carlisle nursery last month. Improved when taking similar event at York last time, and a possible with a 3lb riseLADY CAPTAIN;
Racing Uk Icard For Today’s Racecards Selling Stakes
More of an impact hooded dropped to selling/claiming company in recent weeks, opening account at Ripon over this trip last month. Ran poorly at Thirsk last week, now fitted with cheekpieces for the first time.ARR KID
Unison’s Ayrshire & Arran Health Branch Handicap
Made a promising start to career when 2¾ lengths second of 7 to Hasheem on debut at Newcastle (1¼m) and unsuited by drop in trip next time. Stiffish task at Pontefract since, his first and best performance was with give in the ground, he then ran on good to firm poorly, today the going is good at Ayr, this is his handicap debut and he is blinkered for the first time.EYECATCHERS of the week:
At Redcar 31st July going good to firm, DUTCH BREEZE who ran in the 6f Maiden caught my eye in the paddock, a nice strong type trained by Tim Easterby ridden by David Allan, the 2 year old colt ran prominently led to final furlong edged right and was beaten just 1/2 length by a Newmarket trained horse. One to consider in similar company.
At Ripon, 6th August, going good, 2yo Maiden over 6f, KENNY THE CAPTAIN caught my eye in the paddock, a nice looking colt looking really good in his coat, but proving to be a little immature in the parade ring, he ran well chasing Ventura Quest home, he is one to consider in nurseries, he is trained by Tim Easterby and was ridden by Duran Fentiman.
Also at Ripon 6th August, going good, in the 1m 2f Maiden a 3 year old colt caught my eye in the parade ring SPIRIT OF RIO, trained by D Barron ridden by G. Gibbons, a lovely looking colt who went on to win by 3 lengths, one to keep an eye on in similar company.

BONDESIRE – WON 3-1 – Ripon 5th August
VENTURA QUEST – WON – 2/5f Ripon 6th August
