Simple..the BBC have given up on all racing…the equine variety…they are happy to spend licence payers money on the motor version…for at least three years. They even failed to show the Arc last year although they hadn’t thrown the towel in at that point. Their attitude to the sport, certainly in the approach they took to the National, suggests a negative approach is the norm, now.
I think there’s a danger of being too po-faced about all this. A touch of humour, the puns that make you groan, can add to the atmosphere when you’re on course watching a race. After all, horse racing is part of the entertainment business. That said, agree that for a commentator to do it in every race would be wrong. But there needs to be some enthusiasm in a commentary and the puns can be part of that.
Great race. Anyone know anybody who actually backed the winner though? Still good for Aintree. Not that critics won’t complain, even saying how bad it was that some horses hadn’t completed the course. There’s no harm to man or beast in "pullingup"
No doubt Simon Holt best race commentator around. Compare past years and Aussie Jim. Yes more paddock coverage focusing on individual horses would help. More humour too. Where’s Tommo when you need him. Overall a great improvement on Beeb.
